After helping her father finish his meal, Li Xiumei took the empty basket and headed home alone.
On her way back, thoughts of Zhao Guangcai's kindness towards Zhang Xiaoxiao kept surfacing in her mind, stirring up a wave of jealousy within her. She couldn't understand what charm Zhang Xiaoxiao possessed that made Zhao Guangcai treat her so well.
Li Xiumei believed she was not any less attractive than Zhang Xiaoxiao, and besides, she was younger and more gentle and considerate. Yet, why did Zhao Guangcai never spare her a glance?
She felt a deep envy towards Zhang Xiaoxiao, to the point where she almost hated her. Every time she encountered Zhang Xiaoxiao, she couldn't help but avoid her, unable to face her directly. Even hearing her voice made Li Xiumei choose to take a detour.
She feared that if she confronted Zhang Xiaoxiao, her inner jealousy would be laid bare. She was afraid of others discovering her true feelings.
As these thoughts swirled in her mind, she felt increasingly restless. With her head down, she walked slowly, completely unaware that the sky had gradually darkened. By the time she realized it, it was already pitch black outside.
"Oh no!" Li Xiumei exclaimed, hastening her pace.
She never expected to have dawdled for so long; now that it was completely dark, if she didn't hurry, it would likely be dawn by the time she got home. The thought made her dislike Zhang Xiaoxiao even more. If it weren't for her words, she wouldn't have wasted so much time.
As she continued to think this way, she quickened her steps. Suddenly, a slope appeared in front of her. She paused for a moment and then stopped in her tracks.
She remembered that this path was difficult to navigate because it was very slippery; ordinary people could hardly walk on it at all. Looking around, she saw no source of light other than the moonlight illuminating the way.
After hesitating for a moment, she took a deep breath, gathered her courage, and decided to try crossing it. She moved forward step by step, carefully placing each foot as she went.
However, the slope was too slippery. After taking just two steps, her foot suddenly slipped, and she lost control, rolling down the hill.
"Ah!" she exclaimed, and in her panic, she grabbed onto a protruding rock, trying to steady herself. But the rock was too slippery for her to hold on to. She could only continue rolling down due to inertia.
With a loud thud, she felt a sharp pain in her forehead, and everything went black as she lost consciousness.
As night fell, the stars in the sky twinkled faintly, illuminating the land below. In the midst of the weeds, Li Xiumei lay there, her life uncertain.
Not long after she fell unconscious, a black sedan approached from a distance.
"Young Master, it seems there's someone lying ahead," the driver noticed and quickly alerted Zhao Xiaosong, who was seated in the back.
"Hmm?" Zhao Xiaosong raised his gaze and indeed saw a dark figure in the grass. He furrowed his brow, paused for a moment in silence, then opened the car door and walked towards the bushes.
"Young Master, please be careful," the driver cautioned as he watched.
Zhao Xiaosong ignored him and walked straight to the edge of the bushes. He crouched down and reached out to check the person's breath.
She was alive but had merely fainted. He thought to himself and then reached out to grab her arm, pulling her out of the weeds with force.
He laid her flat on the ground and took out his lighter to ignite a flame, illuminating her face clearly.
It was a face he did not recognize. He had never seen her before. He frowned at her, puzzled.
Who was she? Why was she lying in the bushes?
He pondered this while checking her body again and found that aside from an injury on her forehead, there were no other external wounds.
"What should we do, Young Master?" The driver approached and asked as he looked at Li Xiumei lying on the ground.
"Let's get her into the car first," Zhao Xiaosong replied in a deep voice.
"Understood." The driver nodded and bent down to help Zhao Xiaosong lift Li Xiumei into the black sedan.
Zhao Xiaosong took his seat in the front passenger position while Li Xiumei lay in the back seat.
"Young Master, where are we going now?" the driver asked.
"To the village ahead," Zhao Xiaosong replied.
"Yes," the driver acknowledged, then started the engine and drove the black sedan forward.
Zhao Xiaosong turned his head and looked through the rearview mirror at Li Xiumei, who was lying in the back seat.
He felt that her features had a sense of familiarity.
It seemed like... he had seen her somewhere before.
However, after thinking for a long time, he couldn't recall where he had seen her.
He shook his head to dismiss the thoughts in his mind, turned back, and gazed out the window at the scenery outside.
The night was hazy, and the starry sky was brilliant.
A crescent moon hung in the sky like a sickle, emitting a soft glow.
The car drove through the night, and after about half an hour, it finally entered the village.
At this time, there were hardly any people in the village; every household had their doors tightly shut, resting.
The car stopped at the entrance of the village.
"Young Master, we've arrived," the driver said as he turned to Zhao Xiaosong.
"Mm," Zhao Xiaosong responded, then opened the car door and got out.
After the driver parked the car securely, he also got out.
The two of them lifted Li Xiumei from the car and supported her arms as they walked step by step into the village.
The night was hazy, and the moonlight was bright.
A black sedan slowly drove along the country road, attracting curious glances from passing villagers.
"Look over there, what is that?" someone asked in surprise.
"I don't know; it looks like a black sedan," another person speculated.
"A black sedan? What is that?" someone asked curiously.
"It's a kind of four-wheeled black box," an informed person explained.
"Wow, it looks really impressive," someone said enviously.
