The white mist swirled violently as if being torn apart by a giant beast. I tightly grasped Du Ming's hand, my palm slick with cold sweat. The old man had his hair and beard tousled, muttering incantations as spiritual energy surged around him. Finally, a crack appeared in the formation, and Du Ming pulled me forward without hesitation.
"Thank you for saving us, senior!" I looked back, but the old man had vanished without a trace, leaving only a few Silver Needles on the ground, glimmering faintly. There was no time to think; Du Ming dragged me along as we ran frantically until we confirmed it was safe to stop.
"Bai Wei..." I gasped for breath, the first thought that crossed my mind was Bai Wei's safety. We immediately rushed to the place where Bai Wei had been held captive, but it was already deserted, leaving behind a scene of devastation.
"Damn it!" Du Ming punched the wall, creating a deep dent in the hard surface. "They've moved Bai Wei. Where could she have gone..."
"It must be Du Hai!" I gritted my teeth. Du Ming's uncle, Du Hai, had always been ambitious, but I never expected him to be so despicable as to use Bai Wei to threaten us.
"What do we do now? We have no leads..." I leaned weakly against Du Ming, filled with despair and self-reproach. If it weren't for me needing rescue, Bai Wei wouldn't have been dragged into this mess; it was all my fault...
"We will find her, Lingxi," Du Ming said firmly as he held me tightly. "I've already sent people to investigate; I'm sure we'll have news soon."
However, things did not go as hoped. For several days, we found no information about Bai Wei, as if she had vanished from the face of the earth. Worse still, taking advantage of this opportunity, Du Hai completely took control of the Du Family and began a frenzied pursuit of us.
"Bang!" A hidden weapon whizzed past my cheek and embedded itself in a tree trunk behind me, splintering wood everywhere. My heart raced as I quickly hid behind Du Ming.
"Who are these people?" I whispered cautiously, scanning our surroundings. Ever since that night we escaped from the Du Family, these attacks had not ceased; their strikes were ruthless and clearly aimed at our lives!
Du Ming's brow furrowed deeply as his thin lips pressed into a straight line; he was clearly contemplating the enemy's origins. "We need to get out of here!" He pulled me along, his feet barely touching the ground as he moved like a shadow through the trees.
We fled but could never shake off our pursuers. They seemed like relentless pests that wouldn't go away. Even more frightening was their uncanny ability to track us down every time.
"This isn't working," I panted heavily; my stamina was nearly depleted.
Du Ming realized the seriousness of our situation and stopped to look at me with deep concern. "Lingxi, we need to split up."
"What?" I looked up in shock. "No! It's too dangerous!" I couldn't imagine facing those ruthless pursuers alone or being separated from Du Ming.
"Listen to me." He cupped my face in his hands with an undeniable tone. "If we keep going like this, we'll both be caught. Splitting up will make us less conspicuous and easier to find an opportunity."
"But..." I was still worried.
"Don't worry; I'll be fine." He lowered his head and gently kissed my forehead. "Promise me you'll take care of yourself."
The determination and tenderness in his eyes made it impossible for me to refuse. I bit my lip and finally nodded.
"Wait for my news." With those words, he turned resolutely and melted into the darkness on the other side.
My heart felt like it was gripped by an invisible hand as I watched him leave; an unprecedented sense of fear and helplessness enveloped me.
I forced myself to suppress my unease and followed the agreed-upon route alone to an abandoned temple on the outskirts of town. This had once been one of Bai Wei's favorite places; I hoped to find some clues about her whereabouts.
The temple was dilapidated and overgrown with weeds, filled with a decaying odor in the air. Cautiously pushing open the rickety door, I saw scattered household items on the ground in the dim light—among them was Bai Wei's favorite pink hairpin.
My heart sank suddenly. Could it be that Bai Wei had really encountered misfortune? No, I couldn't give up hope!
I searched the temple carefully, hoping to find more clues. Suddenly, my gaze fell upon a worn-out Medical Book. The pages were yellowed, clearly aged. I flipped it open casually, and it contained ancient medical techniques, many herbs and treatments I had never heard of.
I became intrigued; over the years, I had been studying medicine, hoping to advance my skills. As I read the contents of the book, I grew increasingly amazed. These ancient medical practices seemed to have some mysterious connection to what I had learned, as if they were part of the same lineage but even more profound and inscrutable.
Could it be that my medical skills were not merely a coincidence but rather a legacy?
Just as I was immersed in the world of the ancient Medical Book, my phone suddenly rang. It was Du Ming calling.
"Lingxi, where are you? I've found some clues, but the situation isn't good..." Du Ming's voice carried a hint of fatigue and urgency.
"I've made some discoveries too..." I briefly mentioned the situation at the temple and the ancient Medical Book. Du Ming fell silent for a moment, and his tone became serious. "Lingxi, I feel we might be caught up in a larger conspiracy. We need to be more cautious."
"I understand." My heart grew heavier.
At that moment, a strange voice suddenly came through the phone. "Mr. Du, Miss Guo, it's an honor to speak with you. We are an organization dedicated to maintaining world peace and justice. We have been watching you for a long time. We understand your situation and are willing to offer assistance, but on one condition: you must join us."
I was taken aback. Maintaining world peace and justice? Join them? This sudden invitation—was it hope or another entrance into an abyss?
