I smiled lightly and asked, "If you met a complete person, would you still choose me?"
Lu Ruijun's gaze was calm.
"I won't meet such a person," he said. "Not in this lifetime."
The next day, as I was heading out to work, I encountered a traffic accident. The driver took me to the hospital, where the doctor treated my wounds.
Just as I exited the Treatment Room, I saw Lu Ruijun and Zhang Yuan. They were standing at the other end of the corridor, seemingly unaware of my presence. Zhang Yuan had her head down, her eyes slightly red, while Lu Ruijun was softly comforting her.
After a moment, Lu Ruijun raised his hand and gently patted her shoulder. My heart felt as if it were being squeezed by a large hand, sending waves of pain through me. I hid behind the wall and waited for them to leave before stepping out.
That evening, when Lu Ruijun returned home, I quietly asked him, "Did you go to the hospital to visit a friend today?"
Lu Ruijun shook his head. "No, I just ran into her by chance."
I nodded and didn't ask further questions. Yet inside, it felt like being pricked by needles.
A chance encounter—yet another chance encounter. But Lu Ruijun and I had never met by chance. We were destined to meet.
A few days later, my father had an accident. He was targeted for revenge by someone wrongfully implicated in a case; that person had been planning his revenge ever since being released from prison. Finally, he succeeded.
My dad was taken away by the Provincial Government, and on the day of the public trial, I didn't go to the scene. I was afraid I would cry out loud. I was afraid I would break down. On my way back to Lu Ruijun's house, I encountered Zhang Yuan. A man was dragging her away, and she was crying heartbreakingly, her legs weak as if she had lost all her strength. I trembled all over, feeling dizzy and wanting to take out my phone to call the police. At that moment, a black sedan stopped in front of us. Lu Ruijun opened the car door and rushed out, kicking the man down. He pinned the man down tightly, his fists raining down hard. His eyes were bloodshot, veins bulging on his forehead, like an angry beast. I had never seen this violent side of him before. He clenched his fists tightly, his fingers cracking as if he wanted to crush the man's bones. "How dare you touch her!" "How dare you touch her!" he shouted angrily. Zhang Yuan was terrified, standing aside in confusion. I walked over and gently held her hand to comfort her, saying, "Don't be afraid, it's okay." Zhang Yuan clutched my hand tightly, unable to speak through her tears. I gently patted her back and adjusted her skirt. At that moment, the man suddenly got up, gripping a sharp knife tightly and charging towards me. I turned around and felt a sharp pain in my abdomen as a rush of wind pierced through my body.
I saw Lu Ruijun.
He shielded Zhang Yuan behind him, while I was stabbed in the abdomen.
He stared at me intently, his pupils trembling, his eyes filled with terror.
"Xu Yuezhu!"
He shouted my name loudly.
I couldn't hear his voice; I only felt something inside me slowly fading away.
I slowly reached out my hand, grasping his hand, and with all my strength, I managed to say a complete sentence.
"Jiang Yanzhou is in the alley, hurry and save her."
This sentence seemed to transcend time, returning me to when I was seventeen.
I lay in the alley, watching Jiang Yanzhou being killed before my eyes.
I wanted to scream, but no sound came out.
I wanted to stand up, but my body felt powerless.
Now, I finally shouted this sentence.
I fell into darkness.
I felt my body growing cold.
Lu Ruijun's calls became the last echoes of my life.
I woke up in the hospital.
I was two months pregnant.
But I had to have my uterus removed.
In the haze of consciousness, I didn't feel pain; I only felt cold.
Endless cold.
Lu Ruijun held my hand, continuously calling my name: "Xu Yuezhu."
