When I woke up again, I was lying in a hospital bed. The nurse told me, "You were in a coma for three days. Your dad brought you here. He got into a fight outside and accidentally fell into the river and drowned."
I sat there in a daze, my mind blank. My dad was dead? The man who sold me, forced my mother to death, and wanted to sell me to a fool—he was finally gone?
I instinctively clenched my fists but felt a hard card in my hand. It was the card the nurse had picked up, with an address written on it: New city Jinchang Group. That was the address from the letter my Sister had given me.
I treasured that card and held it close to my chest, silently vowing: I must go to New City and find my Sister.
The doctors and nurses were discussing me, saying that I seemed stunned, just sitting there after waking up without crying or laughing. They didn’t know that it wasn’t that I couldn’t cry or laugh; I just didn’t dare to. I was afraid that if I relaxed even a little, the tears would start flowing.
My mother was dead, my father was dead, and I had become an orphan. The hospital transferred me to an orphanage, but I only stayed for a week before quietly slipping away.
I went to find a stall selling soy milk at the Morning Market. The owner was an elderly man in his sixties who took pity on me and let me help him sell soy milk.
The stall was small, with just one Soy Milk Maker and two large pots. Every day, I had to wake up at three in the morning to grind the beans and cook the soy milk, working until eight in the morning when I could finally rest.
I carefully tended to the Soy Milk Maker every day, constantly wiping it until it shone brightly. In between making soy milk, I would sit nearby and do my homework.
The old man's soy milk cost two yuan per bowl. Every night before going to bed, I would count the money he paid me that day and save it up. I planned that once I saved enough money, I would go to New City to find my Sister.
But I hadn't saved enough money when the war broke out in the North. Everywhere there were refugees, everywhere there was smoke from gunfire. The entire North was in chaos, except for the East, which was relatively stable.
I followed the crowd of refugees heading east for half a month before finally reaching the Central Plains Region. Along the way, I encountered a merchant caravan. The leader of the caravan, seeing that I was an orphan, took pity on me and allowed me to ride with them.
The leader's name was Liu Yang. He was in his forties, tall and with dark skin. He told me, "We are a volunteer team, helping refugees settle in the East for free."
"Our group is headed to New City, so you can come with us; at least you'll have someone looking out for you."
I cautiously asked, "Is there Jinchang Group in New City?"
Liu Yang scratched his head and replied, "Jinchang Group? I've never heard of it."
I immediately felt anxious. "How could you not have heard of it? My Sister said that Jinchang Group is in New City and is one of the largest companies in the country."
Liu Yang thought for a moment and said, "What you're talking about might be Jinchang Manufacturing."
"I heard that Jinchang Manufacturing's headquarters is in New City, not outside of it."
New City? Why did my Sister write New City in her letter to me? Could it be that my Sister is not in New City?
My mind was in turmoil, and I didn't know what to do. Liu Yang comforted me, saying, "It's okay; just come with us. Once we get to New City, you might be able to find your Sister."
I nodded and anxiously climbed onto his truck. The large truck was filled with refugees, and we picked up quite a few more people along the way. It took us a whole month to finally arrive at the New City district.
Liu Yang told me, "Up ahead is New City; you can get off now."
I jumped off the truck and stared blankly at the bustling streets, unsure of where to go next. Liu Yang waved at me and said, "This is New City; you can find your way from here. We have tasks to attend to and need to leave."
After finishing, the big truck drove away, belching black smoke and making a loud rumbling sound.
