Fortunately, the Qiu Long glanced at us a few times before lowering its head again, continuing to circle above the water's surface. We let out a long sigh of relief, wiped the cold sweat from our foreheads, and continued to observe.
We saw the Qiu Long swim a few laps in the Xuanchi before lifting its head to look in our direction. We quickly shrank our necks and hid. After observing for a while, the Qiu Long lowered its head again and resumed its circling above the water.
Seeing this, we quietly pulled back a bit, preparing to flee at any moment. The Qiu Long circled for a while longer before slowly swimming toward the shore. We hid behind the rocks, watching nervously.
Once it reached the shore, the Qiu Long extended its tongue to lick the rocks at the edge before slowly retreating back into the water, continuing to circle. After watching for a while, we wondered, "Could it be that the Qiu Long is already full?" But if it was full, why didn’t it leave the Xuanchi and instead stayed in the water?
After thinking for a long time, we couldn't come up with any answers. Xiao Xiao suggested, "Why don't we go back first and come back tomorrow to investigate further?" We nodded in agreement and quietly left our hiding spot behind the rocks, making our way back down the mountain path to the village.
The night passed without incident.
Early the next morning, we got up early and hurried to check on the situation at Xuanchi. When we arrived at the edge of Xuanchi, we found the water surface calm as a mirror, with the Qiu Long hiding at the bottom and refusing to come out. Standing on the shore, we were momentarily at a loss.
After some thought, Xiao Xiao whispered, "How about we catch a few wild rabbits and throw them in to see if we can lure out the Qiu Long?" A Meng and I nodded in agreement upon hearing this.
So we returned to the village, asked some villagers for a few wild rabbits, tied them securely with old vines, and then went back to Xuanchi. Once at the shore, we placed the wild rabbits down and hid behind a stone cliff, nervously watching the water's surface. The air in the mountains felt heavy as if all living creatures were holding their breath.
Time passed second by second, and suddenly the water in the pool began to bubble vigorously. The bubbles grew larger and more dense, and suddenly, waves surged up. We were so tense that we didn't dare to breathe, staring intently at the center of the pool.
We saw the water churning, and half of the Qiu Long's body leaped up, its dragon head arched back, opening its massive mouth wide as it lunged toward a wild rabbit. We were stunned into silence at the sight. It turned out that the Qiu Long was indeed hunting in the Xuanchi; no wonder it had refused to leave the Xuanchi all day.
We watched as the Qiu Long grabbed the wild rabbit and tilted its head back to swallow it whole. Then, it submerged back into the depths of the water, disappearing from view. We exchanged nervous glances, secretly delighted: it seemed that the Qiu Long was indeed interested in wild rabbits. Since it was willing to come out for a rabbit, our plan was already halfway successful.
Next, we just needed to continue observing and find the right moment to act. We spent another day waiting by the Xuanchi and finally figured out the Qiu Long's habits. It usually came out to hunt in the evening, each time for about fifteen minutes. If it didn't find food within that time, it would return to the bottom of the pool. Moreover, every time it emerged, it would emit a howling sound, as if announcing its presence to those around.
After discussing among ourselves, we decided to wait until evening to carry out our plan. Time passed slowly until finally, we reached evening.
