"Engagement ring." Saratoga was taken aback.
She wasn't particularly interested in the ring, nor did she want to marry Dudu's father. It was just that she suddenly thought of the ring that Admiral had given her sister, Lexington, which seemed to be made of glass!
However, her stingy sister never allowed her to touch the ring. Aside from the time right after she received it, the rest of the time she kept it hidden away, not showing it to anyone, so Saratoga had no way of judging its authenticity.
But then again, as long as it was a gift from her brother-in-law, she would have liked it even if it were a plastic ring. Yet, she never got her wish.
When the young man saw Saratoga's reaction, he initially felt pleased but then couldn't help but feel a bit contemptuous towards her.
The young man's name was Gu Jian Tao. He was a local from Shun'an County, and his family's situation was quite ordinary during his parents' generation; they were part of the working class. After graduating from Tongcheng University and returning to his hometown, he declined an invitation from the county government and ventured into business on his own. After nearly eight years of hard work, he turned a trading company with a registered capital of less than one hundred thousand into a comprehensive trade company valued at nearly ten million. In Shun'an County, he had become one of the prominent figures.
For someone like him, the death of his wife would normally be seen as a fortunate event. There is a saying that life has three great fortunes: promotion, wealth, and a deceased wife. He hadn't been promoted, but due to his company's success, he was often a guest of county government leaders, which gave him a status that ordinary people couldn't compare to. As for wealth, with a company worth millions, Gu Jian Tao's personal fortune was certainly substantial. And since his wife had indeed passed away, finding a young and beautiful new wife would surely be better than sticking with his original spouse; how wonderful life could be!
In such situations, most people would think this way and act accordingly. However, Gu Jian Tao was indeed a sentimental person. After his wife's death, he raised their young daughter alone and never considered remarrying. It wasn't until more than two years ago when he happened to meet Saratoga while picking up his daughter from kindergarten that something in him was stirred.
But Gu Jian Tao was quite proud and arrogant; to put it bluntly, he was conceited. In his eyes, if a woman only had good looks without matching character traits, she was merely an ornamental vase unworthy of him.
Thus far, Gu Jian Tao had not pursued Saratoga but had been quietly observing her character. It wasn't until six months ago when he confirmed that Saratoga was genuine and not swayed by money—an upright girl—that he decided to pursue her. However, aside from buying an engagement ring, he had made no further gestures.
There was no way around it; this guy could be considered a peculiar character. Ever since he became successful, he had developed an almost pathological level of arrogance. He believed that as a successful person with good looks, girls should be the ones pursuing him; they didn't have any qualifications to warrant his pursuit, not even Saratoga. So, he simply dismissed his former nanny and took on the responsibility of picking up his daughter from kindergarten every day, all in hopes of giving Saratoga a chance to chase after him.
At that moment, looking at Saratoga who was staring blankly at the ring, Gu Jian Tao frowned slightly, and his impression of her dropped significantly. He had thought she was high-minded, but it turned out to be an act; she was no different from those gold-digging women. However, it didn't matter much since his daughter liked her! He would reluctantly marry her, considering it as finding a mother for his daughter.
"Take the ring," said Gu Jian Tao, presenting the ring to Saratoga. "From this moment on, you are Dudu's mother and my wife. Don't worry; your family won't miss out on the bride price. Now come home with me to celebrate Dudu's birthday."
"Could you repeat that? I didn't hear you clearly." Saratoga looked at Gu Jian Tao as if he were insane; she felt like hitting him.
"I mean, from now on, you are my wife. Put away that ignorant expression. Do you see this diamond ring? It has a three-carat diamond worth over 200,000. So you don't have to worry about me skimping on your family's bride price. Additionally, after we get married, I will give you another million. That should satisfy you! So please come home with me now and fulfill your duties as a mother by celebrating Dudu's birthday."
Gu Jian Tao spoke without a hint of emotion, wearing an extremely arrogant expression. In his mind, the other party was just a kindergarten teacher earning a meager salary, likely from the countryside and surely poor. How could she possibly resist such financial temptation?
"Oh no," little Dudu covered her eyes, unable to bear watching any longer. How could her dad be so clueless? Would he really be able to win over the teacher like this? It seemed he was destined to be single for life.
But after all, he was her dad, and she wanted the teacher to be her mom. So before Saratoga could explode in anger, Dudu hurriedly stood between them and looked at Saratoga with pleading eyes. "Teacher, please don't be angry; Dad is always like this; he's actually a really nice person..."
"Be good and listen to your teacher; get in the car first. I'm not angry; I just want to talk to your dad privately."
If it weren't for Dudu being there, Saratoga would have either taught Gu Jian Tao a lesson or stormed off by now.
Once the little girl got into the car and closed the door, Saratoga took another look at Gu Jian Tao, suppressing her urge to hit him. "Mr. Gu, I think you've misunderstood. I never intended to date you, let alone become Dudu's mother."
"I'm sorry, Miss Lin, I take back what I said earlier." Seeing that Saratoga's actions did not seem fake, Gu Jian Tao retracted his dismissive attitude and said earnestly: "I have never taken back something I offered, so I hope you can give me a chance to pursue you."
"Don't even think about it," Saratoga firmly refused.
Almost at the same time, a powerful-looking SUV stopped by the roadside in front of the kindergarten. As the car door opened, a figure stepped out that felt both unfamiliar and familiar to Saratoga.
"Brother-in-law!!!"
