On a rainy day, traffic is always congested. The car had barely been on the road for ten minutes before it was completely stuck. Vehicles were jammed together, and the drivers were restless, honking their horns in frustration.
In contrast, Fu Weiheng remained calm, resting one hand on the window while gently pressing the accelerator, slowly moving forward.
Soft piano music played in the car, and the girl in the back seat had fallen asleep at some point. The windshield wipers worked rhythmically against the rain.
This morning, Xu Chengyang had dragged Su Wan out of her dreams, and after returning to her dormitory without taking a nap, she had gone out again. Now, sitting in this comfortable environment, Su Wan began to feel a bit drowsy. Her head tilted slightly, and she fell asleep.
Fu Weiheng glanced over and saw her sleeping peacefully, unable to help but smile at how relaxed she seemed around him.
By the time they arrived at Fu Residence, the rain had lessened. After parking the car, Fu Weiheng did not rush to wake her but instead sat quietly in the driver's seat, watching Su Wan. She leaned back against the seat with her head tilted, her long hair cascading over her shoulder, partially obscuring her serene and beautiful sleeping face. He reached out to tuck her black hair behind her ear, revealing her fair and delicate features completely.
As if sensing something, Su Wan furrowed her brow and opened her eyes. She looked around and remembered that she was sitting in Fu Weiheng's car. Sure enough, when she turned her head, she saw that Fu Weiheng had turned off the engine.
Su Wan blushed slightly and said, "Sorry, I fell asleep."
She had only intended to nap for a short while; who knew she would sleep through the entire ride without realizing it? She really could be so carefree no matter where she was or what she was doing…
Fu Weiheng unbuckled his seatbelt and smiled. "It's no problem."
As they entered Fu Residence, Fu Weijin was sitting on the sofa drinking tea and reading a book. Ye Fan was the first to dash into the living room, throwing herself into her mother's arms for affection.
Just as Su Wan stepped into the living room, Fu Weiheng followed closely behind. Su Wan glanced at Fu Weijin in the living room and then looked back at Fu Weiheng. It dawned on her that they truly resembled each other more than just a little; their facial shapes and features were almost identical.
Fu Weijin looked at the two people entering the room, one after the other, and was momentarily taken aback. Then, as if realizing something, she glanced at Su Wan with a half-smile, "Came back together?"
Fu Weiheng did not respond and walked straight into the living room. However, Su Wan appeared anxious as if afraid of being caught in something and blurted out, "No, no, we just ran into each other at the door."
Yet Su Wan momentarily forgot that Ye Fan was also with them. The child, innocent and straightforward, immediately said, "I went to pick up Teacher Su with my uncle."
Su Wan: "..."
This was exactly what it meant to be caught red-handed.
At that moment, Su Wan just wanted to find a hole to hide in, the deeper the better.
Clearly, nothing had happened, but her attempt to cover it up only made it seem like there was something going on.
She lowered her head and glanced at Fu Weiheng ahead. He remained silent but had a smile playing at the corners of his mouth, looking at her with a knowing expression.
Fu Weijin turned to look at Fu Weiheng again and suddenly understood something. No wonder Neil had taken the initiative to pick up Fan Fan; it turned out he had ulterior motives.
Fu Weijin smiled and took Ye Fan over to Su Wan, saying, "Fan Fan, go have class with Teacher Su."
After watching Su Wan and Ye Fan enter the Piano Room, Fu Weijin followed Fu Weiheng into the study while holding a cup of coffee.
The door to the study was slightly ajar. When Fu Weijin pushed the door open, Fu Weiheng was flipping through some office documents. She quietly closed the door behind her and walked over to place the steaming cup of coffee in front of Fu Weiheng before sitting down at the desk. Fu Weiheng did not look up; he naturally took a small sip of the coffee and said in a deep voice, "It's too sweet."
"I only put in half a sugar cube," Fu Weijin replied with a strange smile. "Maybe it's just that you've been living too sweetly lately."
Fu Weiheng ignored her.
Fu Weijin was well aware of her younger brother's temperament. Over the years, there had been many girls around him, but he always maintained a distant demeanor, treating them as if they were strangers. He had never even had a girlfriend. During the first few months after returning from the United States, he was always busy with work, hardly ever seen in the old house. However, recently he had not only been coming back more frequently but also often left work early to take breaks. Today, he even took the initiative to pick up Su Wan for class. It was the first time she had seen Neil show such interest in a girl, so naturally, she couldn't help but dig deeper.
“Neil,” Fu Weijin lowered her voice with a hint of laughter, “do you like Guan Guan?”
Fu Weiheng lifted his eyelids to glance at her but did not respond.
“Are you pursuing her?” Fu Weijin leaned closer to him.
“……” He continued to browse through documents.
“Not bad taste, huh?”
“……” He took a sip of coffee.
“Neil……”
“……” He kept flipping through the documents.
“Do you want me to help you?”
“……”
No matter what Fu Weijin said, Fu Weiheng naturally chose to ignore her. Unable to extract any words from him, Fu Weijin felt a sense of unwillingness but ultimately left the study helplessly. There was no way; if Fu Weiheng didn't want to speak about something, even if she talked until her mouth was dry, he would remain silent.
As Su Wan was preparing to leave, it was already nearing evening. Before she departed, she greeted Fu Weijin, who was sitting in the hall. However, Miss Fu seemed to have been waiting for this moment; she grabbed the car keys from the table and stood up with a smile, saying, "Come on, Guan Guan, I'll give you a ride home."
Su Wan waved her hand in refusal, "Miss Fu, there's no need to trouble yourself..."
"Mom, are you going out?" Ye Fan came out from the inner room. Seeing Fu Weijin with her bag and keys, she asked, "Are you going to find Dad? What about Uncle? Is he leaving too? Can Fan Fan go with you?"
Fu Weijin laughed and walked over to pick up Ye Fan, planting a big kiss on her cheek. "Fan Fan, be good. Mom is taking Teacher Su back to school. Uncle is at home; I'll be back soon."
Ye Fan, always sensible and obedient, and particularly fond of her uncle, climbed down from Fu Weijin's arms and replied eagerly, "Okay, then Mom come back early and be careful on the road. Goodbye, Teacher Su."
Su Wan: "..."
Is it really okay for the whole family to be so carefree like this...
Later, when Fu Weiheng came down from the study, he found Ye Fan sitting alone on the living room carpet playing with building blocks. The housekeeper Aunt Lin was cleaning nearby, but he did not see Fu Weijin or Su Wan, who should have been sitting on the sofa. He glanced at his watch and called out, "Vincent."
Ye Fan looked up from her blocks. "Grandpa Vincent is in the garden out back. Uncle, do you need him for something?"
Fu Weiheng frowned slightly and walked over to Ye Fan. "Fan Fan, did you finish class so early today? Where's Teacher Su?"
Ye Fan continued to play with her toys. "Teacher Su said I practiced my piece very well today, so she let me out early. Mom just took Teacher Su back to school."
Fu Weiheng smiled helplessly; he had calculated the time perfectly but hadn't anticipated that Su Wan would finish class early. He ruffled Ye Fan's black hair and decided to sit down on the carpet to play with her.
Sitting in Fu Weijin's car, Su Wan felt a bit awkward. Clearly, they were siblings, so why were their personalities and preferences so different?
Fu Weiheng preferred the understated and stable Cayenne, while Fu Weijin favored the flashy and luxurious Maserati.
Fu Weiheng loved noble and elegant Classical Music, but Fu Weijin was more enthusiastic about the wild and energetic K-Pop songs.
Fu Weiheng always appeared aloof and handsome, difficult to approach, while Fu Weijin...
Looking at the woman who was currently swaying to the rhythm of the music while driving, Su Wan felt confused again. Was this really the classical beauty Fu Weijin she had first met, who seemed as delicate as an orchid?
"Uh..." Su Wan spoke softly, feeling it necessary to ask Miss Fu to reduce the current speed of the car. "Miss Fu..."
"Just call me Wei Jin," Miss Fu seemed to be enjoying herself.
"Huh?" Su Wan was a bit taken aback.
"Neil calls me that," Fu Weijin said with a flirtatious smile as she turned her head towards her.
What does that have to do with anything...
Su Wan replied, "I'm feeling a bit dizzy..."
"Huh? Dizzy?" Fu Weijin quickly looked at her and then understood. She eased off the accelerator and reduced the speed. "Sorry, I'm used to driving fast. Ivan usually doesn't let me drive alone. I haven't driven in a while, so I got a bit excited today."
Su Wan: "..."
Fu Weijin reached out to turn off the music in the car and asked with a smile, “Guan Guan, are you dating Neil?”
Pfft...
Su Wan's tone instantly rose by two degrees: “Huh?!”
Fu Weijin was amused by her unexpected reaction and patted her shoulder: “Why are you shy? So, does our Neil have enough boyfriend energy?”
Su Wan quickly turned to face Fu Weijin and explained, “Miss Fu, you misunderstood! No! Absolutely not! I am definitely not dating Mr. Fu! Definitely not!”
Fu Weijin chuckled again, “I know, but there’s plenty of time ahead; it’s only a matter of time!”
Su Wan: “…”
“Guan Guan, do you know how Neil achieved all his accomplishments?” Fu Weijin changed direction and casually brought up the topic.
Su Wan remained silent but raised an eyebrow at her.
“By himself.” Fu Weijin glanced at her, smirking slightly, “It was forced out of him. Neil has been very smart since he was young; he learns quickly and understands things almost instantly. Of course, except for music.”
Su Wan was shocked, her mouth agape in disbelief: “Music… music?”
The famous Violinist, isn’t he supposed to be extremely talented?
“I know what you're thinking; shouldn’t a famous Violinist be musically gifted?” She chuckled lightly, “Quite the opposite. When Neil started learning the violin at four years old, his teacher said he was somewhat dull in terms of pitch perception; you could say he was tone-deaf. You know, the most important thing in learning string instruments is the ability to recognize pitch.”
Su Wan nodded in agreement. Her father had once praised her for having particularly sensitive ears; she could always identify those few notes at first listen. However, despite this, she still couldn't shake off her inability to sing on key.
"The teacher also very tactfully told my parents that while it was fine to let him play around, achieving any good results in this area was unlikely. Later, Neil probably learned about the teacher's evaluation from my parents by chance. One day, he quietly locked himself in the Piano Room and listened to the piano for an entire day. Everyone was surprised; he was only a four-year-old child, yet he had such a competitive spirit deep down. Perhaps it was because of the teacher's words, 'achieving any good results in this area is unlikely,' that he began to practice piano for 18 hours a day, 24 hours a day. He said he wanted to do his best. At nine years old, he held his first performance at the Lyon Concert Hall, receiving affirmation from everyone present, even from his violin teacher who had once underestimated him. But he was not satisfied with the outcome. Later on, he became a famous Chinese Violinist in Europe. We all thought he would feel proud of his achievements. However, he did not; instead, he started a band and organized a tour of performances."
Su Wan listened quietly. Such a glamorous identity was not easily obtained; it took ten years of hard work for one minute on stage. However, Fu Weiheng's efforts and dedication were beyond her imagination; she felt she couldn't even compare to him.
"When my parents sent him to learn the violin, they hoped it would occasionally ease his mood while cultivating his interests and talents. But unexpectedly, it became the source of his heavy pressure. He was truly crazy; such an obsessive and competitive nature—who did he inherit that from? Four years ago, during the last stop of the band's tour in London," Fu Weijin slightly turned her head, "Do you know what happened that day at the London Grand Theatre?"
Su Wan looked at Fu Weijin's serious profile, momentarily stunned.
Fu Weijin choked up slightly: "At the end of the performance, Neil collapsed after stepping off stage due to extreme exhaustion and fell down. Later, when he was taken to the hospital, the doctor said it was due to severe sleep deprivation and a mild concussion."
Su Wan opened her mouth slightly, feeling a pang in her heart and unable to speak.
"Neil rested in the hospital for a whole month; his grandfather rushed from America to London overnight upon hearing the news. Later, his grandfather forced Neil to take over Endless Group as an heir under the pretext of being unwell. Once his grandfather spoke, no matter how unwilling Neil was, he wouldn't dare disobey. We all knew that his grandfather wanted Neil to step out of himself and adopt a different lifestyle. Four years have passed; Neil indeed no longer pressures himself like before, but perhaps there are still some things he can't let go of in his heart; otherwise, he wouldn't have put so much thought into H&Y over these four years." At a traffic light intersection, Fu Weijin slowly stopped the car and held Su Wan's hand. "Guan Guan, I'm telling you all this not to make you sympathize with him or feel sorry for him. He is so proud and persistent yet cares so much about you; I know that you are special to him."
Su Wan replied softly: "No..."
Fu Weijin shifted gears and drove back onto the road. "Guan Guan, even if there’s nothing else, I’m very happy that Neil has made a friend like you because he has indeed changed a lot during this time."
That night, lying on her dormitory bed, Su Wan kept replaying Fu Weijin's words in her mind; she felt confused and restless.
It seemed that there was always a little place in her heart for Fu Weiheng. Sometimes she would worry about him unconsciously and wonder what he might be doing now. She wasn't sure if her feelings for Fu Weiheng were special or not and wouldn’t make any assumptions about it. But at least as ordinary friends go, she truly enjoyed spending time with Fu Weiheng.
Four years ago in London, if it weren't for her mother, she had planned to attend the Performance that year.
In June of that year, standing in front of the railing outside her mother's residence, she caught sight of her mother in the courtyard, radiating happiness. The lively and adorable boy was playing at her mother's feet.
Behind Su Wan stood a tall chestnut tree. A gentle breeze stirred, causing a few green leaves to fall and lightly drift down at her feet.
For a moment, everything felt particularly glaring to her.
She had never seen her mother smile, and even the fragments of life spent with her mother were pitifully few.
Clearly, that was her mother.
...
Later on, she missed the schedule and couldn't attend the Performance; that ticket still remains at Yishi's home.
In fact, even if she had gone to the Performance, they probably wouldn't have met. He would be on stage while she would be in the audience, separated by a great distance—how could they possibly cross paths?
