Xia Xiaoyu's footsteps passed by the seemingly illusory rock fountain, which was dry because water is fluid.
She and Xu Qian went in different directions to search for Lin Xi. The park was circular and not very large; one went left and the other right, and they would soon meet again.
"Woo woo woo—"
Just as Xia Xiaoyu lifted her foot to move, a series of faint, intermittent cries sent a chill down her spine.
The surroundings were pitch black, and the range of her vision was limited. The cries seemed to come from all directions, making it impossible to determine their source.
The eerie silence around her made Xia Xiaoyu feel tense, creating a sense of visual and auditory confusion.
The cries were somewhat indistinct, but Xia Xiaoyu was certain that they likely belonged to Lin Xi.
Without much hesitation, she decided to carefully follow the sound after staying put for a while.
As the saying goes, caution makes for a long-lasting journey; this place was just as strange as what she encountered at Bell Tower.
More importantly, was there something wrong here?
Finally, Xia Xiaoyu spotted a vague figure squatting under a tree next to a park bench. The sobbing continued to emanate from it.
Heavens, it was hard to believe that a person could produce such an eerie, drawn-out cry; this was not a common occurrence.
Xia Xiaoyu immediately realized something but was certain that the voice carried a slight accent—it was definitely Lin Xi.
What had she encountered?
Looking toward the sound, she saw Lin Xi but nothing else around her.
"Xiao Xi!"
Xia Xiaoyu ran over but did not get too close; this place felt incredibly strange, and who knew what she might find if she approached?
Now about seven or eight meters away from Lin Xi, Xia Xiaoyu tentatively called out.
Suddenly, the crying stopped, and the figure of Lin Xi in front did not make a sound, nor did she turn around.
"Xiao Xi, is that you?"
Startled by the figure squatting in front, Xia Xiaoyu felt her heart race at the expression and the lack of movement from Lin Xi.
Similarly, Lin Xi in front remained motionless.
"Can you say something? What’s wrong?"
Xia Xiaoyu couldn't help but speak anxiously.
However, Lin Xi only ceased her crying and still did not speak.
"I am Xia Xiaoyu; please turn around and look at me!"
Xia Xiaoyu suddenly felt that something was off with Lin Xi in front. Why wouldn’t she turn to look at her?
Lin Xi still did not turn around; instead, her figure appeared to tremble slightly, making the surroundings feel even more eerie. Xia Xiaoyu secretly broke into a cold sweat.
She dared not stay any longer; Lin Xi's behavior was indeed strange, especially in this unsettling and spine-chilling place. Xia Xiaoyu felt that things were becoming serious.
Her footsteps involuntarily retreated; all she wanted to do was leave this place.
"Xia Xiaoyu, is it really you?"
Finally, just as Xia Xiaoyu turned to run away, Lin Xi, squatting under the tree, gently asked.
Yet, she still did not turn her head. The tremor in her voice revealed her fear.
"Xiao Xi, what’s wrong? I am Xia Xiaoyu!"
Xia Xiaoyu paused, confirming that the voice belonged to Lin Xi before she couldn't help but respond.
"Xia Xiaoyu, I’m so scared."
In an instant, Lin Xi began to cry again. It seemed there was endless grievance, but she still did not turn around.
"What's wrong? Why won't you turn around?" Xia Xiaoyu guessed that Lin Xi must have encountered something terrifying.
"No, I can't," Lin Xi's figure trembled uncontrollably.
"What happened? Please look back at me! It's me, Xia Xiaoyu!" Xia Xiaoyu couldn't help but feel anxious.
"I can't, I really can't!"
Lin Xi spoke with a voice filled with tears.
"It's okay, I'm here for you. Did you encounter something strange?"
Xia Xiaoyu forced herself to calm down and comforted her.
"Um, Xia Xiaoyu, if I tell you, please don't be scared!"
After a long silence, Lin Xi slowly said.
"What exactly happened? Just tell me!"
"I... I heard it. I heard a woman's voice. She kept whispering in my ear... 'Don't look back... whatever you do, don't look back!'" Lin Xi paused for a moment and added, "I'm scared. I can't turn around. I really can't!"
