Gu Yan still clearly remembers that midnight ten years ago, when the sky was filled with stars and a magnificent galaxy stretched overhead, within reach. The ocean was dark, merging seamlessly with the night sky, creating an indistinguishable boundary, as if trapped in a confined space, oppressive yet mysterious.
At that time, he was just a fifteen-year-old boy on a voyage across the sea. Tired of the unchanging sky and ocean, he retreated to the ship's lounge after dinner. Waves crashed rhythmically against the sizable vessel, causing it to sway slightly.
The prolonged rocking of the ship soon lulled Gu Yan into a deep sleep, where he found himself in a rather unpleasant dream. He was running endlessly in a boundless space surrounded by deep blue, devoid of any impurities. Desperate to escape, he ran forward with all his might, but the space behind him kept closing in, like an infinite loop of a Möbius strip with no end in sight, filling him with a suffocating sense of despair.
Deep blue,
Deep blue,
An inescapable deep blue,
A deep blue that cannot be avoided.
Once swallowed, there is no turning back.
When he finally awoke from this nightmare, he had no idea how much time had passed. He opened his eyes wide, gasping for breath, gripping the sheets tightly beneath him; the pressure from his thumb and index finger left deep red marks, yet he felt no pain. After some time, his breathing gradually calmed down as he listened to the sound of waves coming through the window. He tried to adjust his breathing rhythm and attempted to fall asleep again but found no trace of drowsiness. So he decided to take a walk on deck.
The cool midnight ocean breeze swept over Gu Yan, soothing the heat within him. A fear brought on by the deep blue was ultimately calmed by another shade of deep blue. He walked to the mast, propped himself up on his arms against the railing, and gazed into the distance.
Suddenly, he spotted a figure far out at sea. Due to the distance, he couldn't make out any details but could only guess it was a teenager with a slender build facing away from him, golden hair cascading down to their waist.
As if sensing someone watching, the figure slowly turned around to reveal its front; still too far away to see its face clearly. Yet even at such a distance, when the figure turned towards him, Gu Yan felt an inexplicable sensation of locking eyes with someone. The impact that struck his soul made him feel fully awake.
He squinted to see more clearly but it was futile. At that moment, the figure began to move closer to Gu Yan's direction. The pace was neither fast nor slow; it approached with a calm demeanor.
Gu Yan held his breath—or rather felt as if breathing had become difficult—as if someone had tightened their grip around his throat. He dared not blink for fear of missing this unforgettable scene.
The figure drew nearer like a long shot from an old movie, gradually coming into focus from blurry to clear inch by inch—slowly yet steadily.
As it came into view, a splash of blue appeared—like a drop of red ink on blue paper—strikingly vivid.
It was a young person about his age; seaweed-like golden hair fell over delicate shoulders. Their face was strikingly beautiful yet aggressive-looking but exuded an innocent expression that made one want to draw closer without feeling threatened. Their narrow eyes squinted into slits when they smiled. Pointed ears peeked out from beneath their hair. Light blue scales adorned their cheeks near their ears. This was a mysterious creature from the sea—a Beautiful Siren.
Gu Yan inexplicably felt a flicker of panic.
In the overwhelming deep sea blue, a fifteen-year-old boy and a Beautiful Siren stood together.
Without any warning,
we met.
