During the break, several students walked into the quiet library, slowly weaving between the rows of bookshelves in search of the books they wanted.
"Ah, this book is upside down."
"Wait, it's better not to touch it randomly."
"Huh?" Xiaoyao's hand froze in mid-air as she looked at the person beside her with a puzzled expression. "Why?"
"Haven't you heard? Upside-down things are used to ward off evil, so it's better not to deliberately set them right."
"That's just superstition," Xiaoyao replied dismissively. "Besides, this library doesn't have any supernatural rumors; where would all those demons and monsters come from that need to be suppressed? It's simply that someone put the book back incorrectly; you're overthinking it."
"Exactly because it's a library that there's a greater need for suppression..."
"Huh? Why?" Xiaoyao couldn't help but ask out of curiosity.
Although libraries are indeed popular spots for supernatural events, she had never heard of any terrifying rumors about this school library.
Or could it be... there was something she didn't know?
"Because it's filled with books!" The person said as if it were obvious. "You see, every book carries a strong intention behind its content in order to be written. When a bunch of strong intentions gather together, over time they can turn into 'pollution' and cause chaos..."
"...Classmate, you're overthinking it," Xiaoyao interrupted her unfinished sentence in disbelief.
"Tsk, she thought she could hear some interesting supernatural stories to share with her friends, what a waste!"
"The library only has books; the real concern should be accidents like fires," she said.
As she was about to pull out the book and set it straight, the person beside her reached out and pressed it back into place.
"Hey! What are you doing?" Xiao Yao glared at her in annoyance.
"You should know that when a book is placed upside down, it's usually due to the actions of the person borrowing it. However, it also indicates that a certain obsession within that book has become 'polluted,' causing someone to instinctively do this in order to suppress the 'pollution' that stirs within the book. If you carelessly set it right, the 'pollution' will escape from the book's confinement and wreak havoc in the real world," the person explained.
Xiao Yao couldn't help but roll her eyes. What kind of modern urban legend setting was this?
"So according to you, does that mean all upside-down books can never be set right again?"
"No, it means that in order to set them right again, you must follow the correct steps." The person slightly curled her lips and spoke mysteriously, "Once you pull a turned book off the shelf, you cannot immediately return it. Instead, you must read through its contents completely before putting it back. Only then can you eliminate the 'pollution' hidden within that book."
"Oh, so it's like forced promotion?" Xiao Yao chuckled as she withdrew her hand, abandoning the idea of straightening the book. "Fine, suit yourself; I'm just not interested." She had no interest in either the book in her hands or what this person was saying.
Tsk! She just wanted to straighten the book out of kindness and ended up having to listen to a bunch of strange theories; it was simply ridiculous!
During lunch break, Xiao Yao casually mentioned her strange encounter at the library while exchanging lunch dishes with her friend Xiao Yi.
"Ah? That person must be too bored after eating, right? Is she a librarian?" Xiao Yi said, looking somewhat stunned.
"No, I haven't seen that person before; she shouldn't be a librarian..." Xiao Yao thought for a moment but couldn't recall what the person looked like.
Xiao Yao was a regular at the library and had encountered several librarians on duty. If the person were a librarian, there was no reason for her not to recognize her.
"Do you remember her face? Which class is she from?" Xiao Yi asked.
"Um... I can't remember. Anyway, I don't know her," Xiao Yao gave up trying to recall and decided to focus back on her lunch.
"How can there be such a strange person... She must watch too many middle school anime!"
"No, it has nothing to do with anime; it's purely that person's own problem. Please don't casually slander anime," Xiao Yao retorted dismissively.
"Ah, are you going to the library after school? I'll go with you to see if we run into that weird person again," Xiao Yi excitedly suggested.
Such a unique experience wasn't something one came across every day; she wanted to satisfy her curiosity no matter what!
"Oh, sure! I happen to have a book to return, so let's go together!"
