Xia Xiaoyu's relaxed mind felt as if it had been struck hard by a hammer.
While experiencing the pain, she understood that this matter was far from over, and this was merely the beginning. A series of bizarre and terrifying events awaited her.
Could she escape?
Xia Xiaoyu felt a bit numb, as if the blood in her body had been imprisoned, forgetting to circulate, leaving her feeling cold to the bone.
In her mind, only one question echoed repeatedly:
How did they die?
Yes, it was too coincidental, and it made Xia Xiaoyu realize that this could not simply be explained away as coincidence!
There must be something more.
Xia Xiaoyu tried not to think about these things for now because the entire empty room felt cold even in the daytime. After sitting on the bed for a long time, she finally calmed her racing heart.
She glanced at the time; it was almost ten o'clock. Without thinking too much, Xia Xiaoyu got up to wash up. After having lunch, she sat quietly watching television while waiting for Cao Youfeng.
Cao Youfeng had been Xia Xiaoyu's playmate since childhood. Back then, their homes were not far apart; they were practically neighbors.
They attended elementary school together, and although they didn't go to the same middle school, high school, or even university, their parents had watched them grow up together and were very fond of both of them.
Cao Youfeng was taller than Xia Xiaoyu, with long legs and a tall figure; she was also a stunning beauty.
Feeling a bit bored at home and fueled by curiosity and various doubts, Xia Xiaoyu became somewhat impatient. She was an impulsive girl who wanted to know the answers to everything as quickly as possible.
She hardly paid attention to what was being reported on television.
Around three o'clock in the afternoon, there was finally a knock at the door.
Knock, knock, knock.
"Xia Xiaoyu, are you there?"
A voice with a sharp accent came from outside the door.
"…"
Eagerly waiting, Xia Xiaoyu tossed the remote control aside and ran barefoot to the door.
"What’s wrong? You sounded urgent on the phone. Tell me, did something happen?" As soon as the door opened, Cao Youfeng spoke before even stepping inside.
"Um, no, it's not that. Sanfeng, come in and talk…"
Xia Xiaoyu pulled Cao Youfeng into the room and sat her down on the sofa.
"What are you doing? Why do you look so mysterious?" Cao Youfeng asked with a puzzled expression, staring at Xia Xiaoyu's face which seemed to hold some secret.
"I need your help," Xia Xiaoyu said as she held Cao Youfeng's hand and sat her down on the sofa.
"Heh heh, Xia Xiaoyu, just tell me honestly, are you secretly in love? Afraid your mom will find out and want me to help you think of a way? Oh my, what age is this? Tell me about that guy! Is he handsome?"
"Sanfeng, what are you talking about!" Xia Xiaoyu replied seriously. "I really have something important!"
"Really?"
"More real than pearls!"
Cao Youfeng stopped smiling and looked at Xia Xiaoyu. "Okay then, tell me what it is that you need my help with!"
"It's about Lan Ling. Can you tell me how she died?" Xia Xiaoyu fixed her gaze on Cao Youfeng and said.
“Xia Xiaoyu, you are really strange!” Cao Youfeng said, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. She leaned closer to Xia Xiaoyu's ear and whispered, “You don’t have a necrophilia fetish, do you?”
“I... damn!”
Xia Xiaoyu couldn’t hold back a curse and blurted it out. Then she looked helplessly at Cao Youfeng and said, “I really admire your imagination. I’m not joking with you; I really need your help right now.”
“Xia Xiaoyu, first tell me why you want to know the cause of Lan Ling's death? What exactly is going on?” Cao Youfeng looked at Xia Xiaoyu with a puzzled expression.
“Fine, fine. But San Feng, you must promise me that you won’t tell anyone about this!” Xia Xiaoyu knew that if she didn’t say anything, San Feng probably wouldn’t either. She realized she needed to understand the whole situation.
“Xia Xiaoyu, do you still not trust me? When have I ever betrayed you? Hurry up and tell me!” Cao Youfeng urged.
Xia Xiaoyu rolled her eyes at her. She remembered back in sixth grade when she had a crush on a boy and only told Cao Youfeng. As a result, Cao Youfeng let it slip for a lollipop, so she knew better!
“A classmate of mine suddenly died last week, and I saw her one last time. Her face was terrifyingly pale, her eye sockets were dark, and her eyes were sunken in. Plus, she looked incredibly thin!”
Cao Youfeng gasped in shock and looked at Xia Xiaoyu in disbelief. “Xia Xiaoyu, you’re not joking with me, are you? This sounds exactly like what happened with our University’s Lan Ling!”
“That’s exactly why I came to find you! And it’s not just that. My classmate also died on Wednesday... last Wednesday.”
“Don’t scare me like this; it sounds a bit eerie!” Cao Youfeng said, her face filled with surprise as she looked at Xia Xiaoyu in disbelief.
