Ye Mingshang thought for a moment, puzzled, and suddenly had a flash of insight. He asked Xu Chen, "Did you just say Director Lu is dead? What happened?"
Indeed, it was strange. Although Director Lu looked like he was on the verge of death, he still showed signs of life. Why would Xu Chen say he was dead? His family was right here; wouldn’t they be angry about such a statement?
Xu Chen took a breath and said, "It's because of a card."
"A card? What card?" Ye Mingshang asked, confused.
"A Black Card. It says that Director Lu will die tonight." As Xu Chen spoke, he gestured with his hands to form a square shape.
"Clarify what you mean. What exactly is going on?" Ye Mingshang pressed.
Xu Chen took a deep breath to steady his emotions before continuing, "The story starts with the report I received this morning. Originally, another officer was on duty, but he felt unwell and asked me to cover for him.
However, less than an hour after I took over, I received a report about a death on Liunan Road. Homicides are serious cases, so Director Lu took me and several colleagues to investigate the scene.
When we arrived, we discovered that the deceased was none other than my colleague who had just been replaced this morning.
Director Lu examined the body and found no visible wounds. However, the face was pale and the body cold, as if he had been dead for a long time. Yet, he had spoken to me just an hour ago. Considering the time spent traveling, it hadn’t even been an hour since then. He was dressed warmly; how could his body cool down so quickly?
Later, Director Lu found a card on him with his name and various information written on it. The most terrifying part was that it included..."
"It stated his time of death, right?" Ye Mingshang interjected.
"That's right! The card clearly states the time of my colleague's death, which is twenty minutes after we parted ways. Later, a card also inexplicably appeared on Director Lu, recording his information and indicating that he would die tonight at eight o'clock!" Xu Chen said with a terrified expression.
"And then Director Lu ended up like this, right?"
"Exactly. When he first received the card, he didn't take it seriously, but just a few hours later, he started to feel weak, his face turned pale, and his lips turned purple. By noon, he collapsed, and the doctors couldn't find any reason for it; they just said he was on the brink of death and couldn't be saved." As he spoke, Xu Chen was still sweating profusely, his body trembling uncontrollably.
Ye Mingshang stroked his chin and asked, "Where are those two cards?"
Xu Chen pointed to a file bag on the table, his voice still trembling. "Since Director Lu collapsed, no one has dared to touch that card."
Sure enough, there was a yellow file bag on the table by the bed, which had gone unnoticed before.
Ye Mingshang walked over, picked up the file bag, and was about to open it when Xu Chen called out, "Brother Ye, don't! It really will kill someone."
Ye Mingshang turned back and gave him a reassuring look. "Don't worry; nothing can kill me yet."
He opened the file bag and poured out two black business card-like cards. Written in blood-red font were the details of two individuals and their times of death—one was his colleague's, and the other was Director Lu's.
Picking up Director Lu's card to take a look, it indeed stated that he would die tonight at eight o'clock.
Ye Mingshang put the card back into the bag, pondering: these two cards were no different from ordinary plastic membership cards; there was nothing special about them. So what was going on with Director Lu's condition?
"Is your colleague's body still in the Mortuary?" Ye Mingshang asked.
"Yes, I'm here, but the forensic examination didn't reveal anything," Xu Chen nodded and said.
"Take me there to have a look."
The two arrived at the Mortuary in the basement, where his colleague's body lay on a Small Bed, covered with a white cloth.
Ye Mingshang walked over and lifted the white cloth, revealing a pale face. Dark circles surrounded the eyes, and the forehead was notably dark, visible to the naked eye.
After flipping the eyelids and checking the body, Ye Mingshang found nothing unusual; it looked like he had died from a severe illness.
Ye Mingshang instinctively glanced around twice. "Wait! Where has his soul gone?"
Generally speaking, after a person dies, their soul lingers around the body due to attachment to the mortal world until it reincarnates in Yinming seven days later. However, although there were two little ghosts nearby, there was no sign of this man.
Ye Mingshang looked at a middle-aged woman not far away. "Have you seen this man's soul?"
"No... no, he didn't have a soul when he arrived," the female ghost seemed somewhat afraid of him and shrank back.
"None?" Ye Mingshang frowned. "Could it have been taken by something?"
After leaving the Mortuary, Ye Mingshang brushed past someone at the police station entrance and suddenly had a flash of inspiration, recalling the student he had passed in the dormitory.
"That's right! That person's situation seems similar to theirs; maybe I can find some clues from him," Ye Mingshang thought as he clapped his hands.
“Xu Chen, take me to school quickly!”
When they reached the school gate, Ye Mingshang called out and then returned to the dormitory with Xu Chen.
He didn't recognize that person and couldn't check from the list, but he remembered that the person had gone to the second floor. With such a noticeable appearance, it shouldn't be hard to find.
They went up to the second floor and searched all the rooms without finding that person. They then asked a student in the dormitory who was playing a game, “Do you know a student who looks very unhealthy, as if he might be seriously ill?”
The fellow, engrossed in his game, didn't even turn his head and replied, “You mean Wang Yu? He went out; he should be back soon.”
Sure enough, as soon as he finished speaking, the door opened, and a pale figure appeared before them. Compared to when they last saw him, he looked even weaker. His face was deathly pale with heavy dark circles around his eyes, as if he had been using opium for many years. His steps were unsteady and weak, as if he could fall at any moment; the shadows on his forehead were visibly pronounced.
The young man returned without looking at them and walked unsteadily to his bed, slowly sitting down.
Xu Chen approached him and took out his identification. “Hello, I’m a police officer. We need your cooperation regarding a murder investigation.”
Before he could say more, the roommate who had been playing games stood up in shock. “What the hell! No way! Did you actually kill someone?!”
Ye Mingshang turned to look at him and calmly said, “He didn’t kill anyone; there are just some circumstances that require his cooperation in the investigation.”
(To be continued.)
