Du Ming swung his sword and broke open the dungeon door. Before I could react, he rushed to my side, nervously scanning me up and down. "Are you hurt? Did they do anything to you?"
I shook my head and grasped his bloodied hand. "I'm fine, what about you? Why are you covered in wounds?"
"Just a few minor injuries, nothing serious." He forced a light smile, but the bloodshot look in his eyes was unmistakable. I knew he must have gone through a fierce battle to rescue me.
The seal on the evil power had drained all our spiritual energy. Du Ming, disregarding his own unhealed wounds, carried me back to the Du Family.
As soon as we stepped through the door, Mr. Du approached us, his usually stern face showing rare concern. "Lingxi, are you alright? Did those people make things difficult for you?"
I shook my head to indicate I was fine. Mr. Du sighed and turned to Du Ming with a stern tone. "You reckless child! Look at what you've done! If it weren't for your stubbornness, how could we have gotten into this mess? And you dragged Lingxi into it!"
Du Ming lowered his head in silence, not arguing back.
"Dad, this isn't Du Ming's fault; it's my—"
"Lingxi, you don't need to defend him!" Mr. Du interrupted me. "Do you know how serious this situation is? There are rumors spreading outside that the Du Family is colluding with a cult, and everyone is on edge! Even your Guo Family..."
"Dad!" Du Ming suddenly raised his head, cutting off Mr. Du's words. "I will handle everything and won't let anyone else get hurt or bring shame to the family." His tone was resolute, and his eyes were filled with an unprecedented sense of responsibility.
I looked at Du Ming; the once impulsive and brash young man had become so composed. My heart was filled with mixed emotions. Mr. Du sighed deeply and patted Du Ming's shoulder. "It's good that you understand. Now focus on making amends for your mistakes."
In the days that followed, Du Ming took charge of family affairs. He decisively resolved internal crises within the company and quelled external rumors. Those shareholders who once looked down on him now regarded him with newfound respect. I quietly observed his transformation; he was no longer easily angered or impulsive but had learned to think calmly and weigh the pros and cons.
"You've changed a lot lately," I said one evening while sitting in the study, watching Du Ming handle documents.
He looked up with a hint of a smile in his eyes. "Really? It's all thanks to you."
"Me?" I was puzzled.
"You made me realize that impulsiveness solves nothing; only calm thinking can lead to the best solutions." He set down the documents, walked over to me, and gently embraced me. "Thank you, Lingxi."
I leaned against his chest, listening to his strong heartbeat as an unprecedented sense of happiness surged within me.
I decided to combine my medical skills with modern technology to develop more effective medicines to help more people. Du Ming provided me with the best resources and equipment; I established my own laboratory and devoted myself entirely to research.
"Lingxi, you're truly a genius!" Bai Wei exclaimed as she looked at my latest research results. "This is simply a miracle in the medical field!"
I smiled lightly. "This is all thanks to Du Ming's support; without him, I wouldn't have been able to accomplish any of this."
Bai Wei winked at me. "It seems this crisis wasn't entirely bad after all."
Though Bai Wei often appeared carefree, she proved reliable when it mattered most. She used her connections to help promote positive images of both me and Du Ming. At charity galas, our donations always accurately reached those in need; at academic conferences, my developed medicines received recognition from authoritative figures in the medical community. Gradually, our reputations transcended the rumors; more people began to focus on our achievements and recognize our efforts.
Seeing the changes in me and Du Ming, our fathers also set aside their grievances. Mr. Du no longer maintained an air of superiority but frequently visited my laboratory to inquire about my research progress and even offered to invest in my projects. Mr. Guo couldn't stop smiling, boasting about how excellent his daughter and son-in-law were whenever he met someone new. Watching their beaming faces filled me with immense satisfaction; once rival families had finally come together because of me and Du Ming, becoming a true family at last.
However, a peaceful life is always short-lived. That evening, I was taking a walk in the garden with Du Ming, enjoying the rare tranquility, when the butler hurried over, holding a letter in his hand. "Sir, Madam, there is a strange letter; the sender's address is blank." A sense of unease gripped me as an inexplicable anxiety surged within. Du Ming took the letter, opened it, and his expression immediately turned serious.
The letter contained only one sentence: "The seal is not eternal; beware of the shadows behind you." The handwriting was scrawled, as if written with a twig dipped in ink, exuding an eerie aura. In the corner of the paper, there was a strange symbol that resembled some ancient script I had never seen before. Du Ming tightly clutched the letter, his eyes filled with vigilance and unease. I had a premonition that a greater storm was about to arrive…
