Xin Yi reached out a hand to support Shen Shanshan's shoulder, while the other hand held her head to prevent it from shaking mechanically. Although Shen Shanshan's head had stopped moving from side to side, her mumbling did not cease. She kept repeating, "Why did you lie to me? Please stop joking around; this isn't funny at all..."
Xin Yi spoke in a hoarse voice, "Shanshan, please listen to me. This is my fault; I should have told you sooner. I was wrong... I..."
However, Shen Shanshan ignored Xin Yi's words, continuing her muttering. It seemed that the impact of this situation was too great for her to process, or perhaps she subconsciously did not want to confront it. The pain was something she felt unable to bear, and if remaining in this state allowed her to temporarily forget the hurt, she would prefer to stay like this.
But Xin Yi could not allow her to continue like this. It was a form of mental illness, akin to an ostrich hiding its head in the sand when faced with danger; the danger would not disappear just because one chose to ignore it. Such negative closure would only lead to deeper emotional turmoil over time, potentially resulting in a mental breakdown. This kind of case was not uncommon in the field of mental health. Therefore, Xin Yi would rather Shen Shanshan wake up and vent her feelings—whether by hitting herself, cursing herself, or crying freely—than remain in this dazed state. So Xin Yi shook Shen Shanshan's shoulders and raised his voice, shouting, "Shanshan, listen to me!"
Xin Yi's voice echoed loudly across the open Riverside area. Finally, Shen Shanshan was startled awake by his shout. She looked up at him and suddenly her eyes turned red; tears streamed down her face like a burst dam. Xin Yi's eyes also reddened, but he held back the tears that threatened to spill from his irritated nose and took a deep breath before saying, "Shanshan, I know I hurt you, but I..."
"Stop talking! Don't say anything!" Shen Shanshan raised both hands still holding her shoes to cover her ears and shook her head vigorously. Tears fell from her face with each movement. Suddenly, she broke free from Xin Yi's grip on her shoulder and turned to run down the steps towards the Riverside. Xin Yi took a couple of steps after her but then stopped, thinking it might be better for her to calm down alone. Chasing after her wouldn't help and might only make her more upset. He could only hope she would find a way to overcome the pain he had caused her. Sighing inwardly, he thought about how deeply he had sinned.
Xin Yi watched as Shen Shanshan cried and rushed down the steps by the Riverside. Suddenly, she stepped on the edge of a step and lost her balance, tumbling down the stairs. The momentum caused her body to roll further down uncontrollably. The crystal sandals she had thrown from her hands flew far away, tracing an arc in the air before landing at the bottom of the steps.
"Shanshan!" Xin Yi exclaimed as he sprang into action like an arrow released from a bow. He didn't stop on the steps; his toes barely touched them as he leaped downwards. Shen Shanshan lay motionless at the bottom of the steps beside the sandals she had thrown away. "Shanshan!" Xin Yi called again, but Shen Shanshan's eyes were tightly shut; she showed no response to his calls. The tears that Xin Yi had been holding back finally spilled over at that moment. He quickly knelt beside Shen Shanshan and reached for her neck artery; thankfully, she seemed only unconscious. After checking her body for visible injuries and finding none, he concluded that either she had hit her head or was temporarily unconscious due to shock.
It was crucial to get her to a hospital as soon as possible; calling an ambulance would waste precious time. Slowly, Xin Yi slid his hands under Shen Shanshan's body and lifted her carefully while trying to keep her lying flat. He placed Shen Shanshan on the back seat and secured her upper body with a seatbelt before jumping into the driver's seat and speeding towards Longchuan City First Hospital. Fortunately, his car had excellent shock absorption capabilities, and since Riverside Avenue was well-maintained as part of Longchuan City's infrastructure project, there were no bumps along the way that would hinder his speed.
The car quickly entered the main urban area where Xin Yi drove as if he were flying through traffic, weaving left and right amidst congested vehicles that honked in response. Many drivers who saw a dark shape zip past their cars initially wanted to shout curses about reckless driving but were soon impressed by how skillfully Xin Yi maneuvered through traffic without losing speed or control.
Xin Yi ran three red lights before being pursued by a Police Motorcycle flashing blue and white lights behind him. Due to its smaller size and agility in navigating through traffic, the motorcycle kept pace with Xin Yi's SUV despite its bulkier frame. A chase ensued between them on the crowded road; although Xin Yi noticed the police motorcycle trailing him long ago, he couldn't afford to care about it now—saving Shen Shanshan's life took precedence over everything else. Not even a whole special forces unit could deter him at this moment; whatever consequences awaited him later could be dealt with afterward.
Finally reaching Longchuan City First Hospital in record time, Xin Yi parked directly at the entrance of the outpatient building before jumping out and opening the back door to release Shen Shanshan’s seatbelt carefully. Just as he lifted Shen Shanshan out of the car intending to rush inside, the pursuing Police Motorcycle screeched up behind him and blocked his path with a sudden stop right in front of him. The officer riding it wore a helmet and sunglasses while dressed in uniform as a Traffic Police officer.
Xin Yi saw that the Traffic Police had blocked his way with a vehicle, and he frowned slightly, coldly commanding, "Move aside!"
The Traffic Police was momentarily stunned by Xin Yi's shout. Just as he was about to recite the traffic rules and penalties he knew by heart, he suddenly noticed what Xin Yi was holding. It turned out that he had violated the rules in order to save someone, which could be considered understandable. Although there would still be a penalty, saving the person came first. Thus, the Traffic Police quickly moved his motorcycle back to clear a path for Xin Yi, who was carrying Shen Shanshan. As soon as Xin Yi rushed into the lobby, he shouted loudly, "Doctor! Nurse! Emergency!"
At this moment, the Traffic Police had parked his motorcycle and entered as well. Seeing that Xin Yi had called several times without any doctors or nurses coming forward, he anxiously took off his sunglasses and shouted, "Where are all the doctors and nurses?! Didn't you hear the emergency call?! Hurry up!" To his surprise, it was a sharp female voice; it turned out that this single-minded officer was quite a heroine.
Just then, several nurses pushed a stretcher around the corner and called for Xin Yi to place Shen Shanshan on it. They wheeled the stretcher into the elevator, and Xin Yi followed inside. However, as soon as he stepped into the elevator and turned around, he found that the Female Traffic Officer had also entered. The nurses exchanged glances but said nothing. Xin Yi was primarily concerned about Shen Shanshan, so he had no time to pay attention to the Traffic Police.
Next, Shen Shanshan was taken into the Examination Room for a full-body check-up. Since it was unclear where she was injured, scans were conducted on her entire body, including her head and internal organs. Xin Yi was sent downstairs by the doctor to complete some paperwork. This time, the Traffic Police did not follow him but waited outside the Examination Room, knowing that Xin Yi would return.
After completing the paperwork, Xin Yi thought it necessary to inform the Shen Family, so he called Shen Liwei. He briefly explained Shen Shanshan's situation, stating only that she had fallen down some stairs and lost consciousness. He did not mention why she fell because it wasn't necessary; once Shen Shanshan recovered, she could decide whether or not to tell her family about it. After all, this incident might be somewhat embarrassing for her. Upon receiving Xin Yi's call, Shen Liwei was shocked and expressed his disbelief with a series of exclamations about fate and the stairs at Riverside before finally saying he would notify their mother immediately and rush to the hospital.
Once everything was settled, Xin Yi returned upstairs. At this point, the female Traffic Police was still sitting on a bench outside the Examination Room. After arriving, Xin Yi sat down heavily on the bench as well while waiting for news about Shen Shanshan. The Female Traffic Officer felt it was time to address the violation issue, so she stood up from the bench and walked over to Xin Yi, first saluting him before saying, "Comrade..."
However, she was interrupted by Xin Yi's action; without saying a word, he pulled out a set of keys from his pocket and handed them to her. The unexpected gesture left the Female Traffic Officer momentarily speechless, causing her to drop her line of questioning and instead ask in confusion, "What does this mean?"
"This is the car key; do whatever you need to do. You can tow it or drive it away; it's up to you. My driver's license is in the car too; if you want to take points off my license, go ahead. Now, leave me alone!" said Xin Yi, coldly. His mood was indeed terrible at that moment; he didn't want to waste time talking with anyone and certainly didn't want to hear any traffic regulations from this officer.
"What kind of attitude is this?!" The female officer felt provoked by Xin Yi's demeanor. She was naturally aggressive and had almost lost her temper at the entrance of the outpatient building but held back due to understanding that he was anxious about saving someone. However, after waiting for so long only to receive such an attitude from him made it hard for her not to explode.
Ignoring her question entirely, Xin Yi coldly stated, "Is there going to be a fine?" As he spoke, he pulled out his wallet and handed over a stack of cash saying, "You decide how much you want to fine me; I’ll say it again—leave me alone!"
