Lingfeng stood in the courtyard, using all his skills, yet he still couldn't harm a single fallen leaf. Frustrated, he drew the Ivory Bone Knife given to him by the sect leader and began to slash wildly at the leaves, but still saw no damaged foliage.
"Fine, fine! If I can't pierce you, then I'll crush you!" With that, he jumped and began to stomp on the ground covered with leaves.
After a while, the place was in disarray. Feeling a bit tired from all the stomping, he sat down under a tree to rest.
As he sat there for a moment, he suddenly remembered that he hadn't visited the Celestial Fruit Orchard in a long time and wondered if that mysterious figure was still there. He got up and headed towards the Celestial Fruit Orchard.
At this time, the sect leader had sent people to search for Monkey Head and didn't have anyone to guard the Celestial Fruit Orchard. It had become quite quiet here; aside from some birds perched on branches and Spirit Mice burrowing in the ground, there were no signs of people.
Lingfeng looked around and casually picked a bright red fruit, took a bite, and called out, "Is anyone here?"
His voice echoed throughout the Celestial Fruit Orchard, gradually fading away. After a moment of silence, he heard no response.
"Strange, have they all left?" Lingfeng felt a bit dejected and jumped onto a tree branch to survey the area.
Just as he was feeling bored, Lingfeng suddenly felt something hit him from behind and then heard something fall to the ground.
Looking down, he saw a stone.
"Who is it? Why are you sneaking up on me?" Although such an attack wouldn't harm Lingfeng, it still left him feeling somewhat annoyed.
However, after thinking about it, at this hour, those disciples guarding the orchard should be resting. How could there be anyone else here? Could it be that mysterious figure?
He quickly jumped down and exclaimed joyfully, "Senior! Is that you?"
Suddenly, a burst of laughter rang out, more spirited than before, with childlike voices still echoing.
Lingfeng quickly clasped his fists in greeting and exclaimed, "Senior, you are indeed still here." He then picked two Immortal Peaches and tossed them in the distance, saying, "Senior, please have some."
However, the person did not take the Immortal Peaches and replied, "I cannot dare to eat those."
Lingfeng was puzzled and softly asked, "What do you mean by that?"
"Last time I had you pick Dragon Fruits for me, I taught you a set of Earth Escape Technique, which cost me three portions of vitality. Moreover, I used a lot; I had to consume over a hundred ginsengs to recover. If I were to eat your Immortal Peaches now, I would probably have to teach you another Spell," the person said in an amusingly strange tone, quite endearing.
Lingfeng frowned and quickly asked with concern, "Senior, you only taught me one Spell. How could it harm your vitality?"
The person fell silent for a moment but did not reveal the truth. Instead, he said, "This Spell came to me spontaneously; it is not something I cultivated myself. Therefore, when I pass on a Spell to someone else, my own spiritual essence naturally diminishes."
Lingfeng nodded skeptically, wondering if this senior was not human but some kind of spirit. How could one be born with such a Spell? Could it be that a mouse had transformed into a spirit? He suddenly felt a spark of realization and thought that there were indeed good species among monsters. He said, "Senior, please feel free to eat the Immortal Peaches. I will not ask you to teach me any Spells."
The person paused for a moment and remarked with admiration, "I thought all humans sought something in return for their favors. I did not expect there would be someone like you who asks for nothing in return."
Lingfeng smiled shyly and picked two more peaches to throw in the distance. The person thanked him and took the peaches.
After eating for a while, the person said, "Although there are many immortal fruits in this garden, they are still limited in number. If your sect leader discovers that the fruits are missing, will they suspect anything?"
Lingfeng was taken aback; he had only been focused on eating the fruits and had not considered such matters. With this mysterious figure bringing it up, he felt he had to be cautious. If the sect leader pursued the matter and traced it back to him, he wouldn't be too worried for himself but was concerned about putting the disciples guarding the garden in a difficult position.
However, this senior had been hiding here for a long time, and it was likely that he relied on the Immortal Fruits to survive, putting him in a difficult position.
Seeing Lingfeng lost in thought, the person said, "Child, I was born of the earth and fed by its Spiritual Energy, as well as the essence of the sun and moon. However, my spells rely on ginseng for sustenance. Thirty years ago, someone tried to capture me at any cost to obtain my essence, and I had no choice but to hide here."
"Although there are no spiritual items like ginseng here, I have come to realize that after living for so many years, I no longer need any spells. So since then, I have stopped searching for ginseng. But the Immortal Fruits in the orchard are indeed tempting, so when no one is around, I would sneak a few. However, it seems that now I must keep my mouth shut and eat less."
After hearing this, Lingfeng understood that he was trying to avoid trouble for himself and felt grateful. He boldly said, "Senior, my relationship with the Sect Master is not ordinary. If you wish to eat, please do so; what I eat will not cause any issues with the Sect Master. However, my magical power is lowly, so I cannot consume these Immortal Peaches. Therefore, I ask you to eat some other Immortal Fruits to avoid raising the Sect Master's suspicion."
The person paused and laughed heartily, saying, "Good child, you indeed have some cleverness; I have decided you are a friend." After a moment of silence, he lowered his voice and asked, "Don't you want to see my true form?"
Lingfeng certainly wanted to see the true appearance of this high being but clasped his fists and replied, "Senior wishes to remain anonymous and naturally does not want outsiders to know your true identity. As a junior, I have no right to inquire."
"Well," the person mused with satisfaction, "it’s fine for you to see; just don’t tell anyone else."
Lingfeng nodded eagerly, his anxious expression evident.
The person fell silent but noticed that a layer of white mist was rising from beneath Lingfeng's feet. The mist grew thicker and thicker.
Lingfeng was alarmed and thought, "Could this person be a local Earth Deity?"
However, what happened next astonished Lingfeng even more. As the layer of white mist receded, a tangled tree root rose from the ground, followed by a head resembling tree bark and then slender limbs. The figure was about the size of an eight or nine-year-old child, all scrunched up and making it hard to distinguish facial features.
Lingfeng was so frightened that he stumbled backward, thinking he had encountered some kind of earth spirit but tripped over the tree root beneath him and dared not move an inch thereafter.
The Tree Man scratched his head, amused by Lingfeng's actions, and laughed heartily. He reached out with his long left hand to pull Lingfeng up, but Lingfeng hesitated, afraid to give him his hand.
The Tree Man paused, perhaps a bit impatient. Without any warning from Lingfeng, he extended the whiskers on his body, effortlessly wrapping Lingfeng up and placing him on the ground.
"Seeing my true form, why are you so terrified?" the Tree Man playfully asked as he retracted his whiskers.
Lingfeng dared not be rude, fearing that the monster before him might eat him. He replied honestly, "Senior, your appearance is quite peculiar; it makes me a bit afraid."
The Tree Man looked at his own body, seemingly unconvinced. He transformed into a Young Adult.
This Young Adult was handsome and dashing, with a strong build and broad shoulders. His thick eyebrows framed a pair of bright, spirited eyes, and his long black hair flowed down to his waist, resembling a beautiful man.
Lingfeng opened his mouth but said nothing; he swallowed hard, seemingly a bit infatuated with this handsome figure.
Seeing Lingfeng in a daze made the man somewhat annoyed. He exclaimed, "You humans are truly strange. You fear my true form but are astonished by my human appearance. It's hard to please you."
Only then did Lingfeng slowly rise and hurriedly explain, "It's not that; it's just that your looks make me feel somewhat ashamed."
Upon hearing this, the man realized that he was indeed too handsome in human form but dismissed it with a shrug. "Is that so? Still, I think my true form looks better."
In truth, everything tends to think its own form is the best. For instance, if a person suddenly transformed into the shape of a lower animal, they probably wouldn't adapt well. Similarly, if an animal suddenly became human-like, it would likely bite itself in confusion.
Lingfeng understood that the "monster" before him was the same senior from earlier and felt less apprehensive. He gently asked, "May I ask what kind of being you are that has cultivated to become an immortal?"
Upon hearing this, the person realized that Lingfeng lacked discernment and did not recognize his true form, so he replied, "I am actually a Thousand-Year Ginseng!"
Lingfeng was taken aback. The Thousand-Year Ginseng was a rare entity of great understanding of the earth, and he never expected to encounter one. He exclaimed in surprise, "You are a Thousand-Year Ginseng?" He then stepped forward to examine the ginseng closely and tugged at its hair.
The ginseng, startled by Lingfeng pulling its hair, quickly used a teleportation technique to retreat a few steps and said, "My hair is transformed from my Whiskers. If you pull one out, I will lose a third of my vitality. If you accidentally pull them all out, then all my thousand years of cultivation will be in vain."
Most of the ginseng's essence was stored in its Whiskers, and the person's dark hair was indeed a manifestation of its own Whiskers. At that time, Lingfeng was unable to cultivate the Earth Escape Technique, but the ginseng had given him one of its Whiskers to enhance his Spiritual Energy and taught him the Incantation for the Earth Escape Technique, allowing Lingfeng to learn it instantly. Although Lingfeng had mastered the Earth Escape Technique, pulling out one of the ginseng's Whiskers had caused it to suffer a loss of vitality.
Realizing his mistake, Lingfeng quickly apologized, "Oh, I'm sorry! I didn't recognize your true form due to my ignorance. I only acted out of curiosity and did not mean to disturb you."
The ginseng waved its hand and said, "It's alright; ignorance is no crime. Just don't call me senior anymore, and don't refer to yourself as junior either. I know your name is Lingfeng; from now on, you can just call me Ginseng."
Lingfeng nearly stumbled upon hearing this. He felt both surprised and amused, thinking how funny it was that this thousand-year-old being had such a childish name. However, he dared not show his amusement and suppressed his laughter as he asked, "Do you have any other names?" He thought that if it were just the two of them calling each other Ginseng, it wouldn't matter much; however, if others heard it, they might think he had some peculiar preference. Moreover, he had an Enchanting companion and feared she might become jealous and end their relationship.
The ginseng pondered for a moment and murmured, "Since I became sentient, some people have called me Spirit Fruit, others have called me Thousand-Year Ginseng, and some have called me Wisdom Root. However, I have never given myself a name."
