Sang Zhi lowered her head and softly said, "Thank you." She took the soda bottle, and her fingertips accidentally brushed against Duan Jiayu's fingers, the warm touch making her heart skip a beat. She hurriedly withdrew her hand, keeping her head down, not daring to look into his eyes.
The afternoon sunlight streamed through the window, casting a golden patch on the floor. Duan Jiayu stood up, stretched lazily, and walked to the window, gazing at the distant sky. A few white clouds floated in the blue sky, resembling fluffy cotton candy, light and soft.
"The weather is nice today. Want to go for a walk?" Duan Jiayu turned around and looked at Sang Zhi, who was still standing in place, a faint smile on his lips.
"Okay... sure," Sang Zhi replied, her voice barely above a whisper.
Duan Jiayu picked up the keys from the table and walked out first. Sang Zhi quickly followed, matching his pace as she walked behind him.
On the tree-lined path of the community, sunlight filtered through the leaves, creating dappled shadows on the ground. Duan Jiayu walked ahead, his tall and upright figure appearing particularly slender in the sunlight. Sang Zhi silently followed behind him, her eyes fixed on his back without blinking.
"What are you thinking about?" Duan Jiayu suddenly stopped and turned around to look at Sang Zhi behind him, a teasing smile on his face.
"Nothing... nothing at all," Sang Zhi exclaimed in surprise, hurriedly lowering her head with a slight blush on her cheeks.
"Be careful while walking; watch where you're going so you don't bump into a pole," Duan Jiayu said with a smile as he reached out to ruffle Sang Zhi's hair.
Sang Zhi looked up against the light, unable to see Duan Jiayu's face clearly but could vaguely make out the hint of a smile at the corner of his mouth. His voice was deep and pleasant, like a gentle breeze on a summer afternoon, lightly brushing against her heart and leaving an almost imperceptible flutter.
"Thank you, brother," Sang Zhi said as she took the soda, her cheeks slightly flushed and her heartbeat growing louder as if it were about to burst from her chest.
Duan Jiayu, from this moment on, your voice will be the secret I keep hidden in my heart.
Sang Zhi lowered her head and silently followed behind Duan Jiayu. They walked side by side without saying a word, only the rustling of leaves and the chirping of cicadas echoed in their ears.
The afterglow of the setting sun filtered through the gaps in the leaves, casting mottled shadows on the ground. Sang Zhi secretly glanced at Duan Jiayu's profile; his face seemed to be bathed in a soft light, and the sharp lines softened, making her gaze linger with fascination.
"What are you thinking about?" Duan Jiayu suddenly turned his head, a hint of curiosity in his eyes as he softly asked her.
"Ah?" Sang Zhi's heart raced, feeling like a child caught doing something wrong. She quickly shook her head to cover up, "It's... nothing."
In her fluster, she took a step back but accidentally bumped into a bystander on the roadside. The ice cream in the bystander's hand fell with a thud, splattering white cream onto Sang Zhi's shoes.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" Sang Zhi hurriedly apologized, flustered as she tried to help the bystander pick up the ice cream, only to realize that her soda had also fallen to the ground. The light brown liquid spread quickly on the surface, filling the air with a sweet aroma.
"It's okay, it's okay. Are you alright?" The bystander comforted her upon seeing her flustered state.
Duan Jiayu noticed this and quickly grabbed her wrist, pulling her behind him with a tone that mixed helplessness and affection. "Why are you always so careless?"
As he spoke, he took out a tissue from his pocket and handed it to Sang Zhi. "Here, wipe it off."
"Thank you, brother." Sang Zhi accepted the tissue, lowering her head as she spoke softly. Her cheeks flushed slightly as she dared not meet Duan Jiayu's eyes.
Duan Jiayu looked at her and couldn't help but chuckle lightly. He reached out to ruffle her hair and said, "Be careful next time. Come on, I'll buy you a bottle of soda."
Sang Zhi nodded and followed behind Duan Jiayu, watching his tall and upright figure, feeling a sweet warmth surge in her heart.
The shops on both sides of the street were brightly lit, bustling with people. Duan Jiayu took Sang Zhi into a convenience store and let her pick out her soda.
Sang Zhi hesitated in front of the shelves for a moment but ultimately chose the same flavor as before. After Duan Jiayu paid, he took the soda from the cashier and handed it to Sang Zhi.
"Thank you, brother," Sang Zhi said with a sweet smile as she accepted the soda.
As they walked out of the convenience store, Duan Jiayu casually put the change in his pocket and turned to Sang Zhi, asking, "What do you want to eat? It's on me."
Sang Zhi shook her head, "No need, brother, I..."
Before she could finish her sentence, she was interrupted by Duan Jiayu. "What? Are you being polite with me?"
As he spoke, his gaze swept over the shops lining the street before finally landing on a barbecue stall that wasn't too crowded. "How about this place? What do you think?"
Without waiting for Sang Zhi's response, Duan Jiayu directly pulled her toward the barbecue stall. Sang Zhi stumbled slightly as he tugged her along and had to jog to keep up.
