The house was extremely spacious, though not heavily decorated, it was very tasteful. The light gray interior walls contrasted sharply with the pitch-black exterior walls, and the black furniture gave the entire space a sense of transparency and elegance.
On the table, there was a purple box from which a delightful fragrance wafted, filling the room with its aroma.
As we sipped tea, we struck up a conversation with Wujin Old Man and Wujin Old Mama. It turned out that this elderly couple had dedicated their lives to helping others; whether familiar or unfamiliar, they would lend a hand whenever someone asked for help.
Despite having donated a considerable amount of money over the years, their family estate was substantial, and coupled with their hard work and capability, they remained free from financial worries.
Wujin Old Man and his wife had graying hair but sat upright with vitality and bright eyes. Although dressed in black, they exuded an air of elegance and integrity.
Seeing the elderly couple filled me with admiration.
While we were chatting, a girl with a Azure Flower headdress entered, whispered a few words to Old Mama, and then left. Wujin Old Mama smiled and gestured a few times; Xiao Xiao and A Meng informed me that it was time to eat.
Just then, two men wearing blue headbands brought in a large black table along with five black wooden chairs, arranging them neatly in the center of the room. Several Azure Flower Maiden s carried black wooden trays filled with golden pots, bowls, and other utensils, all arranged meticulously.
Wujin Old Man and Wujin Old Mama smiled and invited us to sit around the table. Noticing our puzzled expressions, Wujin Old Man stroked his beard and explained with a smile, "As esteemed guests have come from afar, according to the customs of Wujin Kingdom, we must first present fine wine and delicacies to welcome you. Please do not hold back; enjoy yourselves."
It turned out that Wujin Kingdom had a strict hierarchy where different classes were represented by distinct colors. The king and royal family used gold; nobles used red; officials used blue; while commoners used black. This applied to all aspects of life.
Thus, most men seen on the streets wore blue headbands. Wealthy commoners also donned blue, while the majority of commoners wore black headbands. Consequently, their daily necessities were predominantly black as well.
Wujin Old Man further informed us that Wujin Kingdom revered black as a noble and dignified color. Therefore, black utensils were primarily used by nobles, officials, and wealthy households. Ordinary commoners mostly had to use wooden utensils.
Now I understood! I smiled at Wujin Old Man in gratitude and took my seat one by one. Wujin Old Man and his wife occupied the central seats while we sat on either side.
The Azure Flower Maidens entered in succession, placing plates of delicious food on the table. Before we could take a good look, the Wujin Old Man stood up, holding a wine jug in both hands. He filled each of our wine cups and smiled, saying, "Come, let's first drink a cup of my Wujin Kingdom's fine wine to refresh ourselves!"
We hurriedly held our cups with both hands and expressed our thanks one by one. Taking a gentle sip, I found the wine to be soft and rich at first, but with a spicy and refreshing aftertaste that was quite different from the wines of the Central Plains.
After a few cups of wine, the atmosphere became even more lively. Everyone chatted and ate, enjoying each other's company. The Wujin Old Man and his wife were cheerful and witty, speaking endlessly. They shared stories about the customs and scenery of Wujin Kingdom, as well as tales from the martial world and the various aspects of life in the marketplace—nothing was beyond their knowledge.
Their conversation gave us a deeper understanding of Wujin Kingdom. Although the Wujin Old Man and his wife were commoners, they had traveled extensively and were well-informed. Their friendly nature had also earned them many friends, making them well-connected in terms of information.
