Looking at the man's pleading expression, Ye Mingshang's thoughts and demeanor did not change much; she continued to calmly observe him.
"You came here intending to abandon your child?" Ye Mingshang asked.
The man's cold sweat poured down, his teeth chattering uncontrollably.
"Yes!" That single word seemed to require immense effort to squeeze out from between his teeth.
Upon hearing the answer, Ye Mingshang fell silent and stood up, preparing to leave.
"Friend, brother, big brother! Please, save my wife and child! I'm begging you!" Not knowing how to address her, the man switched titles several times and then heavily knocked his head against the ground.
"Since you intend to abandon them, why do you want to save them? Even if you save them, they will still die. Isn't that redundant?" Ye Mingshang paused but did not turn back.
The man bit his lip tightly, seemingly unaware of the pain. His lips turned purple and bled from being bitten. His brows were tightly furrowed as he gripped the grass with all his might, his knuckles turning white from the strain.
"At first, I intended to abandon them. Both Xiaoru and I are students at Nanjing Medical University. Out of impulse... we took that step. But I never expected her to get pregnant; we really did use protection.
I was scared and initially wanted an abortion, but my family is poor and I had no money. I didn't dare tell anyone. I couldn't borrow money either, so it dragged on until I missed the opportunity for an abortion. In the end, I had no choice but to come here."
Upon hearing this, Ye Mingshang continued walking away. She had no extra sympathy for irresponsible fellows like him.
"I'm begging you! Please save them. All the mistakes are mine; I deserve to die, but they are innocent! I'm begging you, have mercy and save them! Please!" The man knelt and hurriedly moved a few steps before heavily knocking his head on the ground again. Because he hit a sharp stone, blood flowed continuously from his forehead.
"Since you've decided to abandon them, why do you want to save them?" Ye Mingshang's voice came without any emotion.
"Because... because... because she is the woman I love most!" The man closed his eyes tightly as tears streamed down uncontrollably. "I know I'm a scoundrel; I'm shameless and deserve to die! I regret it deeply—not for tasting forbidden fruit but for not having the courage to face it. I shouldn't let them pay for my mistakes.
If someone has to die, let it be me. I've come to terms with it; I can't keep running away. I'm begging you; you have such great power; surely you can save them? If you save them, I'll work like a mule for the rest of my life in gratitude!" The man crawled a few steps forward and looked up at Ye Mingshang with desperation in his eyes.
Ye Mingshang turned around and locked eyes with him. The man's discomfort was evident under Ye Mingshang's sharp gaze, yet he did not close his eyes or look away. As he said, he did not want to escape; he had to face it bravely.
Enough! Enough! Enough! If a wayward son returns, saving them once would be worth it. Just this once, have I truly changed?
With a sigh in his heart, Ye Mingshang silently walked in front of the woman, took out a small golden pill, and pried her mouth open to feed it to her. The man watched anxiously from the side. Although he did not know what Ye Mingshang had taken out, it seemed precious. He could only hope it would save the lives of her and her child.
The pill was indeed extraordinary. Just a few breaths after being fed, the woman's complexion changed from pale to much rosier, and her tightly furrowed brows relaxed. As her consciousness returned, her tightly closed eyes slowly opened.
"Ajie," the woman called softly.
"I'm here, I'm here. Xiaoru, I'm here," the man hurriedly ran to her side and tightly grasped her raised hand.
"Ajie, what happened just now? I felt like I was dying, but why do I feel so good now? Is this a moment of clarity before death?" The woman's voice was somewhat sorrowful. Previously, she had been unclear about her surroundings and did not realize Ye Mingshang's efforts to save her. Now that she felt her body recovering, she thought it was merely a fleeting moment before death and felt somewhat unwilling.
"No, it was our benefactor who saved you, saved us. Benefactor? Benefactor?" The man turned around, but Ye Mingshang had already vanished without a trace. A sudden shock hit him, followed by a sense of loss.
"What’s wrong?" the woman asked.
"Nothing," the man shook his head. "Xiaoru, the benefactor gave you something to eat that helped you recover. Quickly see if you have the strength to give birth to the child."
"Mm." The woman nodded firmly.
After about ten minutes, accompanied by a loud cry of a newborn baby, a new life came into the world. Perhaps due to the miraculous pill, the woman's condition did not appear too dire; she looked quite energetic.
"Hurry, let me see the child," the woman said breathlessly.
The baby did not look like an ordinary newborn; instead, it resembled a child several weeks old. Its eyes opened wide and sparkled cutely but appeared somewhat unfriendly as it struggled and seemed distressed. They had no experience and assumed all babies were like this.
Looking at the adorable baby in her arms, the woman cried; she simply could not bear to part with such a lovely child—this was her baby!
“Ajie, let's not abandon the child, okay?” the girl said, her voice pleading.
The man also put away his smile, looking remorseful. He bent down and gently stroked the girl's back.
“I’m sorry, I was a jerk before. Don’t worry, we won’t abandon the child; we will raise him. I can drop out of school, I can work; I won’t do anything to let you down again. I will take good care of you both from now on. We will live well as a family, alright? Xiaoru?”
Hearing the man's voice, the girl felt delighted but also puzzled, wondering why he had changed so much and so quickly. As if sensing her thoughts, the man caressed the child's face and then touched the girl's head, his face full of remorse and affection as he said:
“Perhaps some truths can only be understood through experience. After going through this incident, I’ve come to realize things; maybe it’s an epiphany. I don’t want to run away anymore; I want to take on the responsibilities like a man.
Fortunately, you’re both safe. Thanks to the benefactor who saved you; otherwise, if you and your child had left me, I really don’t know what I would have become.” By the end of his words, the man looked quite emotional.
However, the woman showed no sign of blaming him. She freed one hand to gently stroke his somewhat haggard face.
“As long as you can change and grow, nothing else matters. I forgive you for everything.”
The woman was not easily moved, but once she was touched emotionally, it was hard for her to let go. When she felt love, she was willing to give up many things for it; this was indeed true.
...
After giving the woman a Yuqing Pill, Ye Mingshang had already left. The position of the fetus had been adjusted correctly; all that was needed now was a natural birth. With the help of that pill, everything would go smoothly.
As for whether they would choose to raise the child or abandon him after birth, it had nothing to do with him. This child was given a chance at life after many reincarnations; coupled with the effects of the Yuqing Pill, he would possess higher intelligence. If he were to die unjustly, he would undoubtedly become a Vengeful Spirit. At that time, he would naturally seek revenge on them, which would have nothing to do with him. How they chose—life or death—was entirely up to them.
Atop a mountain peak was a flat area where one could see far into the distance; the misty clouds were quite beautiful. Ye Mingshang sat cross-legged on a large stone about two meters long. In this setting, he exuded an ethereal feeling; if he changed from leather clothing to a white robe, he would truly resemble an immortal figure.
He sat there from noon until evening and then from evening until dawn. The sun set and rose again; dew dampened his clothes, and even a bird landed on his shoulder.
Feeling the first ray of morning light in the sky, Ye Mingshang opened his eyes, startling the resting bird away. He lightly shook off the dew on his body; his entire demeanor truly gave off an aura of an otherworldly Expert.
"Half a day and a night, with the sun setting and rising, finally... I can understand." He stood up and brushed off the dust from his clothes.
Can he truly understand? Perhaps, at least on the surface, he appeared normal, just like before.
A new day had begun; yesterday's troubles could not become today's burden. A new day should bring a new life. Instead of leaving immediately, he started the morning practice that he had intermittently neglected.
Each move seemed ordinary, yet contained endless variations. It had been a long time since he had practiced seriously. It wasn't arrogance that made him think he was strong enough not to need it; rather, it was the lack of purpose and direction. Even the person from his dreams felt elusive—where were they, and how could he find them? There was no clue. After days of confusion and exhaustion, after half a day and a night of contemplation, it felt as if he had an epiphany; that long-unseen hope seemed to open a small crack.
The "Three Corpse" represents the three "evil desires" within the human body, which are personified as three types of worms. The Taoist text "Dream of the Three Corpses" states: "There are Three Corpse Worms in the human body." Specifically, these include the Upper Corpse Worms, Middle Corpse Worms, and Lower Corpse Worms, hence referred to as "Three Corpses and Nine Worms." To cultivate Taoism and embark on the path to immortality, one must eradicate and eliminate the roots of the "Three Corpse."
The Upper Corpse Worm is called Peng Hou, located in the head, causing foolishness and lack of wisdom.
The Middle Corpse Worm is called Peng Zhi, located in the chest, leading to worries and delusions, preventing tranquility.
The Lower Corpse Worm is called Peng Jiao, located in the abdomen, inciting desires for food and intimacy.
The belief that "killing the Three Corpse leads to attaining golden immortality" led ancient people to indulge in alchemy and medicine in hopes of exterminating the Three Corpse Worms. Taoism emphasizes cutting off attachments, while Buddhism refers to this as "breaking attachments," transcending desires.
To achieve Xian Dao (the path of immortality), there are two routes: one is to sever the Three Corpse and cut off the Seven Emotions and Six Desires, transcending worldly matters.
The second is to refine away the Three Corpse while remaining in the mortal world without forgetting it. The Seven Emotions and Six Desires are fundamental to humanity; many are unwilling to part with them. To become an immortal requires refining the Three Corpse. Greed, anger, and ignorance are also parts of oneself; refining them can lead to Xian Dao but is not considered orthodox—one would only become a type of "scattered immortal."
