I stood there in a daze, my eyes filled with the image of Gewa protecting the Silver Moon. Although I had often said that I wanted to protect everyone, more often than not, I was the one being protected. Seeing Gewa made me realize that what I had done was far from enough.
Faintly, the melody of A Dream of the Bright Moon echoed in my ears. As I gradually regained my senses, I realized that I had been playing this tune all along, and my face was stained with tears that I didn't know when I had shed.
Staring blankly at Gewa in front of me, the Bone Flute in my hand slipped and fell to the ground, producing a crisp sound.
For a moment, I didn't know how to face Gewa; at least, I no longer felt resistance.
"You've won, human." Gewa no longer exhibited the intense fighting spirit from before; instead, he appeared somewhat dejected.
I didn't know what to say. The glimpses of the past indicated that Gewa somewhat acknowledged me; otherwise, I wouldn't be standing here like this.
"I can no longer protect His Highness." The tall man suddenly uttered this statement, sounding helpless and somewhat desolate.
"Gewa, you are strong; I will never be able to surpass you." I sighed and said.
"No, you must surpass me!" Gewa insisted firmly.
"Please protect His Highness in my stead!" As he spoke, Gewa stubbornly knelt before me, just as he had knelt before the Silver Moon back then, so sincere.
"I will, Gewa. However, you are irreplaceable in the heart of the Moon." I walked up to Gewa and helped him up.
"I know His Highness's fate—"
"Gewa, I promise you that I will guard him." It was guarding, not merely protecting.
"Your Highness..." Gewa choked on his words.
"You all should leave now." With that, Gewa released White Soul and Mosang.
White Soul quickly came to my side and murmured, "Water Spell, Judgment Power: Restoration."
The wounds healed quickly; it turned out I had forgotten about the pain.
"White Soul," I called out.
"En?" White Soul carefully tended to the wound, responding instinctively.
"Not just Silver Moon, but also you all—Wild Ghost, Against Heaven, Mosang, everyone around me—I will protect each of you until the end," I said.
White Soul was taken aback, looking up at me and nodding with a smile. How could I not see the bitterness in his eyes? Perhaps he already knew his ultimate fate.
"It's really unfair. You all know what will happen in the future, while I know nothing," I joked, but unfortunately, I couldn't smile.
"Heh heh, silly. We don't want you to know; it's to protect you," White Soul replied with a laugh.
"In the future, don't protect me anymore. Really."
"Don't think too much; it's our responsibility," White Soul said as he lowered his head to continue tending to the wound. In fact, the wound had healed quite a bit; he was probably just trying to cover it up.
"Sorry, woman. I couldn't help you this time," Mosang said awkwardly from the side. I understood the reason now; it was because of this.
"Heh heh, what are you talking about? You've helped me a lot."
"I won't be able to next time." With that, Mosang hurriedly disappeared.
"White Soul, will I definitely find Moon?" I asked somewhat confused.
"You will. You definitely will." With White Soul's reassuring answer again, my heart relaxed a little.
"Xi Meng, the road ahead will be even harder, but I will be with you."
"En." I smiled.
...
"Human, can you play that tune again?" Gewa said from not far away. All I could see was his departing figure.
"Of course."
Taking out the Bone Flute, I played A Dream of the Bright Moon once more and suddenly realized it had become much deeper. If Silver Moon could hear it, how wonderful that would be.
The beautiful sound seemed to tell a story—a story that belonged to us, a story without an ending.
Gewa could not bear to stay there any longer and ultimately made up his mind to leave with determined strides.
"Your Highness, I finally understand your choice now. Please hold on until the end."
"Without Your Highness, Gewa would only be that abandoned child from before, meeting his end at the hands of a beast. No matter what I do, I can never repay you."
"So, my dearest Your Highness, Gewa still feels regret. Why can't I live on? It's not out of fear of death, but because I cannot continue to protect you."
"Your Highness, that human said she would guard you, so Gewa has found peace now. It is time to leave. I do not wish to become Undead in the end, so I want to choose my fate anew."
"Your Highness, if possible, I will protect you again."
"Your Highness, you have chosen the bravest girl in the three realms."
...
As the song ended, only I and White Soul remained; Gewa's figure had long since vanished.
But I will always remember that man named Gewa.
Moon, if I can protect you, I hope you will never be harmed again.
