"Master Ye, it turns out to be you!"
Just as Lu Chen was puzzled, Sun Zizhao and the others rode back in haste. They had not gone far when they noticed that the monsters chasing them seemed to have disappeared.
Upon turning around, they saw a middle-aged man wearing a Purple Gold Cloak who had suddenly appeared. Assuming he had driven the monsters away, they rode back. As they got closer, they realized it was an old acquaintance.
Lu Chen turned to Sun Zizhao and the others, giving a mysterious smile. Old Mu and Lian Dashuang were also present. When they set off from the Five Element Sect, Old Mu and Lian Dashuang had left early to take a carriage to meet Sun Zizhao and the others in the Eastern Seven States.
At this moment, they were all bewildered by Lu Chen's smile; it felt familiar yet inexplicable. Even Sun Zizhao widened his eyes in confusion. His Sun Family had connections with the Red Robe Sect, but their meetings were infrequent, relying solely on the Demon-Slaying Sword as a token for identification.
Just as Lu Chen was about to reveal his identity, he suddenly felt a tremor beneath his feet and sensed something sneaking up from below. He hurriedly activated his Yin Spirit and leaped thirty feet into the air.
At the moment Lu Chen took off, the ground where he had been standing cracked open, and the soil began to bulge upward, directly blooming like a flower.
In an instant, amidst everyone's astonished gazes, a long and pointed Pangolin head emerged from the dirt. The Pangolin head looked incredibly realistic, complete with a nose, mouth, and a pair of glimmering glassy eyes that sparkled just like a real one. However, its head was somewhat oversized, as wide as a door.
Upon closer inspection, it became clear that this Pangolin was fake; it was not a real pangolin but rather a mechanism crafted to resemble one. When activated, it emitted sounds similar to those of Nether War Armor, suggesting some connection between the two.
The craftsmanship of this creation left Lu Chen astounded. Was this the monster that had been running faster than horses in the dirt earlier?
Before Lu Chen could recover from his shock, the Pangolin opened its large mouth and extended a dark tube from within, aiming it at Lu Chen. He blinked in confusion, unsure of what this creature intended to do.
Suddenly, Lu Chen's Yin Spirit sensed danger; it seemed that the tube emerging from the Pangolin's mouth was about to undergo a significant change.
Just as he thought about dodging away, there was a loud bang that sounded like thunder. A flash of fire lit up before him as a black sphere engulfed in flames shot toward him.
"What on earth! It's moving so fast?" Lu Chen shouted in surprise. He had no time to evade; a strong smell of gunpowder hit him directly as he was blown backward.
Fortunately, thanks to the Purple Gold Cloak and Essence Sphere left by Ye Nanzhai protecting his Yin Spirit from both inside and outside, although he was blasted away, he quickly recovered. There were no significant injuries aside from some loss of Yin Yuan.
If it were someone else, they would have probably died by now. What was that just now? It was incredibly powerful!
At this moment, the Pangolin turned its direction again and extended its dark tube towards Lu Chen. Having learned from his previous experience, Lu Chen quickly activated his Yin Spirit and jumped aside, causing the Pangolin's attack to miss.
A ball of black fire whizzed past the spot where Lu Chen had just stood, flying thousands of steps away and striking a distant rock, shattering the hard bluestone into pieces.
The Pangolin was indeed formidable, but it was somewhat clumsy and not very agile. Taking advantage of this gap, Lu Chen changed his hand movements and unleashed several streams of Imperial Aura, transforming them into blades that sliced towards the Pangolin.
In an instant, the Imperial Aura cut through the Pangolin's head, sending sparks flying. However, the Imperial Aura quickly faded away, and looking at the Pangolin, it seemed completely unharmed, just as it was before.
Its defense was truly terrifying; even the Imperial Aura couldn't cut through it. Lu Chen was taken aback!
The Pangolin aimed its tube at Lu Chen again and with a loud bang, it released a dark fireball that shot toward him with a long tail trailing behind.
Lu Chen hurriedly dodged to the side and once again changed his hand gestures to summon Four Phases Thunder. Instantly, two Electric Pythons, as thick as his arms, roared and lunged at the Pangolin. To his surprise, the opponent didn't even try to evade; half of its body emerged from the ground while the other half remained buried in the soil, taking a lightning strike head-on.
Lu Chen licked his lips in shock as he pondered how to deal with this troublesome creature when suddenly, the Pangolin spoke.
"Hehehehe, you must be the Supreme Leader Ye Nanzhai of the Red Robe Sect." A cunning old man's voice came from inside the Pangolin.
Lu Chen felt a chill run down his spine; he was deeply unsettled by that voice. It was so lewd that its sharp and androgynous tone made him feel an impulse to rush over and kill whoever was speaking.
He had already anticipated that this mechanical Pangolin was being controlled by someone inside it, so he wasn't overly surprised upon hearing this.
Before Lu Chen could respond, the old man's voice continued with a sneer: "Ye Nanzhai, your Imperial Aura cannot cut through me. And as for your lightning technique earlier, not only does it not affect me, but this Earth-Style Flying Shuttle I created by mimicking the Pangolin is powered by lightning. Although I don't know where your Red Robe Sect learned this technique from, I can assure you that the more you use lightning to attack me, the stronger my Earth-Style Flying Shuttle will become. Hehehehe." A series of sinister laughs echoed from within the Pangolin.
The Four Phases Thunder was merely a source of power for the Pangolin; using lightning against it would only make it more powerful!
Lu Chen raised an eyebrow; this old man was definitely a well-known figure in the martial world. The fact that he recognized Ye Nanzhai and knew that there were no techniques related to the Thunderbolt Dharmakaya within the Red Robe Sect indicated as much.
Only someone who had long been entrenched in the martial world could know some of the secrets within a sect, yet Lu Chen did not recognize him!
Indeed, there was no such technique within the Red Robe Sect; it was something Lu Chen had seized from King Jun's brother, Chuan Ru Mage, and then used Ye Nanzhai's Dharmakaya to perform it, leading this old man to mistakenly believe that Ye Nanzhai himself had arrived.
He mistook Lu Chen for Ye Nanzhai!
"Who are you?"
Lu Chen stood in the air wearing a Purple Gold Cloak and slowly asked. This old man was adept at using mechanisms and was incredibly strange; Lu Chen had never heard of such a person before. He was surprised that there was such a divine ability in the lower realms and had no idea which lineage it belonged to.
"Hmm? Ye Nanzhai, have you forgotten who I am? We crossed paths during the Azure Field Mountain incident; I was careless and suffered a loss at your hands. But I, Chen Qilin, am not someone to be bullied easily! After returning, I put in great effort to study this Earth-Style Flying Shuttle specifically to deal with you. How did my Thunderbolt fare just now? Was it pleasant?"
"Chen Qilin?" Lu Chen murmured; he did not recognize this person and had never heard of this name.
This old man claimed to be Chen Qilin, his voice very unpleasant—neutral and shrill, sounding almost like an old woman. From what he said, it seemed he had a grudge against Ye Nanzhai due to their encounter at Azure Field Mountain where he suffered a loss and harbored resentment, specifically developing the Earth-Style Flying Shuttle to target Ye Nanzhai.
Now, Lu Chen was disguised as Ye Nanzhai and had come here looking for someone, only to unexpectedly run into trouble right in front of Chen Qilin.
Of course, Lu Chen was unaware of the history between Ye Nanzhai and Chen Qilin. If he were to actively inquire about it, he feared that the other party might become suspicious. It would be better to go with the flow and see how things unfolded.
"So it's you; I thought it was someone else," Lu Chen said with an air of authority, fully embodying Ye Nanzhai's commanding presence.
"Hehehe, that's right; it's me, Ye Laomo. You’ve stumbled right into my line of fire; consider yourself unfortunate. What else do you have to say?" Chen Qilin sighed as if Lu Chen's life were about to end at his hands.
Lu Chen hesitated for a moment before replying, "Mr. Chen, you have a grudge against me, but why are you entangling yourself with those young juniors over there? They shouldn't have offended you."
Lu Chen was referring to Sun Zizhao and others, who had retreated several hundred steps away and were watching the situation from their horses.
Chen Qilin chuckled and said, "These people are lurking around the periphery of the Defender of the Realm's battle circle. In my opinion, their intentions are not good; they must be planning something bad. Therefore, I intend to capture them and hand them over to the Defender of the Realm for handling. Moreover—"
Upon hearing this, Lu Chen realized that Chen Qilin's mention of the Defender of the Realm indicated he was likely affiliated with the court. Given his expertise in crafting mechanisms and inventions, it was reasonable to conclude that the Nether War Armor used by the Loyalty and Righteousness Eight Men was related to him, possibly even created by his own hands.
Additionally, in recent years, the Great Zhou Court had frequently introduced a powerful weapon called Fire Thunder on the battlefield, which had immense destructive power—one of its projectiles could match a full-force strike from a Qi Master using Body Refinement Explosion. This too must have been crafted by Chen Qilin.
"What else?" Lu Chen asked.
Chen Qilin grinned again and said, "Moreover, that lady over there is fair-skinned and beautiful, with a prominent nose; she is from the Northern Jade Mountain Kingdom. I find her most suspicious and believe she might be a spy sent by Yushan Kingdom. Therefore, I plan to capture her alive and interrogate her separately before making further plans."
Lu Chen turned to look and saw Princess Zhulan with Sun Zizhao and the others. She was indeed stunningly beautiful, making it hard not to attract ill intentions from wrongdoers. With this thought, Lu Chen understood that Chen Qilin was in cahoots with the Defender of the Realm. While the Defender of the Realm fought ahead, Chen Qilin was too cowardly to engage directly in battle and instead hid at the periphery, only to encounter Princess Zhulan and develop malicious thoughts about capturing her for his own purposes.
He suspected that Sun Zizhao and others were also acting suspiciously as a cover for their own sordid intentions.
The saying goes: "A knife hangs over lust!"
This old fellow Chen Qilin had great skills but was infatuated with beauty. Why target anyone else when he chose Princess Zhulan? He likely had no idea about her identity and background; if he did know, he would probably be shocked.
