The next day, Lu Hao continued to accompany me for driving practice, but I noticed he wasn't in good condition. He wore a hat, mask, and sunglasses, wrapping himself up tightly, and his voice was hoarse.
"What's wrong with you?" I asked with concern.
"I caught a cold," Lu Hao replied.
"A cold? When did that happen?" I was surprised.
"Last night," Lu Hao said.
"Then you shouldn't have come today," I worriedly suggested.
"It's nothing," Lu Hao waved his hand dismissively. "Just a little cold; it's not life-threatening."
"But..." I still felt uneasy.
"No buts," Lu Hao interrupted me. "I know my own body; don't worry."
I looked at him, hesitating to say more.
"Alright, stop worrying," Lu Hao said as he patted my shoulder. "Let's go."
"Okay." I nodded.
After we got in the car, Lu Hao still sat in the back seat. I fastened my seatbelt, adjusted the seat, and prepared to set off.
"Wait a minute," Lu Hao suddenly stopped me.
"What is it?" I asked, puzzled.
"Let me take a nap for a bit," Lu Hao said.
"Huh?" I was taken aback. "Did you not sleep well last night?"
"Not that," Lu Hao shook his head. "I just feel a bit carsick."
"Carsick? But you seemed fine yesterday," I remarked in surprise.
"I don't know," Lu Hao frowned. "I just feel uncomfortable."
"Then maybe you shouldn't accompany me for driving practice today," I suggested.
"No way," Lu Hao firmly refused. "I said I'd help you practice."
"But..."
"No buts," Lu Hao said impatiently. "I'll be fine after a quick nap."
"Alright then." I relented.
I started the car and drove slowly on the road. Sure enough, Lu Hao fell asleep in the back seat. I tried my best to drive smoothly so as not to wake him.
After finishing the practice, I took Lu Hao home.
"You should rest well when you get back," I told him.
"Mm." Lu Hao nodded, "You too."
"I know," I replied with a smile.
We said our goodbyes, and I watched his car drive away before turning back to my own vehicle.
As soon as I got in the car, I received a call from Liu Ming.
"You’re practicing driving by yourself today," he said.
"Oh," I responded.
"Where's your friend?" Liu Ming asked.
"He..." I thought for a moment, "He has something to do."
"Oh." Liu Ming didn't press further.
I hung up the phone and sighed.
I drove alone to Liu Ming's place, where he continued to teach me sternly.
However, I noticed that I was learning much faster today than before.
"Were you deliberately slowing down before?" Liu Ming questioned skeptically.
"No," I quickly denied it.
"Then why are you suddenly faster today?" Liu Ming asked.
"I don't know," I shook my head.
"..." Liu Ming stared at me for a while, "Forget it, just keep practicing."
"Oh." I breathed a sigh of relief.
I practiced until evening before leaving.
"Thank you, Coach Liu," I said sincerely.
"No need to thank me," Liu Ming waved his hand, "Just go home and rest well."
"Mm." I nodded, "You too."
I said goodbye to him and then left.
After returning to school, I sent a message to Lu Hao.
"Are you there?" I asked.
"Yes," he replied instantly.
"Why didn't you come to practice driving today?" I inquired.
"I'm a bit tired," Lu Hao responded.
"Oh." I felt a bit disappointed.
"What's wrong?" he asked.
"Nothing," I replied, "Just make sure to rest well."
"Mm," Lu Hao replied.
I put down my phone and sighed.
I thought for a moment and then sent a message to Liu Ming.
"Coach Liu, Lu Hao is sick today, so he didn't come to practice," I explained.
"Mm," Liu Ming replied with a single word.
"Please don't blame him," I pleaded.
"Blame him for what?" Liu Ming asked.
"Blame him for not coming to practice," I said.
"Why would I blame him?" Liu Ming countered.
"..." I was taken aback.
Yeah, why would he blame Lu Hao?
Aren't they good friends?
"Is he sick?" Liu Ming asked again.
"Yes," I nodded.
"Then let him rest well," Liu Ming said.
"Okay," I replied, "Thank you."
"No need to thank me," Liu Ming said.
I put down my phone and took a deep breath.
I felt it was necessary to remind Lu Hao that although Liu Ming seemed harsh on the surface, he actually cared about him.
So I took out my phone and sent another message to Lu Hao.
"Lu Hao, since you didn't go to practice today, Coach Liu didn't say anything, right?" I asked.
"He didn't say anything," Lu Hao replied.
"Oh," I sighed in relief, "Then you should rest well."
"Mm," Lu Hao replied.
I put down my phone and sighed again.
