Why are there no surveillance cameras in funeral homes, and not even mirrors?
Rotating cameras and mirrors are known as "anti-evil mirrors," which can reflect things invisible to the human eye from both the yin and yang realms. Installing such items for the deceased at the moment before they leave this world is considered extremely disrespectful.
I witnessed something once that still haunts me to this day.
This incident happened three years ago when I was working at a funeral home in Cai Xuqian Zhuangyang Town.
Working in a funeral home has a certain stigma; generally, you can't get in without good connections, and the work is quite relaxed, mostly consisting of night shifts.
Our county is small, and there is only this one funeral home. We rarely received many bodies; most of the first half of the night was spent symbolically walking around, and by the second half of the night, we could sleep.
As for the corpses, they lay there unexpectedly; there was no need to keep an eye on them since they wouldn't go missing.
At first, I was a bit apprehensive, but I gradually got used to it. However, an unusual event later occurred that made me completely distance myself from this job.
That night, after my rounds, I returned to the duty room, closed the door, and brewed a cup of tea from 1982, feeling quite comfortable.
Suddenly, I heard a strange noise coming from outside. It sounded odd, like something was banging against the wall. But what could it be in a funeral home at this late hour?
Upon listening closely, I realized the sound was coming from the morgue at the back of the yard. At that time, I was young and bold; without thinking much, I leaned out of the window to take a look.
I saw that the door of the morgue had somehow opened slightly.
I initially thought I had accidentally left it open when I came out, so I grabbed a flashlight and put on my coat to go close it.
But before I could step out of the room, there was another loud noise. At that moment, I suddenly noticed a dark shadow moving in the yard.
At that moment, I thought someone had entered, but then I realized that didn't make sense. Who would be crazy enough to sneak into a funeral home at night? Once I figured that out, I started to feel scared.
If it wasn't a person, could it be a ghost?
With a mix of curiosity and fear, I instinctively picked up my flashlight and shone it in that direction. But the moment I did, I nearly scared myself to death.
There was indeed someone in the yard. To be precise, it couldn't possibly be a person because their movements were incredibly stiff, continuously banging against a wall.
The strength was surprisingly great; even the gurney was kicked far away by them. When the beam of light hit that figure, they suddenly paused and then turned to look at me.
It was then that I clearly recognized this figure as the female corpse that had been brought in during the shift change.
I was so frightened that I almost wet myself—really, I almost did. My legs went weak, and I collapsed onto the ground, unable to get back up. Before I could recover, I noticed that the sounds from outside had suddenly stopped.
Cautiously, I gathered my courage and looked outside, but as soon as I did, I felt a warmth spreading in my pants.
There she was, slowly making her way to my window.
Her expression was terrifying; she didn't even have eyeballs—just hollow sockets staring at me.
I quickly covered my mouth, not daring to breathe for fear that she would discover my little life of over twenty years was about to end right there.
The woman seemed unsure of what she wanted; she banged on the window repeatedly, each thud resonating in my heart.
I couldn't move at all. After what felt like an eternity, she finally stopped knocking and seemed to wander back into the yard. Throughout that night, there were intermittent sounds of things being knocked over in the yard.
Every second and minute felt like a year, and I spent the entire night curled up in the corner, too scared to move.
That night truly terrified me, and it wasn't until the next morning when I heard knocking at the door that I felt like I had come back to life.
At first, I thought it was that lady wanting to come in, which made my heart race, but when I heard a familiar voice outside, I finally felt relieved.
It was Manager Li Zhongping, who had just started working with us.
He was startled to see me looking so lost.
I spoke to him with a trembling voice, telling him that I felt like I had risen from the dead last night. Fortunately, Manager Li didn't laugh at me; instead, he kept comforting me.
Later on, everyone began searching the yard because losing a body was no small matter.
After searching around, they finally found the female corpse in a corner outside the yard.
At that time, no one dared to speak about it because the lady's clothes were all torn.
The manager not only didn't charge that family but also provided them with a set of services for preparing the body. Later, he arranged for me to take a half-month break while still receiving my salary, with the only condition being that I shouldn't talk about it.
Not long after that, I resigned from this job and never dared to work in such places again.
