To illustrate with a somewhat abstract example, if we compare this world to an ocean, Duanmu Xue and her companions are like fish born in the sea, while Lufan is a land creature that suddenly arrives at the ocean floor, and Heaven and Earth Vital Energy is like Oxygen dissolved in seawater.
Duanmu Xue and her companions, being born in the sea, do not need to adapt; they can survive in the ocean and absorb Heaven and Earth Vital Energy as naturally as fish breathe in water—it's instinctual and poses no problem.
However, Lufan's situation is different. As an outsider suddenly entering the seawater, he must endure the pressure of the water while facing the predicament of being unable to extract Oxygen from it.
The Heaven and Earth Vital Energy within those Primordial Food and Primordial Liquid is like individual bottles of Oxygen that can support his cultivation, but ultimately it is not a long-term solution. Therefore, he must acquire the ability to extract Oxygen from seawater.
To gain this ability, he needs something special—something akin to gills that allow fish to extract Oxygen from water—capable of separating Heaven and Earth Vital Energy from space.
As for what exactly this special thing is, Lufan has found his answer. It has many names: Willpower, Mental Energy, Spiritual Power, Soul Power, etc. It is essentially that innate consciousness humans possess, which Lufan refers to as Mind Power.
As stated in books, only Spiritual Will can sense Heaven and Earth Vital Energy.
This realization came to Lufan after he sensed how Duanmu Xue's cultivation technique operated. With his intelligence and deductive abilities, once given a correct direction, he quickly pieced together the cause-and-effect involved.
He had always been unable to extract Heaven and Earth Vital Energy from space into his body for three reasons: first, his Mind Power was too weak in the past; second, he did not correctly understand how Heaven and Earth Vital Energy exists; third, due to his identity as an outsider, there was a barrier between him and Heaven and Earth Vital Energy.

This ethereal concept could not be overcome solely by physical strength; it would require the power to break through the Void. Even if he were a hundred times stronger, it would be impossible, so in the end, he had to rely on Mind Power.
The human mind is incredibly mysterious; it can communicate with the ethereal realms, both tangible and intangible, illusionary and real. Naturally, it can also connect across dimensions.

Indeed, as Lufan unleashed his intent, he vaguely heard a soft sound as an invisible Void barrier was shattered. At the same time, he finally connected with the vast and boundless Heaven and Earth Vital Energy that permeated space!
Then, Lufan began to operate his Inner Strength Cultivation Method.
In an instant, the Vital Energy surged violently, with massive amounts of Heaven and Earth Vital Energy rushing toward him from all directions.
