Ye Mingshang shook his head and smiled, "Enough about me; you haven't shared how you've been all these years."
The female officer's expression darkened for a moment before she replied, "In the second year after I was adopted, my adoptive mother gave birth to a child. From then on, they didn't like me anymore and often made me do various chores. Later, I had the opportunity to join the National Security Agency and became an agent. Although the pay is low and it's quite dangerous, it's still better than being bullied at home."
Ye Mingshang patted her shoulder in silent comfort. He didn't have much to say; after all, every family has its own struggles, and many people are worse off than her. She was already considered fortunate.
In China, there are many cases like Xia, where families without children adopt a child only to suddenly have one of their own later. They then neglect the adopted child and even make things difficult for them. This isn't just a modern issue; it has existed since ancient times and is a human flaw that cannot be eradicated.
The female officer smiled and shook her head. "Anyway, that's all in the past. I'm doing well now; I have many good friends with me, so I'm not lonely. But I was really surprised to see you after so many years. How did you acquire such amazing skills?"
Ye Mingshang didn't tell her everything; he only mentioned that his adoptive father was an extraordinary person and that he learned his skills from him.
The female officer understood that he didn't want to elaborate on that topic, so she looked up at the starry sky instead.
"The moon is really beautiful tonight," she said.
"Yes, it is beautiful. I still remember my first day at the orphanage was during a full moon. The director prepared a lot of delicious food that day," Ye Mingshang said with nostalgia in his eyes.
"Yes, I remember! You were like a hungry wolf that day, nearly snatching all the food away, leaving many of the other kids crying because they had nothing to eat. It really worried the director," the female officer chuckled lightly while covering her mouth.
Ye Mingshang smiled awkwardly. "I couldn't help it; I had never eaten enough before. When there's food, you have to eat your fill because who knows when you'll get another chance?"
Though he spoke with a smile, there was an underlying bitterness in his words. Those who have never experienced poverty or hunger cannot understand this feeling. Even though Ye Mingshang wasn't short on money now, he still maintained his old eating habits.
The two chatted about everyday matters, rekindling their connection after years apart. Soon after, the female officer's radio crackled to life. She exchanged a few words with someone on the other end before looking at Ye Mingshang.
"Are you leaving?" Ye Mingshang asked.
"Yes, my captain wants me to return," the female officer nodded.
"Do you need my help? If you'd like, I can help you capture or eliminate those rioters."
The female officer glanced at him in shock at how casually he mentioned killing, as if he were discussing where to eat dinner. However, everyone has their own story; perhaps he had experienced something terrifying as well.
"No need for that. We can't control those matters. Things have escalated, and the captain has already notified the troops to handle it. We just need to focus on capturing the spies from Wa Country," the female officer shook her head in refusal.
"Alright then. If there's any danger, make sure to tell me. We're old friends, and I'll help you if I can," Ye Mingshang said, understanding her refusal and not pushing further.
"Thank you," the female officer nodded in gratitude.
Just as she was about to leave, she hesitated. They were in the wilderness, and she had no sense of direction. She didn't know how to get out, and the road was long; if she relied on herself, it would take an indefinite amount of time.
"Um... it seems I actually have something I need your help with..." the female officer said awkwardly, scratching her cheek with a smile.
Ye Mingshang understood and smiled back. "Old friends don't need to be so polite. Come on up." He half-squatted down, indicating for the female officer to climb onto his back.
Although they were childhood playmates from the orphanage and had bathed together when they were little, they had grown up now, and there were still some boundaries between genders. Even though Ye Mingshang didn't mind, the female officer felt a bit shy.
"What's wrong?" Ye Mingshang asked in confusion.
"N-nothing!" Looking into his clear eyes, the female officer felt embarrassed to say anything and quickly jumped onto Ye Mingshang's back.
Ye Mingshang lifted her up, holding her legs with both hands and weighing her lightly. "You're pretty light."
The female officer's face turned red, her cheeks flushed as she buried her head and didn't dare to speak.
"Hold on tight; I'm going to run fast," Ye Mingshang said before suddenly darting forward.
"Ah!" The female officer was startled and quickly wrapped her arms tightly around Ye Mingshang's neck.
As she slowly opened her eyes, she saw the scenery rushing past them at high speed, with the wind howling in her ears.
"How can it be this fast?" the female officer exclaimed in surprise.
Although she knew that Ye Mingshang possessed extraordinary physical abilities and several unusual skills, she had always thought it was within an acceptable range. But now his speed was comparable to that of a car—far beyond what human strength could achieve.
"Hold on tight; there's a small sand dune ahead. We'll get through it much faster."
"Little ***?" The female officer didn't hear clearly and felt puzzled.
However, she quickly understood what the other person meant. Even in the forest, due to the desert climate, the ground was primarily covered in yellow sand. Sometimes, there would be faults between the dunes, ranging from a few centimeters to several meters deep. What they were facing now was a chasm that resembled a cliff.
"Hold on tight." With a reminder, Ye Mingshang jumped up directly.
"Ah!!!" The female officer screamed in fright and couldn't help but hold on tighter.
However, after that, she didn't notice any signs of falling. When she opened her eyes and looked around, she exclaimed, "Oh my God! Am I actually flying?!"
Between the gap of several dozen meters and the bottomless abyss, the two were flying above it, like astronauts in space.
It wasn't until they had landed and had run for quite a while that the female officer snapped out of her astonishment. "Oh my God! You can actually fly?!" she exclaimed.
Ye Mingshang smiled but didn't reveal the truth. "How is that possible? I just jumped far enough."
"Far enough? Jumping with someone on your back for dozens of meters?" The female officer murmured to herself.
Under Ye Mingshang's lead, who disregarded the terrain like a human catapult, they quickly appeared in the city. Ye Mingshang set her down at their meeting point, left a contact method, and without lingering, left like the wind.
"Is... is this really a person?" The female officer watched Ye Mingshang's departing figure and couldn't help but murmur softly. It wasn't until her companions came out to meet her that she snapped back to reality and turned back for one last glance before entering. (To be continued.)
