A glimmer of light led A Niu away.
Fengyin also seemed to have exhausted all her energy, softly collapsing in Hibiscus's embrace.
The night breeze brushed against their faces, and everyone was sweating on their backs.
Mel and Spiritual Incense gradually woke up, with Spiritual Incense burying herself in Mel's arms, unable to hold back her tears. The supernatural experience had frightened her greatly. Mel was also sweating profusely, trying to comfort Spiritual Incense while pretending to be strong.
The most comfortable one was probably Jinse; she had fainted early on and now seemed to be asleep. Xuan Li smiled helplessly and carried her back to the room.
Hibiscus also carried Fengyin back to his room without saying a word; this was beyond their understanding.
It turned out that Jinse was supposed to sleep with Fengyin, but now they were each lying in the beds of their beloved ones. Hibiscus and Xuan Li were not gods; they could feel fear too. Only by holding their loved ones could they regain that pitiful sense of security.
"Mei Er, I want you to sleep with me... boo hoo." Well, did he want it or not?
—You are really wasting space; two rooms are empty.
Heavens... there is still a woman lying in the courtyard; aren’t you going to take care of her? Perhaps she was so scared that she became dazed; no one remembered that He Huan was still slumped in the courtyard. Sorry, He Huan, I was scared too and forgot about you; just stay in the courtyard tonight... sorry.
Ancient texts say: The soul of a person is good while the spirit is evil; the soul is spiritual while the spirit is foolish. When it first comes, a spirit does not perish, and the spirit attaches itself to the soul to act; when it departs, once the heart's matters are finished, the soul disperses and the spirit stagnates. If the soul remains, then it is that person; if the soul departs, then it is no longer that person. All movements of corpses and shadows in the world are done by the spirit, for those with knowledge can control the spirit.
At dawn the next day, Hibiscus and Xuan Dynasty both rose early to practice martial arts and discovered the woman in the courtyard. The dew was heavy, and He Huan's Azure Silk was already soaked through. At this moment, her complexion was pale and especially weak.
"Jin Zhi, what happened last night is not something for outsiders to discuss." Xuan Dynasty lifted his long robe and sat on that stone chair. "But what about this woman?"
Hibiscus gazed intently, "Have the servant send some silver with her to leave, and do not disturb us with trivial matters."
"Jin Zhi, are you afraid?" Xuan Dynasty had indeed spent a sleepless night, sitting in silence until dawn.
Hibiscus looked up at the sky and remained silent, "Ghostly Shadow, may I ask where one does not die? What does a long life guard? If one seeks immortality, where does life end? Are there immortals in this world?"
"Are you pondering why Miss Fengyin is not afraid of ghosts and gods?"
"After deep contemplation, it is unknowable and unattainable." Although Hibiscus said this, he thought to himself, "The men of the Mu Family must possess the women they desire, including their souls."
"The path divides into yin and yang; humans walk the yang path while ghosts walk the yin path. If humans walk the yin path, ghosts will then reverse and walk the human path. If a person walks the middle path of yin and yang, they will surely stumble within a hundred steps; it is merely a trick. Last night’s Ghostly Shadow was indeed frightening. Only those who have attained enlightenment can control spirits. It seems that the rumors in the martial world about Yun Zhongzi pursuing the Supreme Immortal Path are not without basis; Fengyin must have also received true teachings from her master." To seek immortality, where does life reach? Xuan Li could not help but believe in that ethereal immortal; having grown up in the deep palace, he had heard of many who died unjustly within its walls. Such cold and eerie spirits were not unfamiliar to him, yet due to his destiny and overwhelming aura, no ghost could approach him.
Having just stepped into the martial world, such strange occurrences had already arisen; this journey would likely be far from peaceful.
"Miss, this wind is as cool as water; how can you lie on the ground like this?" As Hibiscus whispered to Xuan Li, Mel stepped out of the room.
He had been tormented by evil spirits last night, and his complexion was still quite pale. He did not greet Hibiscus or Xuan Li but instead focused intently on He Huan lying on the ground. He bent down and picked up He Huan in his arms, his eyes vacant and devoid of spirit. The Mel who could once lose himself in a song now seemed utterly different.
Hibiscus and Xuan Li exchanged glances, feeling a chill run down their spines as they silently watched Mel carry He Huan into the room. Inside came the piercing scream of Spiritual Incense, "Mei Er, have you encountered evil? Ah!!!!" Spiritual Incense burst out of the door and saw Xuan Li standing still in the courtyard. "Brother," Spiritual Incense dashed barefoot into Xuan Li's embrace, trembling uncontrollably.
When had Mel become like this? She had shared a room with such a Mel last night; thinking back made Spiritual Incense shiver.
Early in the morning, Spiritual Incense's scream startled Jinse, who was still lying on her bed, causing her to tumble to the floor. She bumped her forehead against the edge of a shoe rack. "Ah! Blood!" Jinse exclaimed as she looked at the bloodstains on Cloud Sleeve.
"What happened?" Xuan Li pushed open the door and saw Jinse sitting on the floor with disheveled hair crying loudly. Could these women not cry so early in the morning?
"Blood!!!" Jinse turned around, perhaps from the impact, a large gash opened on her forehead. Wiping it with her sleeve, her small face was smeared with blood, looking somewhat disheveled and a bit ferocious. She cried, the blood mixing with her tears, her small face scrunched up, and at that moment, Spiritual Incense screamed and began to cry even louder.
Xuan Li's face darkened. "Shut up."
"I'll go find Fengyin to treat Jinse's wounds." Hibiscus stepped outside, the cries stirring his mind into chaos. Just as he exited Jinse's room, he saw Mel wandering foolishly outside Fengyin's door, constantly reaching out to peel away the sticky window paper.
"Brother Mei, the girl inside has woken up." Hibiscus reminded from behind Mel. Watching Mel turn to leave, he pondered for a moment before pushing the door open.
Fengyin lay on the bed as if asleep, her delicate skin exposed to the sunlight glimmering with a faint golden hue, eyes closed and brows furrowed.
"Fengyin? Wake up, Jinse is hurt; you need to bandage her." Hibiscus called several times but received no response.
"Fengyin?" Hibiscus reached out his hand but was brushed away by an invisible force before he could touch her. Gathering his energy and focus still yielded no results; it felt as if an invisible barrier separated them.
"Jin Zhi, why is it taking so long?" Xuan Li entered with Jinse, whose forehead was no longer bleeding.
"Fengyin is unconscious." Hibiscus pondered; this incident had occurred suddenly and everything felt too strange.
"Fengyin unconscious?" Xuan Dynasty squinted at the peacefully sleeping Fengyin on the couch, treating her as if she were merely in deep slumber. The bamboo fan in his hand lightly tapped against the elm table, his heart uneasy yet he spoke lightly, "Jinse bumped her head; it's quite lively this early in the morning. Jin Zhi, why don't you look for Fengyin's medicine box? I think she just got startled last night and is still asleep now."
The folding fan in Xuan Dynasty's hand was lacquered black with natural-colored edges and slightly thick. When closed, the upper part of the fan had sharp corners and straight lines while the lower part was smoother and more rounded. The transition between square and round was natural and fluid, making the fan appear light and elongated, suitable for grasping with fingers. The outer edge bore deep spiral patterns in dark colors grouped in threes, forming auspicious cloud designs that varied in size and density like the effect of Xiangfei bamboo. The fan's surface was pure white paper on one side sprinkled with gold for decoration; the irregular gold flakes resembled fallen leaves or light spots—free-spirited and abstract—possessing great charm. The golden spots contrasted beautifully with the golden glow on Fengyin's skin.
