At dawn, the door of the firewood room creaked open, and a sliver of light spilled in. Yui quickly tidied up the thread and then crouched in the corner, shivering.
This was what the servant had told her: if she wanted humans to remain unaware that she was a deity, she had to learn the fragility and timidity of human women, which was quite frustrating.
An old woman walked in, her wide hips swaying more frighteningly than a eunuch's. At her age, she wore more makeup than a young girl. If this weren't the palace, Yui would have thought she was a madam from a brothel.
The old woman held a rattan stick thicker than her arm and pointed at Yui, saying, "Get up! What time do you think it is?"
Yui rubbed her fluffy sleepy eyes, hiding a glimmer of cunning that flashed in her gaze. Pretending to be confused, she said, "The Crown Prince punished me by sending me to the firewood room and didn't instruct me to do anything else."
"Hmph! The firewood room is under my management. Since you're here, I call the shots. You will do whatever I say!" The old woman spoke with particular excitement, saliva flying as she talked. Yui was startled; she was just like the eunuch.
"What do you want me to do?" It was early morning, and she was in a good mood, so she decided to let this old hag off easy.
"What else could you do?" The old woman looked at her sideways, disdain dripping from her expression as she snorted through her nose. "Chop wood."
Yui looked at the old woman in confusion. Was this how she treated everyone or just her? Since she entered, the old woman hadn't even glanced at her properly and had maintained an air of contempt. Yui felt disheartened; she didn't think she looked so unappealing to the public.
Who knew that her inner thoughts would slip out? Suddenly feeling a sharp pain on her arm, Yui covered it and stared wide-eyed at the old woman, annoyance creeping into her voice. "Why did you hit me?"
"Hmph! What's wrong with hitting you?" The old woman's sharp and sarcastic voice continued, "Do you think looking like this can seduce our Crown Prince? You should take a look in the mirror; you're just a toad dreaming of eating swan meat."
What? Yui's mind clearly couldn't process what was happening as she stood there, dazed, trying to digest her grandmother's words. Completely ignoring the warning her grandmother had left behind, "If you don't chop all the firewood here today, don't even think about going outside!!!" After saying this, her grandmother turned and walked out, not forgetting to lock the door.
