Ye Mingshang listened to the young man's straightforward words and smiled, finding this Fellow quite interesting.
"I see you're in good shape. Have you practiced martial arts before?" Ye Mingshang asked. Since earlier, he had noticed that every movement of the young man, from his walking posture to the way he swung his arms, was very steady. This was a characteristic often found in those who had trained in martial arts for many years. The robust vitality he exuded could only belong to someone with strong confidence and a fearless heart.
The young man nodded. "Yeah, my dad used to be an opera singer and trained as a martial artist. I liked it too, so I practiced with him since I was little. I've never lost a match; last time I fought with eight guys from the neighboring village, I took them all down by myself."
To create the illusion that the young man was alone, Ye Mingshang needed to keep his distance. However, he also had to catch the water ghost and protect the young man. He held two ropes in his hands: one connected to a fishing net, which he could pull to catch the water ghost when it bit, and the other tied around the young man's waist to prevent him from being dragged away without a chance for rescue.
Time passed slowly, but they didn't have to wait long this time; within ten minutes, there was movement. It seemed that the water ghosts could sense life forces and distinguish between strong and weak energies, but they couldn't identify them clearly. This explained why Ye Mingshang had waited so long before but still dared to act against him.
Watching the fishing rod shake, the young man's eyes widened. He stood up, aligning his body with his movements, and swung the fishing rod over his shoulder, forcefully casting out a greenish monster from the water into the air.
Seeing the young man throw the water ghost up, Ye Mingshang exclaimed "Nice!" and quickly acted by throwing a suppression talisman that accurately struck the water ghost, pinning it down so it couldn't move at all.
"Look! We caught it!"
"What is that? It's green."
"I can't see clearly; is that a water ghost?"
With the water ghost secured, Ye Mingshang didn't pay it any more attention but kept his focus sharp. From what he knew, these water ghosts were different from common ones; they were social creatures and there were likely more than just this one.
After waiting for a while, there was no movement on the water's surface. Ye Mingshang waved his hand to signal the young man to come back.
Not wanting to wait any longer, they took the water ghost back to the village.
Looking at the ugly water ghost lying on the ground, everyone was astonished.
"This ugly monkey is a water ghost?"
"Something so small can actually drag people into the water?"
"It looks so hideous."
"Don't be fooled by its size; it has quite a bit of strength. In the water, even several strong men can't hold it back. Moreover, they are excellent swimmers, faster than fish. Once in the water, we have no way to deal with them," Zheng Guoxing explained.
"So now that we've caught this water ghost, the reservoir should be safe, right?"
Ye Mingshang shook his head. "These water ghosts are social creatures; there is more than just this one. Unless we lure them all out, the problem will still remain."
Upon hearing this, everyone felt uneasy. Were there really many more? Would they still have to live in fear?
"Previously, Er Gouzi killed a water ghost, and within a couple of days, it caused trouble again. Isn't it too dangerous to bring this thing back?" someone asked.
"I'm not afraid of them coming; I'm afraid they won't come. As long as they dare to come, I will make sure they don't return," Ye Mingshang declared confidently.
Based on various signs, these water ghosts seem to hold grudges. Now that he has captured one, it is likely that the others will come to rescue it. If he just waits patiently, he might be able to catch them all in one go.
After having dinner at Zheng Guoxing's house, Ye Mingshang wanted to find a room to wait for the water ghosts to arrive.
"Senior, you should stay here with me. My old bones can still last a few more years. Just a few water ghosts; they can't do anything in the water. Once they're on land, I won't be afraid," Zheng Guoxing said.
They waited until midnight. Zheng Guoxing was getting old and couldn't stay up late. By eleven o'clock, he couldn't hold on any longer and fell asleep in his chair. Ye Mingshang sat in the chair, closed his eyes to rest lightly, while keeping his senses alert to the surroundings. The captured water ghost was thrown onto the ground beside him.
Suppressed by the talisman, it couldn't move or speak, only staring with its large yellow eyes at the young man who had captured it, resentment evident in its gaze.
Around one o'clock in the morning, Ye Mingshang suddenly opened his eyes after having them closed for a while. He listened carefully and heard a sound outside the door, like wet rubber slapping against something.
Suddenly, the door was flung open with a loud bang, and a green figure stood at the entrance. It looked similar to a Water Ghost Messenger but was slightly larger, with a big belly and shiny skin as if coated with a layer of film.
Unlike ordinary water ghosts who become weak and shriveled when they come ashore, this one appeared to be in good condition and still had strength to attack.
As the water ghost suddenly leaped forward with its mouth wide open, Ye Mingshang simply pressed a suppression talisman onto it. Instantly, the grotesque creature that had been so arrogant just a second ago froze in mid-leap and lay there dumbfounded.
Another water ghost jumped in through the window, and more followed from outside.
Ye Mingshang easily dodged their attacks and swiftly immobilized them all.
In total, there were five ugly green water ghosts thrown into the room, creating quite an odd scene.
No more water ghosts attacked, and Ye Mingshang also closed the doors and windows, closing his eyes to rest.
"This! Did you really catch all of these last night?!" In the morning, Zheng Guoxing woke up and was astonished to see six motionless monsters lying on the ground.
Ye Mingshang nodded, "Yes."
Impressive, truly impressive. He had been sleeping right next to him, yet Ye Mingshang had effortlessly captured five water ghosts without him knowing at all. Moreover, there were no signs of a struggle in the room, suggesting that it had been done with minimal effort; it must have been a single strike that incapacitated them, otherwise there would be some traces left.
After observing the Fellows for a while, the two looked at each other. "What should we do now?" Zheng Guoxing asked.
"I don't know. It would be great if more water ghosts came looking for them; that would save us the trouble of searching," Ye Mingshang replied.
After thinking for a moment, Ye Mingshang suddenly said, "It would be nice if we could communicate with them; we could gather a lot of information."
Zheng Guoxing's body trembled. "I have a method. Want to give it a try?"
"You have a method? What method?" Ye Mingshang asked.
Zheng Guoxing demonstrated his method by drawing a circular pattern on a square piece of paper. Then he folded it like origami into a Paper Crane. As he chanted an incantation, the Paper Crane slowly flapped its wings and flew out the window, quickly disappearing from sight.
