It was just a wall separated by wooden boards, and no matter how hard she beat against it, it was futile.
Then Xia Xiaoyu saw a shadow of a doll at the top of the stairs, and she knew that the talking doll had come after her.
At that moment, suddenly, a faint glimmer of light emerged from a room in the middle of the third floor.
In the darkness, it flickered, yet it gave Xia Xiaoyu a sliver of courage as she teetered on the edge of madness.
Was there really no other way out?
When she saw the doll fully appear at the top of the stairs, Xia Xiaoyu frantically rushed toward the room that held the last bit of light...
Bang...
With great force, when Xia Xiaoyu suddenly pushed open the door, it made a loud noise. Before she could even take in what was inside, she instinctively closed the door behind her, leaning against it and gasping for breath...
"Little girl, why are you in such a hurry?" Just as Xia Xiaoyu managed to catch her breath, an elderly figure suddenly emerged from within the room.
Almost instantly, Xia Xiaoyu nearly cried out, but her gaze fell upon a corner at the back of the room where an elderly man, around sixty or seventy years old, sat on a low stool holding an Ancient Bell!
On the table beside him was only a Kerosene Lamp casting a faint glow.
Because she had entered in such a rush and the angle at which the old man was sitting was quite inconspicuous, combined with the dim lighting, even with her usually sharp eyesight, Xia Xiaoyu had not noticed that there was another person inside.
"Sorry to disturb you, I'm lost," Xia Xiaoyu said apologetically to the old man, her pale face showing her fear.
"Um..."
The old man replied softly, then slowly raised his head to look at Xia Xiaoyu.
His hair was silver, and his face was covered in wrinkles due to his age, which glimmered oddly under the light of the Kerosene Lamp.
"Sir, I don't know where the stairs are. Can you tell me how to get out?"
Xia Xiaoyu wanted to leave this place as soon as possible.
"Lost? The stairs are gone! You can't go downstairs tonight!"
The old man's kind face bore a gentle smile.
"But..."
Xia Xiaoyu wanted to say something more, but the old man interrupted her.
"The Immortals are at the wall; tonight, you cannot go out..."
The old man dared not say that Xia Xiaoyu had encountered a ghostly barrier and could only refer to it as the Immortals.
Xia Xiaoyu was confused and clearly did not understand the meaning behind the old man's words.
"Stay here tonight, don't go anywhere. Just wait until dawn..." the old man continued to smile.
"Old man, why are you holding the Stone Bell?"
Seeing that the old man was holding an Ancient Bell, Xia Xiaoyu asked in a daze, not understanding.
"Hehe!" Upon hearing Xia Xiaoyu's question, a kind smile appeared on the old man's face. "You know, it's not easy to find a job these days. At my age, I can't do much anymore. The only skill I have is repairing clocks, so this is what I do!"
Hearing this, doubts arose in Xia Xiaoyu's mind. Who still used an Ancient Bell in this day and age?
"When people get old, they become useless. If it were in the past, I could earn some money with this every day. It would help with basic needs, and since people often get lost around here, I could also offer them a place to stay."
As the old man fiddled with the bell, he muttered to himself.
"People often get lost?!"
Xia Xiaoyu was taken aback and felt a sense of shock upon hearing the old man's words.
