At the moment when Liu You'er had completely given up, a pair of strong hands grasped her shoulders. These hands seemed to possess a soothing magic, prompting her to cautiously open her eyes. She saw a blurry figure squatting in front of her. Although she couldn't see clearly, she could sense that he was smiling at her. That smile was bright and sunny, instantly illuminating her world. Then, she fully opened her eyes and stared blankly at the person before her, only to hear him say, "Since we share the same plight and you just happened to save me, I’ll consider you my brother from now on. You have to protect me always!" 0

The cheerful voice and carefree tone made Liu You'er widen her eyes in disbelief as she reached out toward the figure in front of her, but only grasped at emptiness. The already blurry figure slowly faded away. 0

"Liu Yue!!!" 0

She let out a piercing scream, placing her hands on the ground as she struggled to stand up. She recalled the image of that young boy being kicked and beaten in the alley, remembered how he had silently followed her with a smile, saying it would be his turn to protect her, and thought of his joyful leaps on the basketball court... This gradually revived Liu You'er's heart as she murmured, "Yes, Liu Yue, Liu Yue! I can't die, I can't die... I must find a way to bring him back. I have already lost all my family; I can't lose him too!!! Absolutely not!!!" As her consciousness continued to awaken, a surge of power emerged in her mind, swiftly driving away the endless darkness. With a light sound echoing in her head, light was returned to Liu You'er. Although it felt like a century had passed, in reality, only about three seconds had gone by. She looked at the familiar figure not far away and smiled slightly, relieved to think: "Thank goodness I'm not dead," before fainting from exhaustion. 0

Meanwhile, Liu Yue was on the verge of success. He had initially growled excitedly but suddenly felt an overwhelming surge of mental power flood into his mind, breaking free from his own mental control and overwhelming him from within... 0

A City Survivor Base Conference Room 0

In a room of about 50 square meters, a long conference table was placed in the center. Around the table sat more than ten people who were intently watching the person on stage deliver a presentation. Their expressions varied while the speaker remained expressionless and spoke in a detached tone. Standing about 180 centimeters tall with a slender build and an upright posture, he wore a white lab coat exclusive to researchers. His features were not particularly striking but combined together gave off an indescribable elegance. His skin appeared somewhat pale as if he had been deprived of sunlight for years like a vampire; his eyes were like deep pools of water with no visible bottom. A pair of black-rimmed glasses perched on his high nose added to his sense of distance. His thin lips parted slightly, revealing a faint purple hue as he spoke in a cold voice with no inflection or variation. After finishing his presentation, he raised his bony left hand slightly and adjusted his glasses with his long middle finger before asking those below him, "Are there any questions?" 0

An elderly man dressed in military uniform who appeared to be over sixty but was still robust and spirited gritted his teeth and asked, "If being scratched or bitten by these infected individuals leads to infection and transformation into those monsters within five minutes to twenty-four hours, then that speed is terrifying! Do you know where the virus originated? Moreover, according to your research, these monsters can evolve through carnivorous behavior and some even exhibit various abilities! Does that mean humanity is doomed?" 0

The man on stage calmly looked at the elder and after listening to his words adjusted his glasses again to conceal the fleeting emotion in his eyes before replying lightly: "The specific origins of the virus require further research. Currently, while a small number of infected individuals can regain normal human speed and 5% pain sensation along with facial expressions when their carnivorous intake reaches a certain threshold—resulting in abilities—we refer to this as Stage One. However, prior to this stage, infected individuals have stiff limbs with no pain sensation or emotions and lack any memories from their previous lives; they act purely on instinct with about 20% greater strength than ordinary people without exhibiting any abilities. Additionally, there are gradually more ability users emerging among humans which indicates that humanity may also evolve through certain pathways. If we can discover this pathway, we will eventually be able to eliminate all infected individuals and return to our former world." 0

After hearing the man's words, there was silence for a second before discussions erupted among those present again. Five minutes later, a man dressed in a suit who appeared to be in his forties or fifties radiated an aura of authority as he furrowed his brows and asked: "Chuze, do you have confidence in developing an antibody for this virus?" 0

Chuze glanced at him without being affected by his imposing presence and calmly replied: "As no immune individuals have been discovered so far and there is no method for killing the virus within the body, the possibility of developing an antidote is nearly 1%." 0

Hearing this response, the audience fell into a dead silence. Even this biological genius, who had an IQ of 200 and obtained a Ph.D. in Biology from Harvard University at the age of 20, and had researched a vaccine for AIDS, stated that the possibility was only 1%. This indicated that the vaccine had almost no chance of being developed. Chuze looked at the pale faces in the audience, scanned the room, and asked indifferently, "Are there any more questions?" A minute later, no one answered, so he calmly said, "Then, this meeting is concluded." 0

Then, carrying his materials, he walked out with a measured pace, leaving behind a crowd burdened with heavy hearts. 0

Outside the supermarket 0

The sky was pitch black, and the moonlight shone on Liu You'er, draping her in a layer of silver gauze, making her look extraordinarily beautiful like a fairy. She slowly opened her eyes, feeling a splitting headache. She couldn't help but rub her forehead when suddenly she heard a male voice in her mind: "Master, what's wrong? Are you feeling unwell?" 0

Liu You'er was taken aback and looked beside her, only to see all the Zombies standing five meters away from her, not daring to approach. She thought to herself, "Am I hallucinating? Seeing things?" At that moment, the previous voice echoed in her mind again, asking nervously, "Master, are you hungry?" Then, a pale hand appeared before Liu You'er from behind, holding a bloody arm that had been forcibly torn from someone... 0
