Xinran felt as if she had fallen into an endless black hole, where everything was pitch dark and she could see nothing, only able to grope her way forward slowly. Suddenly, a light appeared before her; she rushed toward it like a thirsty person encountering a waterhole, but no matter how long she walked, the light remained just out of reach...
With a startled cry, Xinran opened her eyes, a tear sliding down her cheek. Everything that had just played out in her mind felt like a nightmare, yet it was so real that she could hardly determine what surrounded her at that moment or where she was.
"You're awake?" Mu Shaosi saw Xinran open her eyes and restrained his excitement, sitting calmly on the sofa beside the hospital bed. In truth, he wanted nothing more than to get up and embrace the woman who had finally awakened after so long. However, he had always been accustomed to controlling his emotions, not letting anyone see what he was thinking. So even though he felt immense joy and relief at this moment, he would not allow himself to indulge.
Xinran stared blankly at the ceiling above her, her mind racing with memories of what had happened before. There had been a gunfight outside the nightclub; she had been shielded by Mu Shaosi. Then she felt a bullet aimed at him and instinctively blocked it for him. After that, everything went dark. She had thought she would die but was surprised to find that she was still alive!
She moved slightly, feeling some numbness in her body. It seemed she had been lying in the hospital bed for quite a while. Struggling to sit up, she heard a man beside her asking if she was awake. She simply chose to ignore him; wasn't it obvious since she had opened her eyes? There was no need for such small talk.
"Don't move around too much; your chest wound hasn't healed yet. Be careful not to strain it!" Mu Shaosi came to the bedside, supporting Xinran's shoulder to help her sit up a bit and placed a pillow behind her back with careful and gentle movements.
"Thank you!" Xinran replied coldly without looking away.
"No, I should be the one thanking you. You saved me; otherwise, I would have been the one shot." Mu Shaosi tucked a loose strand of hair behind Xinran's ear and sat at the edge of the bed, gazing deeply at her.
"No need to be polite." As Xinran met Mu Shaosi's gaze filled with deep emotion, an unprecedented sense of unease washed over her. His look reminded her of when he had schemed to pursue her; everything back then felt like a deception. Yet now, it didn't seem any more real either. Not wanting to maintain eye contact any longer, Xinran turned her face away.
"The bullet was only two centimeters away from hitting your heart. If it had struck your heart, there would have been no turning back. So Xinran, can you promise me not to do something like this again? I'm not afraid of getting hurt; I'm only afraid of losing you. You can't imagine how scared I was when I saw the doctors trying to save you in the operating room..." Mu Shaosi reached out gently to hold Xinran's delicate hand and spoke with emotion.
"I'm truly sorry for scaring you, but you really don't need to feel this way just because I saved you. What I did wasn't anything extraordinary; even if it weren't you at that moment, I would have done the same. You might think I'm overly kind-hearted or too good-natured, but honestly, when I blocked that bullet, I never thought I was doing it for you!" Xinran turned her face coldly and looked at Mu Shaosi, saying this softly yet firmly.
"So what?" Mu Shaosi could tell that she didn't really want to see him. He never thought that her willingness to take a bullet for him meant she had forgiven him, but he wouldn't leave just because of a few cold words from her. He had already decided that he would never let her go easily in this lifetime...
"You can leave now. I want to be alone, okay?"
"If I say no, what will you do? No matter how much you deny it, you deliberately saved me. In the end, you saved me, so I won't leave this hospital room. Staying by your side is the only thing I can do for you right now!"
