My first encounter with Lu Yu was on my way home from work.
The night was thick with darkness as I stood at the street corner. The man was less than half a meter away from me, dressed in a black suit. His deep-set eyes and high nose gave him an air of intensity, while his obsidian-like eyes were filled with inscrutable emotions. The gold-rimmed glasses added an extra touch of elegance and restraint to his demeanor.
His expression was stern, but the strange glimmer in his eyes sent chills down my spine, as if he were not of this world but rather a vampire traversing through the shadows.
The evening breeze was cool against my back as I leaned against the wall, feeling frozen in place. The man slowly approached me and spoke in a low, husky voice, “Your scent is quite special.”
My heart sank, and I turned to leave. I thought Lu Yu was merely an accident in my life; no matter how strange he seemed, he was just a fleeting stranger.
But little did I know, he was like a giant net that ensnared me tightly, leaving me nowhere to escape. Lu Yu could always find me with uncanny precision, no matter where I moved.
At first, I was overwhelmed and tried to report him to the police. However, Lu Yu seemed to be prepared; he always managed to cleverly use his unique identity to evade any action from law enforcement.
Eventually, I despairingly realized that I was like a butterfly trapped in a web, unable to break free. In my moments of helplessness, my husband Ning Jing would call and coldly say, “I won’t be home tonight.”
His voice was icy and devoid of any emotion, as if there were no feelings left between us. I wanted to ask for his help, but the words caught in my throat.
Ning Jing had always despised me; why would he investigate Lu Yu for my sake? And even if I told him, would he believe me?
As night fell and the bright streetlights illuminated my face, I tucked my wind-blown hair behind my ear and continued walking forward. Suddenly, my phone in my bag vibrated.
I paused and quickly pulled it out; the number on the screen made my heart race. When I answered the call, the male voice on the other end was distant and detached.
“Is there something you need?” I asked cautiously.
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the phone, and after a long while, Ning Jing finally spoke slowly.
"It's nothing."
After he finished speaking, he hung up the phone.
I held my phone, feeling a mix of emotions.
In the three years of our marriage, I had never heard him say anything affectionate to me.
When he called, it was usually for one of two reasons: either he was working late and wouldn't be coming home, or he was away on a business trip.
At the beginning of our marriage, I still held some hope that he would treat me better.
But as time went on, I gradually understood that he would never love me.
Our marriage was merely a transaction of interests.
The Ning family needed a business alliance through marriage, and I needed money.
By marrying Ning Jing, I could acquire a substantial fortune, enough to cover my brother's tuition fees.
So, I didn't care about Ning Jing's attitude towards me.
I just hoped to live a stable life, even if he didn't love me.
I put my phone away and continued walking forward.
Just as I reached an alleyway, a dark figure suddenly blocked my path.
I was startled and instinctively looked up, meeting Lu Yu's deep black eyes.
He had one hand in his suit pants pocket, his tall figure looming over me, and his thin lips curved into a slight smile.
"You've moved again."
His tone was flat, yet it inexplicably sent chills down my spine.
I pressed my lips together, not wanting to engage with him, and tried to sidestep him to pass by.
But my arm was grabbed by him; the man's grip was strong and painful.
I struggled a few times but couldn't break free.
"Lu Yu, what exactly do you want?"
I shouted in anger, but the fear in my heart grew stronger.
Lu Yu smiled slightly and leaned close to my ear, whispering, "What do you think?"
What do I think?
I think he wants to kill me.
For the past three years, Lu Yu has been following me like a shadow, and I am almost certain he has some ulterior motive.
But my intuition tells me he means me no harm.
"Lu Yu, why are you following me like this?"
I lifted my head, my gaze landing on the man's exceptionally handsome face.
Lu Yu chuckled softly and gently released my arm.
"Song Yao, do you really not remember me at all?"
