Regarding his words, Mo Xier did not take them to heart at all. What danger could there possibly be in this desolate ancient place? Instead, she thought about how to escape from this cursed location.
"Also, don't think I don't know your little thoughts. The escape tactic won't work on me. You are aware of my identity, and finding someone is not a difficult task for me."
The threatening words came with a cold gaze, sharp like the wind in February, piercing her heart. His fingers slowly covered the teacup beside him, tapping it seemingly casually, but it struck Mo Xier's heart like a warning bell.
She instinctively nodded in agreement; she had not forgotten the cup that had met a tragic end at his hands.
In a corner of the General's residence, within the vast Buddha Hall filled with swirling smoke, the scent of Musk permeated the air like that of an ancestral hall.
Old Madam knelt before the Bodhisattva, turning the Buddhist beads in her hands and murmuring prayers as if beseeching something.
Rong Mama pushed the door open from outside and carefully walked to her side, whispering, "Old Madam, I have inquired thoroughly. It is indeed strange that no one encountered the young master on his way back."
That brief statement was enough to prove that Night Star was in trouble! However, she could not understand what kind of situation could cause this usually cautious man to show even a hint of panic today.
"Have you sent someone to investigate that woman's background? Is there any result?"
"Not yet," Rong Mama carefully helped Old Madam up from the ground and continued, "However, it is strange; it seems that this woman appeared out of nowhere. The people I sent to investigate reported back that they need more time to look into her."
Old Madam sat down at the table, her fingers spinning the Buddhist beads even faster. The scene where Mo Xier had clashed with her was still hard for her to forget.
"I saw that woman today; she seemed to have White Hair. Send someone to carefully check Night Star's courtyard, and remember not to let anyone discover you."
Upon hearing this, Rong Mama couldn't help but be startled and asked in surprise, "Could it be that Old Madam is worried about that legend?"
The legend she spoke of was the one that had been passed down for thousands of years in the Heavenly Universe Kingdom. It was said that every three hundred years, a White-Haired Woman would appear, and at that time, the Heavenly Universe Kingdom would be plunged into suffering and despair.
Because this legend was known by very few people, and even those who knew it did not take it seriously, no one paid it any mind.
Old Madam furrowed her brows tightly. If it weren't for the glimpse of White Hair she had seen today, she would not have believed in the existence of this legend!
"It is better to believe it exists than to believe it does not. If such a woman truly exists in this world, I will never allow her to live peacefully and threaten the Emperor's Empire!"
When she mentioned the Emperor, a dazzling light suddenly burst forth from Old Madam's eyes, like a shooting star falling from the sky. Although it flashed by in an instant, it left a lasting impression on everyone present.
Meanwhile, in the courtyard, Mo Xier was completely unaware that she had already fallen into a dangerous whirlpool. She was sitting by the window, bored, playing with the hairpin in her hand.
One hand propped up her chin on the table while the other absentmindedly twirled the golden fork, producing a tinkling sound. Her eyes were unfocused as she stared out the window, lost in thought.
She had been here for several days now. From initially being unable to sleep due to discomfort to gradually accepting her situation, the only thing she couldn't let go of was her parents back in the modern world.
Thinking about how her parents must feel after raising their daughter for over twenty years only to have her suddenly disappear made her feel a pang of sadness, causing her eyes to become slightly moist.
"Miss, what are you thinking about? Why are you crying?" Ru Er entered with pastries and saw this scene.
Putting away her thoughts, Mo Xier immediately raised a smile. "How could I be crying? I just squinted my eyes because of the wind by the window."
As she spoke, she rubbed her eyes, and the tears vanished instantly. In front of others, she wanted to show that she was carefree and strong, not weak and fragile.
Seeing this, Ru Er did not press further and cheerfully said, "Miss, come quickly and try this! I specially asked the chef to make it for you. It must have been tiring visiting Old Madam today?"
Upon hearing that there was food, Mo Xier's eyes lit up instantly as she almost flew over. The fragrant and sticky pastries were something so exquisite that she had never seen even in modern times!
"This is Osmanthus Cake, this is Ruyi Dumpling, this is Pineapple Cake."
Following Ru Er's words, she was so tempted that she almost drooled. She set aside her previous unpleasant feelings and picked up the food to enjoy it heartily.
One cannot always be sad; since she was here, she might as well make the best of it. She never wasted time on things that could not be changed!
That night, the general's residence was quiet. Even the attendant on duty leaned against the wall and dozed off slightly. In stark contrast to this silence was the courtyard of Night Star.
A figure in black nimbly scaled the wall and landed without a sound, like a shadow in the night, slowly infiltrating every corner of the courtyard.
Lying in bed, Night Star suddenly opened his eyes. Years of warfare had honed his instincts; he would wake up alert at the slightest sign of an intruder. This had become almost a reflex.
However, he lay still in bed. If he guessed correctly, this person's target should be that woman.
Sure enough, the figure in black did not glance at Night Star's room but headed straight for the adjacent one.
The room inside was dimly lit, and a woman lay sprawled across the bed, sound asleep, showing no signs of femininity! Her long black hair was casually spread across the bed, and under the flickering candlelight, she appeared extraordinarily alluring.
Just as the man in black intended to approach for a closer look, the woman on the bed suddenly stirred as if about to wake up, startling him into retreating quickly for fear of being discovered.
To his surprise, she merely turned over onto her side, facing away from him, and continued to sleep deeply, though her hand quietly clenched the blanket beneath her.
In fact, Mo Xier had already woken up when he entered. Not understanding his intentions, she could only pretend to be asleep to let him lower his guard.
This reaction amused Night Star, who had been watching from the shadows. He had thought this woman feared nothing; who would have thought she would be so scared? When someone intruded, she only dared to act like a turtle withdrawing into its shell!
Fortunately, the man in black did not do anything further; after checking around, he left, causing her to breathe a sigh of relief.
"Are you not coming out? Are you planning to spend the night on the beam?" Mo Xier slowly sat up, wrapping herself in the blanket, and suddenly spoke loudly.
Night Star, who had been quietly observing from the side, suddenly froze. His skills were not low; in fact, he had deeper internal strength than that man in black, which allowed him to remain undetected in the room for so long.
However, according to his observations that day, this woman lacked even the most basic internal energy. How did she know of his presence?
"Is being a gentleman on the beam really that enjoyable?" Mo Xier couldn't help but look up; this man was indeed hard to see through.
In the middle of the night, he came to her room and saw a dangerous figure approaching her without coming down to save her. She simply couldn't understand what he was there for!
Since she had already been discovered, there was little point in staying up there any longer. He calmly turned over and jumped down, a faint smile appearing at the corner of his mouth.
Yet this smile looked particularly eerie in the dead of night, making one feel a chill run down their spine.
"How did you know I was in the room? Don't you have no internal energy at all? Or did you deliberately hide it when I checked your pulse that day?"
"A woman's intuition; you wouldn't understand even if I told you," Mo Xier shot him an annoyed glance and continued, "And as for what you call internal energy, I don't understand it at all. I just know that as long as someone enters, I can sense it!"
Her gaze was steady; she didn't seem to be lying. Night Star was also certain that no one could hide their internal energy from him.
Turning his head to notice the candlestick on the table and her scattered hair, his eyes deepened further. This woman was definitely not as simple as she appeared.
"You knew someone would come? That's why you kept the light on and let your hair down so that anyone coming could clearly see everything they wanted to know."
"I was just guessing; I didn't expect someone would actually come!" She suddenly picked up a soft pillow from the bed and threw it at him. "Isn't this the General's residence? How could someone break in at midnight!"
Heaven knows how tormenting this night had been for her. Having died once made her cherish her life even more; she simply couldn't afford to sleep soundly!
Caught off guard by the sudden pillow attack, Night Star never expected that one day he would be treated this way by a woman!
"Who told you that the General's residence is absolutely safe? I reminded you during the day to be cautious," he said in a cold tone, instinctively taking a few steps back to maintain a safe distance from her, to avoid being hit by anything unexpected again.
"Why didn't you catch him? Can you really tolerate someone trespassing into your courtyard like this?"
Under the candlelight, Night Star's smile had long disappeared, leaving only endless indifference. "Since you want to know, I'll let him understand that sometimes letting the tiger return to the mountain is the only way to find out who is behind him."
His icy gaze locked onto her eyes as he softly asked, "Do you think it's better to catch a Minion or to capture the mastermind behind it?"
His tone slightly rose; although it was smooth, it carried an alluring undertone that made Mo Xier feel drawn in!
Thinking of this, she couldn't help but avert her gaze. Damn it!
What was going on? She had seen plenty of handsome men in modern times, so why did she find this man in front of her so attractive? She couldn't help but want to look at him! Before she knew it, all her attention was drawn to him!
"Moreover, this person came prepared. The guards outside have been drugged with an aphrodisiac. Aren't you curious who cares so much about you that they would go to such lengths just to catch a glimpse of your hair?"
"Not hard to guess." Mo Xier wasn't foolish; if anyone was unusually concerned about her, it could only be the Old Madam she had seen today.
