I packed a simple bag and left the Du Family under the cover of night. Du Ming was still guarding outside the study, and I didn't dare to disturb him. With a heavy heart, I climbed over the wall from the backyard. The night breeze blew gently, dispersing some of the gloom in my heart. I wandered aimlessly on the street until dawn began to break, at which point I stopped in front of a tea stall.
"Miss, would you like a bowl of tea?" the owner greeted me warmly. I nodded and sat down opposite him, holding a steaming rough porcelain tea bowl, but my thoughts drifted back to a few days ago. That day, while sorting through my father's Medical Book, I unexpectedly discovered a jade pendant. It had a strange pattern engraved on it that I had never seen before, yet it felt oddly familiar. I searched through all the books and finally found a similar pattern in an ancient text, next to which were the words "Qingyun Sect."
Qingyun Sect? I had never heard of this sect before. Could this jade pendant be related to my origins? With this thought, a glimmer of hope ignited in my heart. Perhaps I could use this jade pendant to uncover the mystery of my background and clear my name.
As I was lost in thought, suddenly a powerful wave of spiritual energy surged from behind me. Alert, I turned around to see a mysterious figure dressed in black with a conical hat standing behind me. He exuded an overwhelming sense of pressure, and his sharp eyes were fixed intently on the jade pendant in my hand.
"Who are you? What do you want?" I asked cautiously.
The mysterious figure remained silent, only letting out a cold laugh before swiftly attacking me. I hurriedly dodged and summoned my Silver Needle to shoot at him.
The Silver Needle whistled through the air, aiming directly at the mysterious man's face, but he easily evaded it. His speed was astonishing; in an instant, he was right in front of me with his fingers clawed like talons, reaching for my throat. I sidestepped to avoid him and countered with a palm strike aimed at his chest, but was met with a powerful force that knocked me back several steps before I steadied myself.
"Lingxi!"
A familiar voice called out from afar, causing my heart to tremble. Turning around, I saw Du Ming standing tall like a celestial being descending from above. He radiated an imposing aura and his piercing gaze was locked onto the mysterious man.
"Du Ming, what are you doing here?" A mix of emotions surged within me; wasn't he supposed to be in the study? Who told him I was here?
"I was worried about you." Du Ming offered no further explanation as he pulled me behind him and coldly stared at the mysterious figure. "Who are you? Why are you attacking my wife?"
The mysterious man ignored Du Ming entirely; his gaze remained fixed on me as if I were his prey. With a cold snort, he launched another attack—this time targeting me again.
Du Ming pushed me aside and confronted him head-on. The two engaged in combat instantly; powerful waves of spiritual energy shook the surrounding buildings and cracked the ground beneath us. Stunned by this sudden turn of events, I could only watch helplessly as they fought fiercely.
Du Ming's swordplay was fierce and deadly with every strike aimed for the kill, while the mysterious man's movements were unpredictable and elusive. For a moment, they seemed evenly matched. However, it was clear that Du Ming was holding back to protect me and couldn't fight at full strength.
Sure enough, during one exchange, Du Ming was forced to evade an attack aimed at me but left himself open instead. The mysterious man seized the opportunity and struck him squarely in the chest. Du Ming spat out blood and was sent flying backward.
"Du Ming!" I cried out in alarm and rushed over to support him. His face was pale with blood at the corner of his mouth, yet he gritted his teeth against the pain and grasped my hand anxiously. "Are you okay? Are you hurt?"
I shook my head but couldn't hold back my tears. "I'm fine! What about you? Is it serious?"
"I'm fine; it's just a minor injury." Du Ming reached out to wipe away my tears with an unprecedented gentleness in his tone. "Don't be afraid; I won't let anything happen to you."
Supporting Du Ming, my heart was in turmoil. He had risked everything to protect me even at great cost to himself; how could I not be moved by such loyalty?
When we returned to the Du Family estate, Mr. Du's expression was as dark as thunderclouds ready to burst. Upon learning that I had gone out without permission and attracted an unknown assailant, he erupted in anger.
"Absurd! Simply absurd!" Mr. Du slammed his hand on the table and glared at me furiously. "Who gave you the courage to act so recklessly? Do you have any idea how much trouble this could bring to the Du Family?"
I lowered my head in silence. I knew that I had acted impulsively this time, but it was all for uncovering the truth and not dragging down the Du Family.
"Father, this is not Lingxi's fault; it was my decision to send her out for investigation." Du Ming stepped forward and took responsibility for me.
"You still dare to speak!" Mr. Du became even angrier. "You know very well what the situation is, yet you let her run wild! Do you even see me as your father anymore?"
Du Ming wanted to say something, but I pulled at his sleeve. I knew that continuing to argue at this moment would only make things worse.
At that moment, a delicate voice came from outside the door. "Oh dear, what's going on? Why are you all arguing so early in the morning?"
The green tea girl slinked in with a sway of her hips. Upon seeing Du Ming and me, a glimmer of glee flashed in her eyes. She walked over to Mr. Du and spoke softly, "Uncle, please don't be angry; it's not worth it to ruin your health. Sister-in-law, I know you mean well, but some matters are beyond our control. You should focus on your recovery."
On the surface, she appeared to be mediating, but in reality, she was pouring oil on the fire, implying that I had meddled in affairs that didn't concern me and had brought trouble to the Du Family.
As expected, Mr. Du became even angrier. He pointed at me and shouted, "Someone! Take the Young Mistress away! No one is allowed to let her step out of this room without my command!"
I was taken away, and before I left, I saw Du Ming trying to intervene but being held back by the green tea girl. She whispered something in his ear, and his expression grew even darker.
I was confined to a room, filled with unease and anxiety. I knew that this matter would not be easily resolved.
Sure enough, the next day, Mr. Du sent someone to convey that a family meeting would be held to publicly scrutinize my identity and intentions.
I realized that this was an extremely severe test for me. If I could not prove my innocence at the meeting and win the trust of the Du Family, then I would lose everything, including Du Ming...
