"Is it you? Did you come to find me for something?" Yezhi was filled with confusion. How did Sun Dajiang find his way here?
Sun Dajiang smiled a bit foolishly, "I went to your village to look for you. Aunt Zhou said you came to the county to study, so I stopped by to see you while I was in town for some errands."
Zhang Ling looked at Sun Dajiang with curiosity, feeling that he was not worthy of her Sister Ye at all.
Yezhi smiled a bit awkwardly. They had only met a few times; could it be that Sun Dajiang really had feelings for her and came all the way to the city just for her? Indeed, she must be quite charming, loved by everyone.
Sun Dajiang handed Yezhi a bag of Sugar Balls and a pack of Sweet Rice Sticks that he bought from the Department Store. Yezhi didn't want to accept them, and they ended up pushing each other back and forth at the entrance.
"Yezhi, this is your boyfriend!" Lu Xiaoli, who had just walked out of the classroom, looked at them with disdain. This country girl had quite a messy relationship; she was flirting with the County Party Secretary's son while still hanging around with a rural guy. How scandalous!
Sun Dajiang's eyes lit up with gratitude towards the beautiful girl who interrupted them. Originally, he planned to give up since Yezhi already had someone, but recently news spread throughout the Commune that Zhoujiatun sold 60,000 jin of rice. He couldn't just give up such a good opportunity; besides, he genuinely liked Yezhi. As long as she wasn't married, he still had a chance.
"Lu Xiaoli, what does it have to do with you? Young girls should act like young girls and stop meddling in other people's business," Yezhi said irritably. She then turned to Sun Dajiang and said, "Comrade Dajiang, I can't accept your things. I'm very grateful that you came to see me."
Sun Dajiang smiled and said flatteringly, "Yezhi, I specifically bought these for you. Just accept them." Yezhi was afraid of the word "specifically." She wasn't so vain as to be swayed by someone pursuing her; since she had no interest in Sun Dajiang, she didn't want to give him any false hope.
"What's wrong with you? My sister has already said no, yet you're still insisting," Zhang Ling said, standing in front of Yezhi with her hands on her hips.
Lu Xiaoli laughed mockingly, "Coming from the countryside, don't bother trying. She's now flirting with the County Party Secretary's son; how would she care about you!"
"Lu Xiaoli, watch your mouth," Yezhi was truly angry now. Lu Xiaoli wasn't her client; did she really have to endure this?
"You’re cursing!"
"What's wrong with scolding you? You brought it on yourself," Yezhi replied arrogantly.
"You... you..." Lu Xiaoli, who had a good upbringing, pointed at Yezhi but couldn't come up with a curse after a long time. Qian Jiazhen played the peacemaker beside them, saying, "Alright, let's not argue. Each of you take a step back." Yezhi huffed, her mind racing with various insults she had seen online and in life, while Sun Dajiang, who looked bewildered, decided to retreat and gave up on pursuing her.
"Lu Xiaoli, you're just like a cucumber, asking for a slap! If I hear you gossiping again!" Yezhi waved her right fist. Zhang Ling watched Lu Xiaoli's face turn red with anger and stifled a laugh.
Yezhi stole a glance at Sun Dajiang; that was enough. She didn't want to completely ruin the little girl's spirit. She had plenty of insults more substantial than cucumbers in her mind, but it was tiring to filter them for someone so innocent. "Comrade Dajiang, I have things to do, so I'm leaving. Thanks for coming to see me. Goodbye!" With that, Yezhi pulled the giggling Zhang Ling along and jogged away.
Ever since their argument at the Education Committee entrance, things had officially soured between her and Lu Xiaoli. The girl now often mocked her and tried hard to rally their classmates against her, spreading quite a bit of bad talk but never daring to say it to her face. Zhang Ling was furious and repeatedly explained to their classmates, while Yezhi remained calm and didn't impulsively hit anyone; she simply said a very cliché phrase: "Rumors stop with the wise."
"Sister Ye, why aren't you angry?" After school, Zhang Ling yelled while holding Cilou Dog on their way back to Lin's house. Niu Niu barked in protest: "She's so noisy; I don't want to play with her!"
Yezhi was trying to focus on cooking when Zhang Ling's noise distracted her. "Sister, I'm cooking! Can you please be quiet?" Today she had finally managed to get four pig kidneys; eating them in sesame oil during winter was very nourishing. Just as Zhang Ling called out "Sister Ye," she was silenced by a piece of tender kidney that exuded a rich sesame oil aroma. Chewing while exhaling steam, Zhang Ling said, "Sister Ye, your cooking is really good."
"What smells so good?" Zhang Dou pushed his bicycle to Lin Haitao and dashed into the kitchen.
"Work's done!" Yezhi picked up a piece of kidney and stuffed it into the mouth of the hungry Zhang Dou, who savored its tenderness without replying.
When Niu Niu saw Lin Haitao return, it wriggled free from Zhang Ling's embrace and jumped onto Lin Haitao's head to cause trouble. With messy hair and an exasperated look, Lin Haitao grabbed Niu Niu, making Yezhi chuckle while Zhang Ling and Zhang Dou laughed so hard they started coughing.
"Yezi, take care of your cow!" Lin Haitao said angrily as he tossed Niu Niu back to Yezhi. She laughed so hard her stomach hurt while rubbing Niu Niu, who proudly barked at its owner.
After shooing the three out of the kitchen, Yezhi made a wild vegetable steamed egg dish, potato and green bean stew with vermicelli, and spicy shredded radish. The four of them finished all four dishes in no time; Zhang Dou even soaked up the remaining broth from the sesame oil kidneys with rice. After dinner, Yezhi and Zhang Ling did their homework at the kang table while leaving the tidying up of the table and kitchen to the two gentlemen.
Once they finished their homework and sent off the Zhang siblings, Yezhi returned to her room to play with Niu Niu. Their laughter echoed like silver bells in the small courtyard while Lin Haitao wrote reports under the desk lamp, unable to help but smile.
"Master, it's time to go!" Xiao Fang's reminder made Yezhi release Niu Niu from her arms. After telling it to play by itself, she closed her eyes and logged into her consciousness.
"Let's go!" Yezhi and Xiao Fang stepped onto the light bridge and arrived at Cosmic Mall. Today was the day for the second-hand market, and Yezhi had reminded Xiao Fang about it long ago.
Yezhi and Xiao Fang reached the bustling second-hand market, where various aliens overwhelmed Yezhi's senses. The stalls were filled with a dazzling array of goods, and squeezing in didn't guarantee they would get anything, which left Yezhi feeling frustrated. She thought she would excel at grabbing food, but as expected, life was all about continuous practice.
"Master, there's warm clothing over there." Xiao Fang pointed to a giant's stall, and Yezhi excitedly ran over, crawling between the legs of two giant customers.
Isn't that down jacket worn by a Barbie doll? "Master, this is made of velvet; it's light and warm," Yezhi thought Wolf Child would look great in it.
"How much for this clothing?" Unable to see the vendor's face clearly, she only noticed the Giant Vendor's large mouth moving up and down. "Not selling separately, only selling toys, 100,000 tons, no bargaining."
Xiao Fang and Yezhi exchanged glances; it was really cheap! "Boss, I'll pay 100,000 tons, but I only want the clothing." The Boss pondered for a moment and moved his mouth a few times. "That wouldn't be fair to you; no way. Selling you the clothing for 50,000 tons." This Boss was really nice; she needed to pick out a few more items.
Feeling uncomfortable lying down, Yezhi simply stood on the stall to rummage through items. In this Northeast weather, Yezhi was struggling a bit; wearing the thick Cotton Padded Jacket made by Aunt Zhou, she already felt cold. If it snowed, she didn't know how she would manage.
"Master, this one is good!" Xiao Fang pulled off the deep gray short Cotton Padded Jacket from Barbie. "Master, try it on!" Yezhi happily put it on. "It's just right for Master." From the light screen pulled by Xiao Fang, Yezhi saw her fitting effect. From an 80s perspective, this Cotton Padded Jacket was too short and clearly ill-fitting; from a 21st-century viewpoint, it was a beautiful three-quarter sleeve cloak.
"Boss, how much for this?"
"5,000 tons, no bargaining." Yezhi was delighted; it was so cheap and such a great deal.
Yezhi rummaged through the Giant Vendor's stall and picked out ten Barbies for Madwoman, Aunt Zhou, Barefoot Aunt... each choosing one item.
