Lingfeng had just finished breakfast when he heard the second clerk call out, "Sir, the horses are ready!" Lingfeng felt delighted, thinking that indeed money could make things happen quickly. He opened the door to let the second clerk in, then closed it and quietly asked, "Have the State Government's forces set out to eliminate the bandits?"
The Second Clerk, although unsure why Lingfeng was asking this, answered honestly, "Not yet. I just went to prepare the horses and saw some White Phoenix Messengers flying above the White Jade Escort Agency. They should be leaving soon!"
Lingfeng nodded, thinking he needed to follow those people to Wisteria Mountain; otherwise, he wouldn't be able to help Bear Brute and the others. He took out a piece of silver and was about to give it to the Second Clerk, but the Second Clerk hurriedly said, "Hero, if you have any orders, please let me know. Just these few rewards you've given me are already equivalent to two or three months' wages for me. How could I dare accept more!"
Hearing himself called "Hero" made Lingfeng happy. He knew the Second Clerk was an honest man, so he said softly, "Brother, please keep an eye out for me. If those people leave, come tell me!"
The Second Clerk hesitated a bit. After all, the State Government's people were not to be trifled with, and he thought Lingfeng might have some grudge against them.
"Brother, you can rest assured. I'm only keeping an eye on them so I can follow behind. I wouldn't normally ride a horse, but things are a bit urgent now. If I leave first and their big bird startles the horses, I might fall off and get hurt—it's embarrassing!" Seeing the Second Clerk still doubtful, Lingfeng spun a little lie.
The Second Clerk, understanding the situation, smiled and nodded repeatedly. "Alright then, Hero! You just wait here; I'll go keep watch for you!" With that, he dashed down the stairs.
Lingfeng smiled with satisfaction and checked his gear. This was his first time preparing for battle, so he naturally felt a bit nervous. He looked at his Xuanji in hand and thought that if anything unexpected happened today, he would have to rely on it to save his life!
Just as he was lost in thought, he heard the Second Clerk quietly at the door say, "Hero, they have left!"
Lingfeng quickly opened the door and slipped a piece of silver into the Second Clerk's hand. He patted the Second Clerk on the shoulder and hurried downstairs.
As he stepped outside, he saw a tall white horse standing at the entrance. The horse was muscular and strong, its front hooves anxiously pawing at the ground as if it couldn't wait for this battle.
Lingfeng smiled with satisfaction and patted the horse's back. "Brother, help me out today; I'll repay you in the future!" With that, he jumped onto the horse's back, raised his whip, and shouted, "Go!" The strong Horse kicked off into a gallop, kicking up a cloud of dust behind.
Though fast, the spirit beasts were even faster. Lingfeng followed closely behind those White Phoenix Messengers and within moments lost sight of them.
However, this Horse was indeed powerful; its hooves sounded like a drumbeat on the ground—"thud thud thud thud..."
Lingfeng chuckled and patted the horse's back while calling out loudly, "Horse, don't rush! They still need some time to find their way!"
How could the horse understand? It only thought its master was urging it to go faster, and indeed, it pushed harder with its legs. However, this made it difficult for Lingfeng, who had never ridden a horse before and was barely managing to keep his balance with his own skills. The horse paid no attention to the road and charged forward as if something awaited it ahead. Lingfeng was screaming on its back, feeling a mix of soreness and pain in his rear.
"Whoa!" Lingfeng quickly pulled on the reins, crying out in distress. He rubbed his sore backside, unsure whether he was praising the horse or complaining about it, and said with a whimper, "Brother Horse, I just told you to slow down; why are you acting like you're about to be reborn?"
The horse shook its mane, snorted a few times, and raised its neck as if it wanted to continue running.
Having suffered enough, Lingfeng wanted to take a break, so he pulled the reins hard and dared not make another sound.
The horse ran nearly forty miles in one go, and at this point, they were only twenty miles away from Wisteria Mountain. Lingfeng's purpose was merely to assess the situation; if the Bear Brute side was losing in battle, he would step in to help. If they had the upper hand, he would refrain from intervening.
After resting for a while and feeling some relief from the pain in his rear, he gently patted the horse's back. The horse responded with an energetic neigh and started running again.
This time, Lingfeng had learned from experience; he tightly secured his feet in the stirrups while lifting his rear off the saddle.
Before long, both man and horse arrived at Wisteria Mountain. They saw a group of White Phoenix Messengers circling above but noticed that there were no people left up there; they must have gone to search the mountain.
Lingfeng stopped the horse and placed the reins on its back, saying, "Brother Horse, wait here for me; I will need you again soon!"
The horse trotted a few steps away to graze not far off. Lingfeng adjusted his clothing and began to ascend the mountain. However, to avoid detection by those from the State Government, he chose not to walk along the path but instead jumped between trees. This way, he could see others first and hide in time.
But after walking for a short while, Lingfeng heard several horse neighs.
Following the sound, he discovered that those people were actually from the White Jade Escort Agency.
"These people are not much of a threat, and since their captain forbids them from using any soldiers or weapons, they must not have brought any Hundred Venom Bees with them. Let me go tease them a bit!" With this thought in mind, Lingfeng perched high on a branch, using the dense foliage to conceal himself.
As those people approached Wisteria Mountain and were about to dismount their horses, Lingfeng began reciting the Incantation of Wood Control.
The horses had not yet steadied themselves when they suddenly looked around with some wariness, their ears twitching uneasily.
Suddenly, a tree not far away began to move. The tree was about thirty meters tall, clearly a colossal figure. The horses had never seen such a sight and were so frightened that they turned and ran, stumbling and causing many riders to fall off.
White Phoenix Mountain frowned but did not dare to be careless. Gripping the reins tightly, he shouted angrily, and the horses stood quietly in place.
Behind White Phoenix Mountain was Bai Lian, but his horse was clearly no better. Seeing the other horses scrambling to escape, it became anxious as well, jumping slightly and nearly throwing Bai Lian to the ground. Fortunately, Bai Lian was skilled in martial arts; he pushed off the stirrups with force, leaping high into the air and landing safely on the ground.
Lingfeng hid in the book, watching the scene with a hand over his mouth, giggling.
In an instant, chaos ensued as people were thrown from their horses, creating a scene of utter disarray. Those lying on the ground cried out for their parents, having fallen hard.
Bai Lian landed on the ground, feeling panicked. Just a few moments ago, he had been scared off by such a scene. Trembling, he approached White Phoenix Mountain and said, "Father, this is the work of a monster here! Previously I fought with Bear Brute and nearly got killed by him; it was this monster that saved me!"
Upon hearing Bai Lian's words, White Phoenix Mountain's expression changed slightly. He then raised his whip and struck Bai Lian on the back. Bai Lian cried out in pain as a red mark appeared on his back.
"You ungrateful wretch! Someone saved you, and instead of thanking them, you call them a monster? Has your conscience been eaten by dogs?" After saying this, he quickly dismounted and made Bai Lian kneel down. He bowed deeply at ninety degrees and sincerely said, "On behalf of Bai Family Town and White Jade Escort Agency, I express our gratitude for saving my son Bai Lian! Please accept my son's bow!"
Bai Lian was quite clever and understood White Phoenix Mountain's intention; he hurriedly bowed his head towards the large tree.
Lingfeng secretly found it amusing and mysteriously changed his tone to a more serious one as he sternly admonished, "White Phoenix Mountain, why are you not kneeling? Why are your servants not kneeling? Since you call me an immortal, you should treat me as one!"
White Phoenix Mountain glanced at the servants around him, seemingly feeling somewhat embarrassed. Although hesitant, he still commanded, "You all kneel quickly!"
The servants fell to their knees like dogs called by their master, repeatedly bowing their heads while shouting "immortal!"
After hesitating for a moment, White Phoenix Mountain slowly knelt down as well, muttering, "I am ignorant; please forgive me, immortal!"
Lingfeng sat far away in the tree, already feeling a tremor of joy in his heart. He then said, "Since that is the case, let me ask you, why are you disturbing my sleep?"
White Phoenix Mountain, despite having seen countless things, felt nervous in the face of today's events and replied calmly, "It is just that the bandits living on this mountain stole the Phoenix Pearl from me, and I have come to capture them!"
"Yes, yes, yes! Last time it was you who saved me, you know!" Bai Lian, having personally experienced this matter, eagerly responded.
"Oh~~~," Lingfeng pretended to ponder deeply for a moment before turning his gaze and saying, "You should know that matters in the world of Daoist have their own destiny; why must you go against it?"
White Phoenix Mountain and Bai Lian exchanged glances but found themselves at a loss for words.
Just as they were silent, everyone suddenly heard the sound of a Horn blowing. Lingfeng couldn't help but look up and saw the Crane Beast Ling Kong rising, with a young boy seated atop it.
The Crane Beast soared above the blue sky, weaving among the White Phoenix Messenger. Although those White Phoenix Messenger were agile and skilled at flying, they stood frozen in shock at the sudden appearance of the Crane Beast.
Lingfeng wanted to shout out in excitement but held back due to his current identity.
The Crane Beast Ling Kong flashed and took advantage of the fact that the White Phoenix Messenger had not yet reacted, letting out a roar as it split into six Crane Beasts.
Those Crane Beasts were fierce in posture, their wings like blades and eyes like Thunder Strike, charging towards the White Phoenix Messenger.
