Wen Yifan sat in Duan Jiaxu's car, remaining silent throughout the ride.
"What are you thinking about so intently?" Duan Jiaxu kept his eyes on the road, driving with a gentle tone. "Did that kid Sang Yan bully you?"
"No," Wen Yifan shook her head, turning her gaze to the window. The street scenery rushed by, but nothing truly caught her eye.
Duan Jiaxu parked in front of an elegant Western restaurant. Wen Yifan followed him inside and sat down at a table by the window.
"What do you want to eat?" Duan Jiaxu handed her the menu.
"Anything is fine," Wen Yifan replied, taking the menu but not looking through it; her mind was completely elsewhere.
Duan Jiaxu ordered several dishes that Wen Yifan liked, then set the menu down and looked at her with a hint of regret in his eyes. "Yifan, there's something I've wanted to clarify with you."
Wen Yifan raised her head, looking at him in confusion.
"Seven years ago, it was me who asked Yining to stop you from being with Sang Yan," Duan Jiaxu said heavily.
"What?" Wen Yifan stared at him in shock, the menu slipping from her hands and landing on the table with a thud. She couldn't believe that her brother had done such a thing behind her back.
"Back then, I was young and naive, mistakenly thinking that keeping Sang Yan away from you would protect you," Duan Jiaxu's voice was filled with guilt. "I thought that if I broke you two apart, I could shield you, but I ended up hurting you instead."
"Why... did you do that? You clearly knew..." Wen Yifan's voice trembled as she struggled to understand why her brother would treat her and Sang Yan this way.
"The events of that year are complicated," Duan Jiaxu hesitated. He knew he owed Wen Yifan an explanation, but some things were hard for him to express. "If you want to know the truth, go ask Sang Yan."
Wen Yifan took a deep breath, trying to calm the turmoil within her. She looked at Duan Jiaxu, her tone carrying a hint of pleading. "Brother Jiaxu, can you take me to see Sang Yan?"
Duan Jiaxu nodded. He knew that some things needed both of them to face and resolve personally.
An hour later, Wen Yifan met Sang Yan at the "Old Friends Return" bar.
The bar was not crowded. Under the dim lights, Sang Yan sat alone at the bar, drinking quietly. He heard footsteps, looked up, and saw Wen Yifan. A flicker of surprise crossed his eyes, but he quickly regained his composure.
"You came," Sang Yan said lightly, his tone revealing no emotion.
Wen Yifan sat down beside him, observing this familiar yet unfamiliar man. Seven years had passed; he had shed the naivety of youth and gained a more mature charm, yet that deep affection remained unchanged.
"Sang Yan, I want to know what happened seven years ago," Wen Yifan said directly. She didn't want to waste any more time; she needed an answer.
Sang Yan fell silent for a moment, downed his drink, then looked at Wen Yifan and slowly spoke, a hint of bitterness in his voice: "Seven years ago, I wrote you a love letter, but your brother saw it."
"A love letter?" Wen Yifan was taken aback; she had no memory of it.
"Yes. That day after you left school, I mustered the courage to put the letter in your backpack, but..." Sang Yan paused, a flash of pain crossing his eyes. "The next day, your brother found me. He warned me to stay away from you and said..."
"Said what?" Wen Yifan's heart raced involuntarily. She had a vague feeling that what he was about to say would unravel years of confusion in her heart.
"He said you didn't like me and told me not to pursue you anymore." Sang Yan's voice was low, as if he were recounting something extremely cruel.
"Impossible!" Wen Yifan almost blurted out. How could she have said such a thing?
"I know you don't believe it, but..." Sang Yan took out a yellowed envelope from his pocket and handed it to Wen Yifan. "This is what your brother asked me to pass on to you."
Wen Yifan trembled as she took the envelope and opened it. Inside was indeed a letter she had written to Sang Yan. The content was very brief, just a few words: Sang Yan, I don't like you.
A loud bang echoed in Wen Yifan's mind as if something had exploded. She finally understood what had happened seven years ago.
"This isn't written by me!" Wen Yifan suddenly stood up, her emotions running high as she said, "I have never written this letter!"
"I know," Sang Yan also stood up and walked in front of her, gently pulling her into an embrace. "I believe you."
Wen Yifan held Sang Yan tightly, tears streaming down her face, all the grievances, sadness, and guilt that had been suppressed in her heart for seven years were released at that moment.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry..." Wen Yifan kept apologizing, unsure of how to express her feelings at that moment.
"Fool, it's not your fault," Sang Yan gently patted her back, soothing her softly. "It's all in the past. Let's start over, okay?"
Wen Yifan lifted her head, looking at Sang Yan with tear-filled eyes, and nodded.
Sang Yan lowered his head and tenderly kissed away the tears on her face before holding her tightly, as if he wanted to merge her into his very being.
Outside the window, the setting sun painted the sky a golden hue, illuminating their hearts for each other.
