“Nine Charm, where are you going next?” I asked as I walked.
It was a bit strange for Nine Charm. Wasn't he supposed to go to the Demon Abyss? How did he end up here? I was no longer in any danger, and he hadn't mentioned leaving. It wasn't that I was overly suspicious; ever since I learned about the mark, it had been difficult for me to trust Nine Charm as I once did.
“I’m not leaving. Can I stay by your side?” Nine Charm smiled gently, showing no signs of deceit.
“Why?” I frowned and asked. Perhaps my wariness was too strong, as Nine Charm seemed taken aback.
“What, do you want me to leave?”
I chose to remain silent. I didn’t know why, but I felt very restless inside and didn’t consider whether my actions were hurting Nine Charm.
“I understand. I’ll leave soon,” Nine Charm said softly from behind me.
I couldn’t help but glance back at him and found that Nine Charm looked profound at that moment, his sharp gaze fixed on me as if trying to see through me or looking past me at someone else.
Everyone's expressions were grim along the way. Silver Moon seemed troubled by what Nine Charm had said, while Zhen'er showed despair but stayed close behind Silver Moon. White Soul's beautiful eyes radiated discontent.
As we entered the villagers' living area, there was no sign of anyone. The streets were even colder than usual. But hadn’t Mosang said they had been returned?
Speaking of Mosang, ever since forming a contract with me, he had kept himself sealed within my body. Unless I made a conscious effort to connect with him, he wouldn’t make a sound, and I had no idea what he was planning.
Just as we were about to reach the Bai Residence, a group of people suddenly blocked our view. These must be the villagers that Mosang had returned.
"Look, the Goddess and Divine Child have arrived!" Someone in the crowd shouted.
Immediately, the crowd parted into two sections, leaving a pathway in the middle. A middle-aged man at the forefront bowed respectfully, seemingly wanting to say something to us, but White Soul walked past him without a glance.
"Wait, Divine Child!" The middle-aged man, undeterred by embarrassment, hurriedly caught up with White Soul and stood in front of him.
Everyone stopped in their tracks; I was curious to see how this farce would unfold. Divine Child? Where had the Cursed Child, whom everyone had tried to eliminate, gone?!
"We want to thank Lord Shinko for saving us. Previously, we were not your equals; please spare us from Lord Shinko's wrath!"
Upon hearing this, White Soul finally reacted, but with a disdainful smile. His amber eyes sparkled with captivating colors as he slightly curled his lips and said, "Forgive you? Sure, go die."
The crowd fell silent instantly. The middle-aged man was awkwardly at a loss for words, unsure whether to leave or stay.
"White Soul, don't go too far; they are your elders!"
From the other side of the crowd, the butler was helping White Clan Leader slowly approach us, followed by Bai Zhan. Bai Zhan seemed somewhat different; he appeared more composed and nodded lightly when looking at us.
I also gave a slight nod; Bai Zhan was one of the few people I didn't find unpleasant here.
"Heh, have you ever considered me one of your kin?" White Soul said, his eyes filled with uncontainable sorrow.
"Soul—"
"Enough! I will leave this place soon, just as you wish!"
"No! Lord Shinko, who will protect the Holy Spirit Village if you go?!" The middle-aged man strongly opposed.
"What do your lives have to do with me?"
"Chief, please persuade Lord Shinko! He can't abandon us!" The middle-aged man turned to kneel before the White Clan Leader, not giving White Soul any face.
"Let him go. If he wants to leave, then let him get far away and never come back!" the White Clan Leader said angrily.
"Father." Bai Zhan softly called out, seeming to disagree with the White Clan Leader's attitude.
The atmosphere became tense, with neither side willing to back down. I walked over to White Soul and smiled at him; we are family, and no one would be left out. He might have sensed my thoughts and nodded with a smile.
"Enough! Are you done making a scene?! I am truly fed up!" A sharp female voice cried out in anguish; it was unexpectedly Zhen'er.
"Put away your hypocritical faces! Didn't you all hate my Brother Four back then? Why are you shamelessly asking him to stay now?! Mother once said that this place is good but also terrifying because none of you have an ounce of emotion. If it weren't for Mother's deep love for Father and us, she wouldn't have stayed here at all!"
"In a place like this, not even Brother Four can stand it! I feel no different from those low-level magical beasts; I am even worse off than they are!"
Zhen'er cried out loudly, sitting on the ground without any dignity. I genuinely felt some sympathy for her.
Her mother must have been a vibrant and wise woman, and growing up beside her would have undoubtedly influenced Zhen'er. However, with her mother's passing, she felt like a puppet being manipulated here, and even when she finally encountered love, she received no response. Clearly, she was a girl who deserved to enjoy happiness.
“White Clan Leader, please allow me to say a few words,” I said.
White Clan Leader nodded solemnly.
“A calamity is about to emerge in the Three Realms, and our gathering is to prevent this disaster. Perhaps with our abilities, it is impossible to stop it; perhaps we will perish before it arrives. However, for the sake of protecting those we love most and cherishing everything we hold dear, we are willing to fight to the death, even if it means sacrificing everything. In truth, none of us are brave; what has kept us going until now is merely a belief. I have it, Silver Moon has it, Wild Ghost has it, and Defiance has it; White Soul must have it too. So, if possible, please do not force White Soul any further; he is just trying to protect everyone in his own way.”
I clearly saw the glimmer in White Soul's eyes, reminiscent of the tear I had seen fall from the young boy under the tree that day—a poignant image that left a deep impression on me. No matter what, we are friends.
“Everyone disperse,” White Clan Leader finally said after a long pause.
The villagers felt somewhat suppressed and slowly began to leave. I let out a deep breath.
“White Clan Leader, if the atmosphere in Holy Spirit Village does not change soon, this place will eventually be destroyed.”
White Clan Leader did not respond and turned to walk into Bai Residence, simply saying, “Let’s go home.”
Going home… how nice.
We followed the clan leader into Bai Residence. Suddenly, I remembered Nine Charm's presence; after searching for a while, I could not find him. When did he leave? He must be feeling sad.
Silver Moon walked at the back, holding the exhausted Zhen'er. I awkwardly withdrew my gaze and stepped into Bai Residence.
