Year Twelve of Yongzhao, April, light rain.
"Recently, it has been raining in the town. You shouldn't go out to play anymore. Come home with me."
"I know, stop pulling my ear, Mother."
Silently watching the mother and son leave, the beggar squatting in the corner lowered his head again.
The weather had been bad these days, with continuous rain causing the water levels to rise significantly. The place where Lin Jingyu was hiding had also changed frequently.
Unable to beg for food and with such harsh weather, many beggars around had died, and right beside Lin Jingyu lay a corpse.
"Aren't you afraid?"
A gentle voice suddenly sounded beside him.
Hearing the voice, Lin Jingyu looked up.
He saw a White-Clad Cultivator, with a face like white jade and an appearance resembling a celestial being, standing in front of Lin Jingyu, looking at him with a questioning expression.
The person before him had an extraordinary demeanor, prompting Lin Jingyu to glance at him a few more times.
Then Lin Jingyu reacted, slowly turning to look at the corpse not far away before coldly replying, "I can't even fill my stomach; why should I care about others?"
Recently, there had been many corpses among the beggars here. Many passing immortals were aware of this but mostly just asked a few questions before leaving without getting involved further.
Lin Jingyu treated this immortal as he did others and did not take it to heart.
Sure enough, the immortal merely frowned slightly and exchanged a few glances with Lin Jingyu before turning to leave.
Lin Jingyu huddled in this only spot not drenched by rain, silently curling up to hold onto the last bit of warmth.
Lin Jingyu did not know how much longer he could hold on; perhaps soon he would end up like the corpse beside him, collapsing here and ultimately being discarded on a desolate mountain.
Lin Jingyu closed his eyes and leaned his head against the wall.
"There is only one bun shop still open here. I bought a few for you to eat first."
The aroma at the tip of his nose stimulated Lin Jingyu to open his eyes, and he looked at the person in front of him with confusion.
How did this person come back?
Lin Jingyu stared at Xu Yourong for a moment but quickly shifted his gaze to the buns in Xu Yourong's outstretched hand.
He looked at the buns and then at Xu Yourong's smiling face, but he did not reach out.
Seeing this, Xu Yourong stepped forward, knelt on one knee, and offered the buns closer.
The white clothing was stained with dirt from the water surface, leaving small black spots.
Looking at the buns so close, it seemed that Lin Jingyu had made some kind of decision. He took the buns from Xu Yourong's hand with both hands and began to devour them hungrily.
Xu Yourong said nothing, quietly standing by and waiting for Lin Jingyu to finish eating.
"Thank you, immortal." After finishing, Lin Jingyu stood up shakily and bowed in gratitude to Xu Yourong.
"No need to thank me." Xu Yourong reached out to steady Lin Jingyu.
Noticing that the hem of the immortal's clothing had already picked up dirt from the ground and now there were black smudges on his sleeves as well, Lin Jingyu quickly stepped back to create distance between them.
Lin Jingyu's clothes were unrecognizable in color, though tattered they covered his entire body. His hair was disheveled, and his face was unrecognizable, with only a pair of pitch-black eyes resembling a starry night.
Xu Yourong looked Lin Jingyu up and down, a slight smile tugging at her lips. "You don't look like a beggar. How did you end up in such a state?"
Lin Jingyu lowered his gaze and slowly replied, "I was the eldest son in my family. My mother passed away shortly after giving birth to me. My father remarried and had two more sons. My stepmother feared I would take her inheritance and has always been dissatisfied with me. Recently, due to the flood disaster in Tianshui Town that caused many casualties, she incited my father to listen to a sorcerer's slander and drove me out of the house."
After hearing this account, Xu Yourong appeared puzzled. "Why would your father blame you for the casualties in Tianshui Town and expel you from home?"
Lin Jingyu's eyes darkened as he calmly said, "My mother was a demon. She died giving birth to me, so I have been regarded as an ill omen since childhood. My father never treated me well either."
Xu Yourong remained unfazed, showing no reaction even upon hearing that the person before him was a half-demon.
Lin Jingyu continued, "Since three months ago, it has been raining intermittently in Tianshui Town, causing the water levels to rise and resulting in countless deaths in nearby towns. It was during this time that my stepmother invited a Taoist priest, claiming that my misfortune had brought about this disaster. My father believed her and drove me away."
Xu Yourong was puzzled. "How can there be such heartless parents in this world? The recent continuous rain in Tianshui Town is clearly the work of a rain demon; what does it have to do with you? Come with me, and I will take you to confront your father and seek justice for you."
With that, Xu Yourong moved closer to Lin Jingyu and grabbed his arm, intending for him to lead the way.
Lin Jingyu, startled, gently pushed Xu Yourong's hand away. "Thank you for your kindness, Immortal Lord, but I no longer wish to return to that home."
Xu Yourong released his hand and was momentarily stunned by Lin Jingyu's words. "What do you mean? Are you planning to wander the world?"
Lin Jingyu smiled bitterly. "To be free and unrestrained under the heavens is indeed what I desire, but if I say it now, I fear it will only make you laugh at me."
Xu Yourong replied calmly, "How could I? Since you do not wish to go back, then come with me to Cloud Mountain Sect."
The disheveled hair could not hide his tear-like eyes, deep as ink, gazing at Xu Yourong. Feeling slightly awkward, Xu Yourong coughed lightly.
After a long moment of silence, Lin Jingyu finally nodded, his voice extremely faint.
"Alright."
