My mind was racing. Was there something about me that they coveted? Suddenly, a thought struck me—was it the formula for the Revival Pill? Once this idea emerged, it refused to leave my mind. 0

Before I could think further, the men in black had closed in, their attacks ruthless and aimed at taking my life. Du Ming protected me, fighting while retreating, but it was clear he was outnumbered. 0

“Lingxi, you need to go!” Du Ming shouted angrily, pushing me away while he was surrounded by the men in black. 0

“Du Ming!” I felt my vision blur with rage and helplessness. 0

At that moment, a shadow flashed by. The men in black fell to the ground as if struck by invisible blades. A tall figure appeared before me, wearing a mask that obscured his face. However, from his sharp gaze, I sensed an overwhelming pressure. 0

He placed an unconscious figure at my feet. I looked closely and was shocked to see it was Bai Wei! 0

“What is this…” I exclaimed in surprise as I looked up at him. 0

He didn’t speak but simply shoved a note into my hand before vanishing into the night like lightning. I unfolded the note, which contained only a brief line: “She is Du Ming’s friend; take care of her.” 0

I clutched the note, filled with confusion. Who was this mysterious person? Why did he save Bai Wei? What was his relationship with Du Ming? 0

Before I could sort through my thoughts, distant shouts and sounds of battle reached my ears. My heart raced—were the men in black coming back? 0

“Lingxi, let’s go!” Du Ming had finished off the men in black and rushed to my side, grabbing my hand and running. 0

We sprinted away and finally escaped the fog-covered forbidden area. I suppressed my fear and confusion as I followed Du Ming. By the time we returned to the Du Family estate, dawn was breaking on the horizon. 0

The villa was brightly lit, with servants rushing around, their faces showing panic. Before I could ask anything, the butler hurried toward us, pale and anxious. 0

“Master, you’re back! Something has happened—something serious!” The butler gasped for breath. 0

Du Ming’s brow furrowed as he spoke coldly, “What’s going on? Speak slowly.” 0

“About half an hour ago, a group of people broke into the villa. Our people fought bravely but still…” The butler’s voice grew more frantic. “They… they damaged the security system and took away…” 0

My heart sank. Had they returned? What had they taken? 0

“What did they take?” Du Ming’s voice was icy and chilling. 0

“It’s… it’s a painting from Master’s study,” the butler stammered. 0

Du Ming said nothing but quickly walked toward the study. I followed closely behind, filled with unease. The study was in disarray; papers and books were scattered across the floor, and where the painting had hung on the wall now lay only emptiness. 0

“It seems they came prepared,” an elderly voice came from behind me. I turned to see that mysterious old man from the auction! 0

How could he be at the Du Family? Could it be... 0
"Who are you?" I asked in surprise. 0
"I am a friend of Du Ming and have been secretly protecting him," the old man said calmly. "I know you have encountered some troubles recently, so I came to check on you." 0
Du Ming turned around, his gaze sharp as he stared at the old man. "What do you know?" 0
The old man smiled slightly and said, "I know more than you can imagine. Those men in black, and the group that barged in today, they all come from the same organization, an ancient sect of cultivation." 0
A cultivation sect? The scene I witnessed that day in the forbidden area flashed through my mind. Could it be... that everything is true? 0
I struggled to suppress the unease rising within me and tried to calm myself down. Du Ming's expression was terrifyingly dark; I knew he must be very angry right now, but I was more worried that he would act impulsively. I tugged at his sleeve and whispered, "Let's stay calm and think this through." 0
Du Ming took a deep breath, nodded, and turned to the old man. "Senior, do you know what this cultivation sect is all about?" 0
The old man stroked his beard and slowly replied, "This sect is called the Xuanming Sect. It has a long history, said to trace back to ancient times. They operate mysteriously and rarely show themselves in the secular world, but their strength should not be underestimated." 0
"Xuanming Sect..." Du Ming repeated the name softly, a glint of coldness flashing in his eyes. "I will find out exactly what they want!" 0
I could see that Du Ming had made up his mind to investigate this matter, and I did not try to dissuade him further. I knew there were some things he had to face on his own. 0
Bai Wei had sustained some injuries and needed rest, so I stayed behind to take care of her while Du Ming took several trusted subordinates to embark on a journey to investigate the Xuanming Sect. 0
A few days later, Du Ming returned with an even darker expression than before. My heart sank as I quickly asked, "What happened? Did you find anything?" 0
Du Ming remained silent and pulled an ancient jade pendant from his pocket, handing it to me. 0
I took the pendant and examined it closely; it was intricately carved with a lifelike phoenix holding a pearl in its mouth—clearly not an ordinary item. 0
"Where did you find this pendant?" I asked. 0
"Xuanming Sect," Du Ming replied in a low tone. "I found out that the current leader of Xuanming Sect is named ancestor Xuanming; he was once a brother-in-arms with my father." 0
"What?!" I exclaimed in disbelief as I looked at Du Ming. "You mean your father... was also a cultivator?" 0
Du Ming nodded, pain and confusion filling his eyes. "I didn't know about this before. I found some notes left by my father that revealed he joined Xuanming Sect when he was young but left for some reason and returned to the secular world." 0
"So... what happened between your father and ancestor Xuanming? Why is Xuanming Sect causing trouble for you?" I pressed on. 0
Du Ming shook his head with a bitter smile. "I don't know either. My father's notes didn't record these details; all I know is that when he left Xuanming Sect, it seemed there was a significant argument with ancestor Xuanming..." 0
Just then, Du Ming's phone suddenly rang. He answered the call, and his expression instantly turned extremely grim. 0
"What did you say?!" Du Ming's voice was filled with anger and fear. "Impossible! This can't be happening!" 0

I had never seen Du Ming so out of sorts, and an ominous feeling suddenly rose in my heart. 0
"Who was on the phone?" I asked anxiously. 0
Du Ming hung up, took a deep breath, and tried to calm himself down. Then he looked at me and said slowly, "It was... a strange number. He said... he knows the truth about why my father left the Xuanming Sect all those years ago. He also said... if I want to know, I have to go alone to the abandoned factory on the outskirts of the city..." 0
Before he could finish his sentence, his phone rang again, still from that strange number. Du Ming hesitated for a moment before answering the call. A cold voice came from the other end: "So, Master Du, have you made up your mind? I advise you not to play any tricks; otherwise..." 0
Before the person could finish speaking, Du Ming abruptly hung up the phone, a look of determination flashing in his eyes. I knew he had made his decision. 0
