A soft sound echoed as the wooden window was pushed open by the night wind, letting in a sliver of cool moonlight. Qin Yao opened her eyes, slightly furrowing her brows. She got up and walked to the window to close it.
The moonlight illuminated a corner of the room, revealing the white Cub curled up on the bed. It seemed sensitive to the light, shifting restlessly and letting out a low whimper.
Qin Yao approached and gently stroked its fur, speaking softly, "Don't be afraid, it's just the wind."
The Cub lifted its head, its golden eyes shining brightly in the moonlight. It stared at Qin Yao for a moment before lowering its head and rubbing against her palm, seemingly seeking affection.
A smile crept onto Qin Yao's lips; this little creature was becoming more and more affectionate. During this time, Ye Wujiu had been staying with her. Although he maintained his Cub form, Qin Yao could sense that his injuries were gradually healing.
With a creak, the door swung open, and Luo Xuan, dressed in white, entered gracefully.
"Yao Yao, are you there?" Luo Xuan's voice was clear and pleasant, like a yellow oriole in a secluded valley.
Qin Yao turned to look at her and smiled lightly, "What brings you here?"
Luo Xuan walked over to the table and set down a food box. "I made some pastries and brought them for you to try."
"Thank you for your trouble," Qin Yao replied, but her gaze fell on a disciple behind Luo Xuan, who was holding a bamboo basket. Inside the basket, a fluffy white figure could be vaguely seen.
Following her gaze, Luo Xuan smiled and explained, "Oh, you're talking about it? It accidentally ran into my yard. I thought it looked pitiful, so I brought it over to see if it belongs to you."
Internally, Qin Yao thought to herself, "Here it comes," but she maintained an indifferent expression and even showed a hint of impatience as she waved her hand dismissively. "What is this? How could I possibly keep such a thing? It's filthy."
Luo Xuan showed a hint of surprise upon hearing this. She looked at Qin Yao, then at the Cub in the basket, appearing somewhat troubled.
The Cub seemed to sense Qin Yao's disdain and shifted uneasily, poking its head out of the basket. Its golden eyes looked pitifully at Luo Xuan, letting out a whimper.
Luo Xuan's heart softened. She crouched down and gently stroked the Cub's fur, speaking softly, "Don't be afraid. You're not unwanted. I'll take you in, okay?"
The Cub seemed to understand her words, a glimmer of mischief flashing in its golden eyes. It stuck out its tongue and licked the back of Luo Xuan's hand before obediently lying back in the basket, looking harmless.
Qin Yao observed everything quietly, secretly sneering. Ye Wujiu, you really know how to act!
Seeing the Cub so well-behaved made Luo Xuan even fonder of it. She stood up and said to Qin Yao, "Yao Yao, since you don't like it, I'll take it home with me."
Qin Yao was more than happy about that. She nodded and replied, "Do as you wish."
Luo Xuan smiled and turned to leave the room with her disciple.
Qin Yao walked to the window, watching Luo Xuan's retreating figure with a playful smile curling at the corners of her mouth.
The good show has just begun.
Qin Yao returned to the table and picked up a piece of pastry made by Luo Xuan herself, eating it absentmindedly. The sweet flavor melted in her mouth but couldn't dispel the frustration rising in her heart.
As night fell, Qin Yao sat cross-legged on her bed, closing her eyes in concentration and circulating the spiritual energy within her body. However, her thoughts couldn't focus; images of Luo Xuan and Ye Wujiu being close together kept flashing before her eyes.
"Damn it!" Qin Yao suddenly opened her eyes and muttered under her breath.
She stood up and walked to the window, pushing it open and letting the cold wind brush against her cheeks. The night sky was dotted with stars, and the moonlight fell like silver, draping the earth in a layer of mystery.
Qin Yao took a deep breath, trying to calm her restless heart. She knew she couldn't go on like this; she had to find Ye Wujiu's weakness quickly to stop him from harming Luo Xuan.
With that thought, a glimmer of determination flashed in Qin Yao's eyes. She turned and returned to her desk, retrieving an ancient book from her storage pouch.
This book was something she had stumbled upon by chance, containing various strange tales and some lost secret techniques. Qin Yao flipped through its pages carefully, hoping to find information about Ye Wujiu.
Time passed slowly as Qin Yao turned page after page but found no useful clues.
Just when she was about to give up, a line of text suddenly caught her eye.
"Those of the Demon Clan are born bloodthirsty, their nature brutal and difficult to tame. If one wishes to control the Demon Clan, only..."
Qin Yao's heart skipped a beat. She held her breath and continued reading.
However, the following content had been torn away, leaving only a fragment of "only."
"Damn it!" Qin Yao slammed the book shut, frustration evident in her eyes.
