Uncle Chen looked at us and said, "How about this? Let's go find the village chief. If the village chief speaks, your mother won't dare to ignore it."
The village chief? Is he even more meddlesome than Uncle Chen? I silently calculated in my mind. Although the village chief isn't as nosy as Uncle Chen, he still has a certain authority since he is the head of the village. If we can get him to help us, that would be perfect.
Yangyang and I exchanged a glance and nodded in agreement. Uncle Chen led us to find the village chief, and on the way, he explained the situation. Sure enough, the village chief agreed to help us.
We marched over to the the Ma Family, with Uncle Chen shouting at the top of his lungs, "Old Ma! Old Ma!"
Ma Zhigang poked his head out from inside the house, looking confused when he saw Uncle Chen and the village chief. "What's going on?"
Uncle Chen pulled him over and explained the situation, leaving Ma Zhigang even more bewildered. He looked at Yangyang and me and asked, "Did all your clothes get washed away?"
I nodded and squeezed out two tears. "Dad, I'm sorry, it's all my fault. I let Mom wash all my clothes and they got washed away..."
Ma Zhigang stared at me wide-eyed, seemingly unable to understand why I was so foolish. I continued to embellish my story: "Dad, Mom said that if I lost the clothes..."
"Just let me die, but I can't bear to leave you all. What should I do?" Yangyang spoke up at the right moment: "Yes, Dad, Jingjing and I don't want to die. Can you save us?" Ma Zhigang was still in shock when Uncle Chen and the village chief chimed in.
"Old Ma, I'm not saying this to criticize you, but daughters-in-law are meant to be cherished. How can you let them do hard labor?"
"Exactly! If we had come a little later, these two girls would have been dead!"
Ma Zhigang was bewildered by their words and could only nod: "Yes, yes, you're right." He looked at me and said, "It's just a few pieces of clothing; if they get washed away, then so be it."
I continued to blame myself: "Dad, it's all my fault. If I had been more careful, this wouldn't have happened. If Mom gets angry, just say it's my fault and don't blame Yangyang."
Yangyang panicked: "No, Dad, it's all my fault. Don't blame Jingjing."
Ma Zhigang looked at us, wanting to cry but having no tears. When he heard that the clothes had been washed away, he was taken aback: "What? The clothes were washed away?" For a poor family, clothing is a crucial resource because they can't afford to buy new ones. With Uncle Chen and the village chief present, Ma Zhigang couldn't lose his temper and could only ask for the specifics.
Yangyang said regretfully:
"Dad, don't blame Jingjing, it's all my fault. I didn't take care of the clothes."
Yangyang and I held our heads and cried, drawing the attention of the neighbors.
"Oh dear, these two girls are so pitiful."
"Exactly, Ma Zhigang is really heartless, how can he treat these two girls like this!"
"Disgusting, he's not human!"
Ma Zhigang's face turned red from the criticism, but he didn't dare to retort; he could only glare fiercely at Yangyang and me.
Uncle Chen and the village chief urged the neighbors to go home, then told Ma Zhigang that such things must not happen again.
Ma Zhigang nodded repeatedly as he saw them off.
Yangyang and I exchanged a glance and breathed a sigh of relief.
Liu Cuiyun was cooking at home when Ma Zhigang, filled with anger, kicked her down: "You lazy woman, you can't even keep an eye on one piece of clothing!"
Liu Cuiyun was stunned: "What are you doing, head of the household?"
Ma Zhigang's face turned red with rage: "How can you even ask!"
Liu Cuiyun was furious and wanted to hit Yangyang and me, but the neighbors stopped her and dragged her back inside.
Ma Zhigang apologized while sending them out and then closed the door.
Liu Cuiyun was pointed at by the neighbors, crying in anger.
Ma Zhigang looked at Liu Cuiyun's disgraceful state and recalled the green hat from last night, feeling nauseous with anger.
