"What happened next?" Lingfeng eagerly asked.
The man hesitated for a moment and then said, "Later, that woman indeed left, but unexpectedly, strange things began to happen in the village after that."
"Strange things? What kind of strange things?"
The man did not directly answer Lingfeng's question. He looked up and saw the sun setting; it was getting late. He hurriedly said, "We can't talk much here. Come with me, and we'll discuss it as we walk!"
Lingfeng nodded.
On the way, the man continued, "The so-called strange things are actually hauntings!"
"Hauntings?" Lingfeng raised his eyebrows, intrigued. Since arriving in the Cultivation Realm, he had encountered many supernatural phenomena but had never seen a ghost. He asked, "What kind of ghosts?"
The man shook his head and sighed, "No one knows what kind of ghosts they are. It's just that every night, some black shadows appear in the village. According to the elders, our village has now become a Ghost Gate."
Hearing this, Lingfeng laughed and asked in confusion, "The Ghost Gate is usually closed. Even if your place has become a Ghost Gate, those ghosts would be guarded by Ox-Head and Horse-Face. How could you say they are ghosts?"
"We are also very puzzled. We burn paper offerings every night, but those ghosts not only do not disappear; instead, they enter our rooms every night to scare people, making it impossible for us to live in peace. Out of desperation, we moved to the mountains!"
Lingfeng fell silent, thinking that these ghosts were likely illusions created by that woman’s formation. However, he did not understand why she would scare these common folk.
Later, Lingfeng learned that the man's surname was Liu, so he referred to him as Uncle Liu.
Lingfeng followed Uncle Liu to the mountains and entered a hollow where he discovered some makeshift straw houses built there, along with some in the trees.
Uncle Liu led Lingfeng into the hollow. When some people saw Lingfeng, they looked terrified and kept their distance.
Uncle Liu stood in the middle of the hollow and called out, "Everyone don't be afraid; he is just a traveler passing by."
Lingfeng smiled and nodded to everyone, indicating his friendliness.
However, the smile only fueled their anger. They pointed at Uncle Liu and questioned, "How can you be so bold? What if he brings another crazy person like before?"
It seemed these people were not very friendly, but Lingfeng understood them well. As the saying goes, once bitten by a snake, one is afraid of a rope for ten years; they were likely just scared.
Therefore, Lingfeng did not mind their actions. He looked at everyone kindly and listened to their complaints before slowly saying, "Fellow villagers, there is no need to worry. I am a disciple of the Demon Suppression Sect, skilled in the Five Elements Demon-Slaying Technique. I believe I can help you resolve these supernatural incidents!"
"You can solve it?" The people showed exaggerated expressions and scoffed, "Since these incidents started, eight Taoists have come, seven of whom were from your Demon Suppression Sect, and they all messed things up without any results."
The Demon Suppression Sect is a large sect with significant achievements in demon-slaying. Therefore, some Wandering Sorcerers impersonated disciples of the Demon Suppression Sect to commit fraud and gain ill-gotten wealth.
Lingfeng was already accustomed to such situations. Even before entering the Cultivation Realm, some fraudsters attracted attention by inflating their status.
After thinking for a moment, Lingfeng softly chanted a few lines. A beam of white light fell into his hand and transformed into a wooden token.
The crowd exchanged glances, expressing their surprise and awe.
"This is the pass token of the Demon Suppression Sect. With this token, one can freely enter and exit the Demon Suppression Sect!" When Lingfeng left initially, the sect leader had given him this token.
The crowd fell silent but dared not look directly at Lingfeng. He smiled again and chanted softly once more. Another beam of white light fell into his hand, revealing the token of Water Peak.
"This is the entry token for Demon Suppression Sect Water Peak!” Lingfeng showed the token to everyone. It had a carved droplet on it that looked so realistic it seemed about to fall.
The crowd gasped in amazement again.
"Are you really a disciple of the Demon Suppression Sect?" Although Uncle Liu had brought Lingfeng here, he did not know his true identity.
"Yes, I am here on a mission! Once I help you eliminate the ghost, I will continue on my journey!" Lingfeng replied with a smile.
Uncle Liu revealed a rare smile on his face and hurriedly called out to a woman beside him, "Wife, go cook!"
The woman happily responded and turned to prepare the meal.
"Wait, wait, wait..." Everyone rushed forward, urging Lingfeng to come eat at their homes. One family offered chicken, another offered duck, and a young man with bare arms shouted, "I'll go hunt wild boar!"
The young man's shout drowned out the chatter of the crowd, echoing through the forest. Everyone immediately stopped talking and turned to look at him.
Lingfeng was also somewhat surprised. Hearing the man's deep and powerful voice, which was unlike that of an ordinary person, he stepped forward and smiled as he asked, "May I ask if Brother Zhi has studied martial arts?"
Lingfeng was already regarded as a distinguished guest here, but his question left the man momentarily stunned.
"Haha, Brother Zhi?" Seeing the man in a daze, Lingfeng patiently called out again.
"Oh..." The man finally came back to his senses, scratching his head awkwardly and smiling honestly. "Just call me Gangzi; that's what everyone in the village calls me."
Lingfeng had never been called Daoist and didn't like such an old-fashioned title. He preferred being called Hero or simply by his name. He clasped his hands and said, "Brother Zhi can just call me Lingfeng. By the way, from your shout, it seems you have deep internal strength. May I ask what martial arts you have learned?"
"Oh, three years ago a Daoist came here. He saw that I had good potential, so he taught me a set of techniques."
"Oh? What techniques?" It should be noted that ordinary martial arts techniques typically require five or six years of practice to cultivate upper-level internal strength.
"It's called Shattering Stone Fist; it's meant for strengthening the body." Gangzi didn't hide it and answered honestly.
Lingfeng was taken aback. Shattering Stone Fist was a technique from the Demon Suppression Sect. Could it be that Gangzi was taught martial arts by someone from the Demon Suppression Sect? As far as Lingfeng knew, currently only Lame Li and Azure Vine were outside from the Demon Suppression Sect.
The more Lingfeng thought about it, the more excited he became. Whichever of the two it was would be of great help to him.
If it were Lame Li, then Lingfeng could ask him about the cultivation methods for Falling Leaf Technique, thus saving a lot of training time.
If it were Azure Vine, then Lingfeng would be even happier. After being apart from Azure Vine for such a long time, Lingfeng had already missed him dearly.
"Does he know where he came from? What are his physical characteristics?" Lingfeng hurriedly asked.
Gangzi shook his head and said, "He doesn't know that, and after he entrusted me with this set of techniques, he left without a word. Moreover..." Gangzi glanced at Lingfeng but did not continue.
"And what about that...?" Lingfeng pressed on.
"Also, that person is quite messy and doesn't pay attention to hygiene. However, his medical skills are superb; he has cured many people's stubborn ailments," Uncle Liu's wife came out of the straw house and took over Gangzi's words.
Gangzi chuckled.
Lingfeng felt a surge of joy and pondered, "It seems he really is Brother; I just wonder where he is now after these three years."
"Hey, the food is ready; let's eat!" Aunt called out.
Lingfeng responded and followed Aunt to a wooden stump, sitting down on the ground next to Uncle Liu.
The local customs here seemed quite simple. Although everyone cooked their own meals, they gathered together to eat.
During the meal, no one spoke or ate but instead stared at Lingfeng.
Although Lingfeng was used to being carefree around familiar faces, having everyone gaze at him made him feel a bit shy about eating.
"Everyone, don't just stare; why aren't you eating?" Uncle Liu said wisely, laughing first. He then picked up a piece of wild chicken and placed it in Lingfeng's bowl, saying, "In this mountain village, there isn't much decent food. Ever since the haunting incident occurred, only one person is sent to keep watch in the village. Today happened to be my turn on duty, and I didn't expect to encounter you, a disciple of the Demon Suppression Sect!"
Lingfeng smiled awkwardly, looked at everyone, and symbolically took a bite of the wild chicken.
Uncle Liu continued, "The haunting incident in the village was too sudden. The villagers rushed up the mountain and only took what they could carry; the remaining grains and vegetables were left at home. Thus, the person on duty can only observe the village's movements from a hidden place but dare not enter the houses. So..." Uncle Liu sighed.
Lingfeng looked at the bowl, which contained only some thin porridge with hardly any rice grains.
"Uncle Liu, there's no need to worry. Let's first understand the situation, and then we can make plans!" Lingfeng put down his bowl and chopsticks, suppressing his hunger.
Uncle Liu nodded and said, "Those ghosts never appear during the day because the guards in the village have never seen those shadows in daylight. But once night falls, those shadows come out in droves, like smoke, emerging from the ground. Although they are silent, their presence brings a chilling feeling to the entire village." As Uncle Liu spoke, his eyes gradually narrowed.
Just hearing Uncle Liu's words did not frighten Lingfeng. However, it was strange why those spirits did not harm people but instead made them flee.
"When they first appeared, I once used a Sickle to strike one, but it seemed like those ghosts were made of smoke; when severed, they could rejoin and disperse on their own." Gangzi continued.
Lingfeng nodded and said, "Ghosts are ethereal beings without a physical body, so a Common Item like a Sickle naturally cannot harm them!"
Everyone suddenly understood and nodded in agreement.
"But Lingfeng, since our weapons can't harm them, how are we supposed to drive these spirits away?" Gangzi asked in confusion.
The others looked at Gangzi and felt that his words made sense, revealing expressions of fear.
