Back in her hometown, Xuan Xiaowei stood in front of an ancient and towering wooden gate, embedded with iron rings, from which hung a few strands of pale willow branches.
This was the ancestral home of the Xuan family. Her father lived far away in the city, and her mother had passed away when she was very young. But every year, her father would call her back to visit her grandparents.
She took a deep breath, pushed open the door, and walked in slowly.
"Oh, Xiaowei, you're back!" A woman with white hair - Xuan Xiaowei's grandmother - came out happily.
"Grandma, long time no see, how have you been?" Xuan Xiaowei smiled warmly.
"I'm not too bad, just getting old. Look, your grandpa is busy gardening." Grandma pointed towards the backyard, where a half-bald, sturdy old man was tilling the soil.
"Xiaowei, I heard from your dad that you're coming back for the summer vacation, so I specially planted some radishes that you like to eat," Grandpa put down the hoe in his hand and walked over.
"I love you the most, Grandpa. You really dote on Xiaowei the most!" Xiaowei said moved.
"By the way, Xiaowei, it's been a bit unsettled in the backyard recently. You'd better not go over there." Grandpa's face suddenly turned serious, with a hint of severity in his tone.
"What's going on?" Xuan Xiaowei asked curiously.
"Well, there have been some strange noises coming from that area recently. I haven't investigated it myself, but something doesn't seem quite right," Grandpa replied.
Xuan Xiaowei has always resisted the warning in her heart: "Don't go near the backyard." The sunset is like blood, and the golden light shines through the treetops, gradually dyeing the backyard red. Like a magical scroll, it attracts her to explore the hidden secrets behind it.
"Hehe, the old folks are always too nervous," she muttered to herself as she quietly walked out of the house.
Xuan Xiaowei gently pushed open the back door and a subtle chill swept over her.
She didn't see an ordinary backyard, but a place filled with a mysterious atmosphere. Under that red light, there was a huge altar, covered with incomprehensible runes.
"It's so mysterious. How come I didn't see this thing glowing when I came here before?" She was very curious.
Just as Xuan Xiaowei was amazed, her gaze fell on a small cat stained red with blood.
The little cat was lying next to the ancient altar, its eyes filled with an almost human-like plea.
"Oh my, what's going on?" Xuan Xiaowei stepped forward and carefully cradled the kitten in her arms. The more she looked at the altar and the kitten, the more she felt an indescribable connection between the two.
Suddenly, mysterious forces emanated from the altar, as if they were trying to pull her in.
Xuan Xiaowei felt a sudden acceleration of her heartbeat, as if she was standing in front of a huge maze.
"Xiaowei, where are you?" Grandpa's anxious voice could be heard from a distance.
"Grandpa, I'm here!" she hurriedly responded, carrying the kitten out of the backyard.
"What's wrong, Xiaowei? You look so tense," Grandpa said, frowning as he saw her holding the kitten.
"Grandpa, this cat is covered in blood. I need to hurry and take it to the veterinary hospital."
"Okay, I'll drive you there."
In the animal hospital, the doctor performed emergency treatment.
"Fortunately, this young lady brought it in just in time, otherwise this little kitten might have died from excessive blood loss," said the doctor while cleaning the cat's wound.
This little kitten has been cleaned and now shows its original fur color and appearance.
The snow-like fur shines with a subtle luster under indoor lighting, like moonlight on a frozen lake, dazzling yet serene.
But due to the severity of the injuries, he is still in a coma.
"I have never seen such a beautiful white cat," praised the veterinarian.
But despite the veterinarian's praise, Xuan Xiaowei's mood did not seem to lift.
Thoughts surged towards the mysterious ancient altar like the tide. However, looking at the adorable cat in front of him, Xuan Xiaowei still felt a hint of warmth deep in his heart.
"Thank you so much, doctor. How long do you think it will take for it to wake up?" Xuan Xiaowei asked gently.
"The doctor replied, 'It may still take some time for it to wake up,' while completing the final cleaning for the kitten.
'Okay, thank you, doctor. Please let us know if the kitten wakes up,' Xuan Xiaowei said."
Xuan Xiaowei stood by the emergency box, gazing through the transparent glass at the unconscious kitten. A life support machine operated quietly, with tubes inserted into the kitten's nostrils to ensure it received enough oxygen, while another tube connected to its paw, providing nutrition.
"If you can hear me, I really hope you are safe and sound. Please wake up soon," Xuan Xiaowei whispered to the emergency medical kit, her mood particularly heavy.
Time quietly passed in this oppressive atmosphere. Xuan Xiaowei observed that as the life support machine continued to operate, the kitten's vital signs gradually stabilized.
"It seems that the situation is improving, but it's best not to let your guard down." The veterinarian walked in and glanced at the data on the life support machine.
"Yes, thank you, doctor," Xuan Xiaowei responded gratefully.
On the way home, Xuan Xiaowei's mood was immersed in various anxieties. Although the kitten's life had temporarily stabilized, she couldn't help but think about the mysterious backyard and the sealed ancient altar.
"Grandpa, have you ever heard of anything special or historical about our family before?" Xuan Xiaowei suddenly asked.
"Our family's affairs are too complicated. When you grow up a bit, you will naturally know," Grandpa said, with a barely noticeable expression of contradiction on his face.
Xuan Xiaowei felt a tightness in her chest, and perhaps all these mysteries were related to the ancient altar she had discovered in the backyard that day.
After returning home, Xuan Xiaowei immediately went to her room, wanting to make the most of her time to research the ancient altar.
However, my thoughts involuntarily turned to that little kitten.
"Maybe it's better to wait a little longer for the kitten," I thought.
Three days later, Xuan Xiaowei's phone suddenly vibrated, and the screen flashed with the words "Yian Animal Hospital." She immediately answered the call.
"Hello, is this Miss Xuan Xiaowei? The cat has woken up. Please come quickly to pick up this cat. Hurry over!" There was a sense of urgency in the voice.
Xuan Xiaowei looked at her grandfather, hung up the phone without saying a word, quickly put on her shoes, and hurriedly left the house with her grandfather, driving to the veterinary hospital.
After parking the car, Xuan Xiaowei felt a sense of impending doom and quickened her pace as she walked into the animal hospital.
Two uniformed nurses stood neatly behind the nurse's station, while the door to the examination room was partially ajar, allowing only a faint glimpse of the figure inside. This scene heightened Xuan Xiaowei's unease.
"Doctor, what exactly happened?" Xuan Xiaowei asked nervously.
The veterinarian adjusted his glasses and, with obvious fatigue, said, "This cat woke up and actually bit through the life support system, then jumped out, and now it's like this. It's too dangerous to approach."
Xuan Xiaowei followed the veterinarian's gaze and saw the cat crouching in a dark corner, its eyes filled with wildness and vigilance, with a hint of blood at the corner of its mouth. Its back was all puffed up, like a powder keg about to explode, a stark contrast to the previously soft and dependent little cat.
"Let me try." Xuan Xiaowei bit her lip, took a deep breath, and then carefully approached the extremely tense cat. Her heart was racing, but she continued to walk towards it with determination.
Just as she reached out to touch the kitten, it suddenly bared its sharp fangs and bit her arm fiercely. The pain pierced through her nerves, and she cried out in pain, immediately stepping back.
"It seems like it really doesn't recognize you," the veterinarian frowned.
Xuan Xiaowei Looking at that cat, a deep sense of pity and sadness welled up in her heart. At that moment, it felt like something deep inside her was being torn apart.
However, the cat's fierceness suddenly weakened, but it still struggled to stand its ground.
"Can I bring it home? Maybe it will feel more at ease at home," Xuan Xiaowei asked firmly.
The veterinarian hesitated for a moment, then finally nodded, warning, "Okay, but please be careful. Its condition is currently quite unstable."
The veterinarian put on gloves and offered a sedative food to the kitten. Although it didn't eat it immediately, for some reason, the kitten gradually fell into a deep sleep. Once it was completely asleep, the veterinarian carefully placed it into a pet carrier.
Xuan Xiaowei and her grandfather finished paying for the expenses of the kittens at the clinic these past few days. After that, they carried the cage out of the clinic, got into the car, fastened their seat belts, and then drove back home.
She asked her grandfather, "Grandpa, how did this cat appear in the backyard, and what is that altar for?"
Grandpa avoided the question and simply said to her, "Xiaowei, don't go near that altar. It is the seal that has been guarded by our family for generations. Some things are not for you to understand."
Xuan Xiaowei nodded, but she knew clearly that things were far from simple. She glanced at the pet cage in the back seat, where the little cat was still vigilantly observing its surroundings.
The wire mesh of the pet cage was tightly gripped by its small paws, and a pair of jet-black eyes, like stars in the night sky, shimmered with subtle anxiety.
