After Marco left, I didn't feel like talking for a long time. I wanted to understand my situation and figure out what kind of life I really wanted.
If it weren't for the unexpected changes in my life, forcing me to break free from my constraints, I might never have pursued my dreams like Marco did. I would have been stuck in the same place forever.
In the two years that I have lived with Betty, our relationship has always been very good. I also get along very well with Jonas. In a sense, he is my spiritual motivation. Every time I see him, I can feel his struggle on the edge of life and death, and see his exhaustion from this hopeless and devastating life, yet he still manages to hold on with sheer willpower.
Of course, money is a factor here, but it is more related to this woman, Selena.
I admit that I have had very little contact with women, but a woman like Selena probably won't appear in my life for a second time.
Jonas has five children. The eldest daughter is from Joe and his ex-wife. The remaining four children, two of whom are not Joe's biological children, were brought by Selena. Furthermore, these two children do not have the same father, as Selena had them with two different men. I only found out about this later.
Is Selena this woman a husband-killer?
I heard that her first man died from drinking. It is said that after they had a fight, he went out to drink and never came back. Later, he was found dead on the roadside.
It's puzzling that this woman remarried so quickly. The speed of her remarriage makes people doubt her attitude towards relationships. Her own man had just left not long ago, and she's already in a hurry to remarry. Is there a problem inside? I'm just thinking to myself.
She lived with the second man for less than a year and gave birth to a child. When the child was just over a year old, they were rejected by the family and both the adults and the child were kicked out of the house.
The origin of these two children is like this. What happened in the meantime is unknown. Later, she met Jonas and they started living together.
I have never asked Jonas why he is with Selena. I just know that I can ask him, and he is a sincere person who never lies to me. From the moment of our encounter, I could feel that he truly considered me a friend, and later, he treated me like family.
Later, I slowly discovered that Selena is not a bad person, but she has a sharp tongue. Once she catches a hold of something, she will blow it out of proportion, unleashing her boundless imagination. Her mouth is like a machine gun, constantly firing off hurtful words, capable of destroying a person's will. I find it hard to imagine how Jonas is being tormented every day and how he manages to persevere. Suddenly, I have a bit more awe for him.
"Is it so difficult for you to speak up to Betty? You old stubborn thing, are you unable to see me happy!"
"We'll think of other ways. Please give me a few days, I will definitely handle it! We've already caused enough trouble for the two children. They also need to live, we can't cause them any more trouble. I must have accumulated some good karma in my past life to have met such a good child like Xiao Bei!"
"What's so difficult for them? Betty has found work, hasn't she? Seeing Lova like this, she can just stand by and watch, when it's a matter of life and death. Are you trying to force me to go out and sell myself? Useless, incompetent, worthless!"
"There will be a way!"
"What can you do? If you can't come up with the money, don't come back, or else I'll exchange your life for my daughter's! Get out of here, don't bother us! Useless person!"
This is a conversation I overheard outside Jonas's house. I was afraid to confront Jonas face to face, and we would both feel awkward, so I slipped away and didn't want to see him in a difficult situation.
Later, I also heard that Selena not only has a sharp tongue, but she also physically assaults people. When she gets angry, she is really fierce. The neighbors have seen Selena physically attack Jonas, slapping him hard. Nine out of ten men would not stand by and do nothing, but Jonas is the one who chooses to remain motionless, allowing himself to be manipulated, and sometimes even being hit with a rolling pin.
The next day, Selena came to me again. I didn't know how she would treat me, but I knew she was definitely here for money.
Sure enough! To pay for Lova's medical treatment, she asked to borrow a large sum of money from me. This time it was not a small amount. I didn't agree immediately. I told her I didn't have that much and that I would figure something out. The reality was indeed so. The amount of money Selena asked for was an entire year's income for me. I really didn't have that much. She was clearly very unhappy, as if she felt I was deceiving her.
Because of this, I also had some issues with Betty. We had planned to have our own child, but now our only savings will be taken away for them. To be honest, I feel extremely unfair about this. Because of this, Betty and I had a quarrel, and I even spoke disrespectfully to her, saying that I would never want a child in this lifetime.
Because of this, I haven't touched her for several months.
With this money, Lova's tuberculosis can be treated. The money was spent, but fortunately the illness has been cured, and the person is getting better day by day.
Our lives are just a dead loop, good today, bad tomorrow, while Jonas's life is always half-dead. It's like he's on the verge of death, still struggling to survive, living in a suffocating manner, which really breaks people's hearts.
To be honest, Betty and I could have lived more relaxed lives, but because of our relationship with Jonas, we have to frequently come to their aid. There's no way around it. I can't bear to see Jonas suffer, and he's doing his best.
Later on, Betty unexpectedly became pregnant, which made me overjoyed and gave me new hope for the future. We were immersed in happiness. We shared this good news with Jonas, who was moved to tears. He told us not to let Selena hear about this news, as she would be upset and might cause some trouble.
We promised to come.
But the bad news still came!
During the third month of Betty's pregnancy, she suddenly miscarried. I vividly remember that night when she said her stomach hurt, and then she started bleeding. I saw the blood flowing down from between her legs and heard Betty's painful groans.
I was at a loss for what to do, quickly covered her with a blanket, carried her out of the room, stopped a car on the street, and rushed to the hospital.
