In "In Distress," Xia Xiaoyu clutched at a lifeline, pulling out the only phone she had that could contact Zifeng.
She dialed the number, expecting to hear a message saying the call could not be connected, but strangely, Zifeng answered.
"I'm in trouble!"
She didn't elaborate or provide details; Xia Xiaoyu knew Zifeng would understand.
After she spoke those words, there was silence on the line, and after a moment, the call disconnected.
Even through the phone, Xia Xiaoyu could imagine Zifeng's serious expression; he was surely thinking of a way to help.
"Xia Xiaoyu, you can do this. You will be okay!"
With trembling hands, she put the phone away. In that place, this phone was her only connection to safety, and she didn't want to lose it.
Her gaze darted around the blurred surroundings as she scrutinized them carefully, feeling increasingly anxious inside.
She couldn't see anything unusual, but that sharp instinct within her warned that she was in serious trouble.
A biting cold wind blew down from above, silencing all sounds of nature; the world fell quiet, and then everything ignited in chaos.
Xia Xiaoyu stood at the top, her eyes filled with fear as she scanned her surroundings. The pitch-black night remained desolate, quietly enveloping the world.
Feeling a sense of panic as if abandoned by the world, her last thread of rationality crumbled. She began to wander blindly down toward the Staircase Entrance.
She had never felt such a strong sense of unease, as if she were being slowly torn apart.
In the night, it was quiet, and above the Staircase Entrance, intermittent footsteps echoed, as Xia Xiaoyu struggled to suppress her rhythmless fear.
She didn't know what was wrong, but she felt as if there was something in front of her that shouldn't be there.
It was an inexplicable feeling, yet it felt so real.
Tap tap tap... The empty footsteps reverberated in the silence of Midnight.
As she descended to the second floor of the Teaching Building, Xia Xiaoyu saw a familiar figure walking towards the other end of the corridor. The figure appeared dignified and composed, still dressed in professional attire.
It was her homeroom teacher, Li Hongmei!
"Teacher!"
Xia Xiaoyu called out with a trembling heart, just as she was about to step forward when she realized that there was no one in the corridor at all.
Only a long, empty corridor stretched ahead, dark and silent, but there wasn't a single person in sight.
Could it be that she was seeing things?
The more she thought about it, the stranger it felt, and her heart raced even more. She didn't linger there for long.
In the darkness, there was no moon, but strangely enough, Xia Xiaoyu could still vaguely see her surroundings. Her eyesight was excellent; although she couldn't see as clearly as during the day, she could still make out the general shapes.
On the first floor, Xia Xiaoyu saw a familiar figure—Cao Bao!
He still looked as silly as ever, even when alone, with a goofy smile on his face. He was holding a book and walking towards the office.
“Wood!”
Seeing that long-lost goofy smile, Xia Xiaoyu felt a pang of sadness. She called out, trying to get him to stop. Suddenly, she realized that Cao Bao's simple demeanor seemed to bring her a sense of comfort.
Although she didn't want to admit it, Cao Bao had quietly chipped away at her defenses over the past three years; his presence had entered her world.
However, no matter how much Xia Xiaoyu shouted, it was as if Cao Bao couldn't hear her, as he continued on his way to the Office Building.
“Wood!”
Xia Xiaoyu called out again and ran desperately to catch him, but after just two steps, she stopped in her tracks.
Cao Bao had vanished...
Xia Xiaoyu stared blankly into the dimness ahead, where she had clearly seen Cao Bao walking just moments ago. Yet, just as she was about to catch up with him, he had disappeared.
What was happening?
