Was it just her eyes playing tricks on her? It couldn't be; Xia Xiaoyu clearly remembered everything so distinctly. It was impossible for it to be an illusion.
There was no sound, just silence—pure silence…
Rustling…
Then, from within the Small Grove, a black figure slowly emerged.
In the dim light, Xia Xiaoyu watched as the black figure drew closer and closer.
Zifeng looked somewhat tired, yet he still appeared relaxed, showing no signs of anything being amiss.
"What are you doing here?"
Xia Xiaoyu paused for a moment before voicing her question.
"Huh?" Zifeng was taken aback for a second, then casually replied, "What's wrong? Why can't I be here?"
"Are you even human?"
Xia Xiaoyu subtly shifted her weight back; this guy was changing too quickly, and that wasn't a speed typical of an ordinary person.
"Heh heh..." Zifeng merely chuckled and didn't answer the question. Instead, he said to Xia Xiaoyu, "You should head back; nothing should happen tonight."
"When did you arrive?"
Xia Xiaoyu didn't move her feet or say anything else; she simply looked at Zifeng and gently asked.
"Seven o'clock. I've been waiting right here, but it’s definitely more troublesome than I expected!"
"What does it mean?"
"You wouldn't understand even if I told you!"
Xia Xiaoyu's expression changed, and she asked again, "So if you explain it, I'll understand?"
Zifeng frowned slightly and looked at Xia Xiaoyu with a meaningful gaze. "Do you really want to know?"
"Of course!" Xia Xiaoyu replied without hesitation.
"You've run into a huge problem, that's all," Zifeng said simply.
"What problem? What’s going on with the Shadow that started opposing you?" Xia Xiaoyu thought for a moment before asking.
"You can see me fighting a Shadow?" A hint of surprise flashed in Zifeng's eyes, but she quickly realized.
She had encountered many strange things and had seen odd occurrences multiple times, so there was nothing unusual about what her eyes had witnessed.
"Yeah, wow, I didn't expect you to be this cool!"
"…"
Zifeng remained silent, simply looking into Xia Xiaoyu's eyes.
"Hey, stop trying to be cool. Can you tell me what the little shadow that started opposing you is?"
Xia Xiaoyu continued to ask curiously.
"It's a Ghost Infant!"
Zifeng said calmly.
"What is a Ghost Infant?" Xia Xiaoyu felt a jolt in her heart.
"It can also be referred to as a Wraith Infant. They are all babies that died in the womb, likely just before they were about to be born," Zifeng explained briefly.
"What do you mean? A fetus, dead? Can you explain it more clearly..." Xia Xiaoyu felt increasingly confused by Zifeng's words.
"Simply put, it means that a woman died during her pregnancy, and it was around the time when the fetus was close to being born," Zifeng said, his brow furrowing tighter.
"But if they haven't been born yet, how could a dead fetus become what you call a Ghost Infant?" Xia Xiaoyu hurriedly explained, somewhat skeptical of Zifeng's words.
"First, the pregnant woman died under unjust circumstances. The resentment she generated after death is very strong... Second, there are Western practitioners who deliberately deal with these matters..." Zifeng knew that Xia Xiaoyu would have more questions, but he couldn't explain everything at once. He continued, "Regardless of the reason, it indicates that the deceased woman harbored a lot of resentment. This strong resentment would also affect the fetus in her womb. The fetus would be even more susceptible to this resentment because it cannot dissipate in the womb. Therefore, almost every moment, the fetus is being eroded by this resentment, first turning into a Wraith Infant, and then becoming a Ghost Infant..." Zifeng explained clearly, though he felt that the situation was quite troublesome.
A Ghost Infant should fall within the purview of an Exorcist, and vengeful spirits are dealt with by Spirit Hunters. Only they possess the means to counteract them.
"But if the fetus died in the womb, how could it possibly come out..." Xia Xiaoyu, though feeling somewhat creeped out, stubbornly retorted.
"Because the resentment infected the fetus, resulting in it becoming a Ghost Infant. But if you're asking me why they would come out of a woman's body, it's because a Ghost Infant is alive..." Zifeng leaned closer to Xia Xiaoyu, speaking in a heavy voice.
"Because the Ghost Infant crawled out of the woman's belly on its own..."
