Zhang Yang could not afford to hesitate. With all his strength, he launched a massive fireball, about a meter in diameter, that circled the edge of the table where the bowl of water sat, fiercely igniting. The water from the kettle had not even reached the bowl before it turned into vapor, and the water in the bowl was dried up.
A loud buzzing sound echoed as nine tables came to a halt.
Zhang Yang immediately dashed out, striking at the man with an open palm from a distance. The formation was broken, and the man, already in a state of panic, hurriedly raised his arms to block the attack. He was sent flying backward and crashed into a table behind him with a loud crash.
Zhang Yang landed next to the man and swiftly grabbed his wrist.
“Who are you really?” Zhang Yang shouted sternly.
The man coughed violently, spitting out blood. Just as he was about to speak, there was a loud clatter as the security door outside lifted. Ponytail Girl rushed in and, seeing the man spitting blood, shouted and lunged toward him.
“Brother!!!”
Then she glared angrily at Zhang Yang: “We have no grievances with you, yet you resort to murder?”
“Murder? Your brother set up the Nine Wood Circular Formation. If I hadn’t accidentally depleted its core, I might have been the one dead!”
“You actually know this is the Nine Wood Circular Formation?” The man's expression changed drastically. “Which lineage of the Twelve Earthly Branches are you from?”
“Hmph, I am not one of you crooked practitioners. If the Toothless Mouse wants to kill me and sets up the Bagua Infinite Formation, I would still break through.”
“Let go of me, and I will not make another move.” The man's expression softened somewhat as he spoke in a deep voice.
Zhang Yang glanced at the brother and sister duo before releasing his grip. The man stood up, rinsed his mouth with a bowl of water, and said to Ponytail Girl: “I’m fine.”
“Please come to the private room upstairs for a chat!” The man gestured invitingly toward Zhang Yang.
Several staff members entered from outside and began tidying up the chaotic scene in the hall while Zhang Yang and the siblings made their way to a private room upstairs.
“I am Yu Qingwei. May I ask your name?”
“Zhang Yang.”
“May I inquire about your sect?”
"Self-taught!"
The man named Yu Qingwei shook his head and then pointed to the Ponytail Girl, introducing her, "This is my junior sister, Yuan Yi."
Zhang Yang nodded.
"There was a misunderstanding earlier. I didn't mean to force you to perform magic; I suspected you might be using your mind to perceive the cards and thought a Dao Gate expert had come to provoke us, so I wanted to investigate," Yu Qingwei explained. He then added, "I didn't expect someone so young to have such powerful Spiritual Energy."
"I am not one of your Dao Gate people," Zhang Yang said lightly. "My conflict with Toothless is merely because someone paid him to kill me. The person funding him is notorious for his misdeeds; I simply cannot stand it."
While Zhang Yang claimed to be self-taught, Yu Qingwei certainly did not believe it. However, he did believe that Zhang Yang was not from the Dao Gate; his Spiritual Energy seemed innate rather than acquired through cultivation.
"I am also not from the Dao Gate; I just learned a few spells from my ancestors. I see you are extraordinary, and since you have a grudge against Toothless, let me share some background," Yu Qingwei said.
"I would like to hear more," Zhang Yang interjected. He vaguely felt that the cultivation of Strange Soul was related to Xuan Zhenzi's Soul Requiem Blade and that this encounter with Yu Qingwei could yield some insights.
"You must have heard of the Twelve Earthly Branches sect?" Yu Qingwei asked.
"I have heard a little. The Twelve Earthly Branches have a common master who is proficient in the Heavenly Dry Technique, but it seems he could not achieve higher aspirations alone and took in twelve disciples to cultivate Earthly Branch Techniques. In the end, he failed to attain the Great Way and has since vanished. The Twelve Earthly Branches sect is merely a loose term for those practicing their own methods. However, I only know about Toothless Mouse and Rooster of Iron Feathers."
"You already know quite a bit," Yu Qingwei said. "My ancestor was Azure Dragon Soars. However, he has passed away."
"Hmm?" Zhang Yang thought to himself, surprised that a descendant of Dragon of the Morning Star was here in Haizhou.
"My ancestor's master was known as Tian Yi Sheng and had great mastery over the Heavenly Dry Technique. The Heavenly Dry Technique primarily involves harnessing the Spiritual Energy of heaven and earth for Qi manipulation. Your Spiritual Energy has similarities with the Heavenly Dry Technique," Yu Qingwei explained.
Tian Yi Sheng undoubtedly obtained a rare book called Jiazi Rainbow Shadow. This book is a manual for practicing Earthly Branch Techniques, and most importantly, it mentions that combining it with the Heavenly Dry Technique could lead to ascension.
Ascension is the dream of countless practitioners. Tian Yi Sheng treasured this discovery and chose an unnamed desolate mountain, naming it Earthly Branch Mountain, where he built Zichen Temple and began studying Jiazi Rainbow Shadow. However, he found that Earthly Branch Techniques primarily utilized the resources of the earth for calculations and evolution while placing greater emphasis on formations, which differed fundamentally from the essence of practicing the Heavenly Dry Technique. Due to Tian Yi Sheng's long-term practice of the Heavenly Dry Technique, he could not master authentic Earthly Branch Techniques.
To remedy this, he sought out twelve highly talented disciples to guide them in practicing Earthly Branch Techniques. Initially, these twelve disciples made significant progress and were on the verge of forming a Twelve Earthly Branches formation with their Spiritual Energy when combined with Tian Yi Sheng's Heavenly Dry Technique for ascension.
However, on the eve of setting up the formation, Tian Yi Sheng mysteriously disappeared. His disciples were all astonished and eventually scattered. This incident occurred during the Republic Era.
Toothless Mouse and Azure Dragon Soars were Tian Yi Sheng's two favorite disciples and had also attained the highest levels of cultivation among them.
After the disciples dispersed, Flying Dragon once encountered Tian Yi Sheng in a dream. Tian Yi Sheng stated that his soul had been shattered, and with the last remnants of his consciousness, he came to inform him that the one who harmed his master was Toothless Mouse. Moreover, Toothless had stolen the Jiazi Rainbow Shadow, and besides practicing cultivation methods, he sought it because it concealed a massive treasure secret.
The dream flashed by, and Flying Dragon could not fathom what despicable means Toothless had employed. Given Toothless's cultivation level, it was impossible for him to harm Tian Yi Sheng to the point of soul shattering through direct confrontation. From then on, searching for Toothless and reclaiming the Jiazi Rainbow Shadow became Flying Dragon's lifelong aspiration.
"However, my ancestor spent his entire life without fulfilling this aspiration. After my ancestor passed away, Toothless became even more unrestrained and actually occupied Zichen Temple himself. He must have gleaned some method from the Jiazi Rainbow Shadow; now he is over 110 years old but still strong and healthy," Yu Qingwei pondered.
"Why are you telling me all this? We are merely strangers who crossed paths," Zhang Yang asked.
"Because we are friends," Yu Qingwei replied with a slight smile. "The enemy of my enemy is my friend. My ancestor's dying wish was to eliminate Toothless and reclaim the Jiazi Rainbow Shadow. You possess remarkable skills; perhaps we can join forces."
"Toothless is strong and healthy, using the method of Yin Absorption to Supplement Yang," Zhang Yang said. "I fear we are not his match yet. He set up the Bagua Infinite Formation; if it weren't for my good luck, I would have likely perished long ago."
"What was his reaction when you broke through the formation?" Yu Qingwei asked.
"It seemed like he shouted 'Soul Refining Master,'" Zhang Yang recalled. "Then there was some fear. After I fell off the cliff, I suspect he left."
"Soul Refining Master?!" Yu Qingwei exclaimed in surprise.
