After giving the ferret coat to Yu Feiyao, Ming Juan was left with only a white sweatshirt and gray shorts. She looked down at the two suitcases being pulled by Miao Chengmin, her hands awkwardly twisting together, making it seem at first glance that Ming Juan was being escorted by Miao Chengmin like a prisoner.
"Hey, that girl is really pretty..." Two boys who had just come out of the library quietly pointed at Ming Juan's long white legs. Ming Juan couldn't hear what they were saying, but she knew many people around were looking at her. Feeling shy and somewhat flustered, Ming Juan was forced to take small steps to keep up with Miao Chengmin, using his tall figure to block the gazes coming from the library square.
"Eh?" Miao Chengmin looked down at Ming Juan's turned-away profile. "Is something wrong?"
Ming Juan's action indeed seemed like she wanted to start a conversation in the eyes of an ordinary person. She suddenly entered stuttering mode: "I... I just... um..."
Miao Chengmin tilted his head in confusion.
"How do I explain this to him?" Ming Juan frantically twirled a strand of her curly hair, feeling increasingly helpless. "Forget it, I'll just embarrass myself."
"Senior, um... how should I address you?" Ming Juan timidly pushed her hair aside, revealing her watery eyes. Her gaze inadvertently seemed glued to Miao Chengmin's bicep. Ming Juan blinked hard a few times before lowering her head again.
Just that one glance made Miao Chengmin feel as if he had been struck by lightning; his heart felt like it short-circuited from a surge of electricity. His eyes immediately froze, fixated on Ming Juan's slightly flushed cheeks, longing for a chance to meet her water-like pupils.
"Um..." Ming Juan bit her lip and deliberately turned her head towards the university gate, her shy demeanor making Miao Chengmin feel a sense of affection for her.
"Call me Miao Chengmin."
Upon hearing him introduce himself, Ming Juan realized it would be impolite not to turn back. Perhaps too nervous, she first looked towards the gate and said "Mm," then mustered the courage to turn her head to look at Miao Chengmin.
In that moment of eye contact, they saw a love story that would last seven years, a vast sea of flowers in the desert, the sun and moon in the skyline, and countless lovers' hearts enduring through time.
The story of Miao Chengmin and Ming Juan began with this accidental encounter. That year, Ming Juan entered the national key university People's University of U City with the highest score in the city's liberal arts exams. Although her family hoped she would study abroad, due to Ming Juan's strong opposition—she even threatened to take drastic measures—her father ultimately compromised with her choice.
"I hope your esteemed school can be understanding and accommodating towards my daughter. It is our honor as the Ming Family for Miss Ming to study here for the next four years."
Her father specifically spoke with the principal, conveying a simple message: Ming Juan needed special care; if anything went wrong, they couldn't bear the consequences—so please be cautious.
Despite their family's efforts to make Ming Juan understand that she was the only daughter of one of the eight richest families in the country, she always appeared timid around outsiders and refused any special treatment.
For instance, when her father wanted to rent an apartment at People's University of U City for her use during her four years there, upon learning about it, Ming Juan caused an uproar at home.
Why was this? It was simple: Ming Juan felt insecure about her Soul-Gazing Eye on her forehead and was aware of her family's history of corruption and exploitation dating back to the Northern Expedition period. Additionally, having friends from ordinary working-class backgrounds like Yu Feiyao made her respect and pity for common people far greater than any wealthy heir worth billions.
And Miao Chengmin was just that—a child from an ordinary background in Ming Juan's eyes; he might even be considered below average. He spent his childhood in a dim alley and had only average academic performance in school.
He drifted through life until middle school when he joined the basketball team due to his outstanding physical condition and was selected for the training team, marking the beginning of his daily routine of running on the playground year after year.
Miao Chengmin's most prominent talent is running. Whether it's long-distance or short-distance, during sports events or daily training, Miao Chengmin can always be found at the front of the running team, sprinting with all his might.
For Miao Chengmin, his youth feels like a voiceless journey: he is exhausted but has no room to retreat; he is full of aspirations but often feels powerless.
"Chengmin, don't be nervous about the physical exam! With your overall performance, getting into City S's sports university is definitely not a problem!" On the bus heading to the exam site, the coach specifically came over to provide Miao Chengmin with psychological support.
However, everyone was taken aback—Miao Chengmin made a mistake and missed out on City S's sports university by a score of nine points.
In despair, he casually filled in People's University of U City on his application form. Perhaps it was fate; none of the first two choices he settled for were accepted, leading him to the resource-scarce sports program at People's University of U City.
Due to his family's financial situation, Miao Chengmin has been working part-time since his freshman year and has managed to earn a scholarship occasionally, sending all the money back home.
Half a month ago during the summer break, a provincial university sports competition was held. Miao Chengmin led his school's athletes as the captain of the track and field team and secured fourth place, just behind three long-dominating sports universities in the province. Although it wasn't among the top three, it was still a rare achievement for People's University of U City. The school recorded credits for participating athletes and awarded bonuses.
"That's great." Miao Chengmin stared at his personal information on the computer. "Next week there’s a call for volunteers to welcome new students. If I participate, I should be able to earn some credits. With the credits from the competition, this semester has just started; if I work hard, I can definitely secure a first-class scholarship! If I can send that eight thousand back home, my sister's dowry won't be a worry next month!"
"So... that's why you're volunteering?" Ming Juan walked alongside Miao Chengmin. They walked slowly, even Time seemed anxious beneath their feet.
Miao Chengmin nodded. "Pretty much... By the way, may I ask how to address you?"
"Huh?" Ming Juan shook her head, brushed her hair away from her face, and tiptoed closer to Miao Chengmin's ear to whisper, "Ming Juan."
"Ah?!" Miao Chengmin instantly recalled what Li Tao had said about that amazing beauty and tilted his head to examine Ming Juan. "You are... the only daughter of the Ming family?"
Ming Juan's expression dimmed slightly at Miao Chengmin's words. "I wish you could drop the 'only daughter' part."
"Oh... I'm sorry." Miao Chengmin quickly shifted his gaze away. He felt unworthy to look at this girl’s figure, but even in her already small white outfit, her subtly visible waist made his heart race.
"By the way, senior, you must be studying sports," Ming Juan asked.
"Yes." Miao Chengmin smiled. "This university is quite good; don’t be so shy—explore more."
"Okay." Ming Juan looked ahead at the crowded path. "Thank you, senior."
The cafeteria was nearby, and as it approached five o'clock, students were mostly heading toward it.
Watching the electric bikes and crowds intersecting under the shade of trees, Miao Chengmin wanted to introduce Ming Juan to more about the university's population when four people approached him suddenly, causing him to immediately withdraw his smile and step closer to Ming Juan's arm.
Ming Juan did not feel repulsed by Miao Chengmin's sudden closeness; she allowed him to lean against her because facing these four individuals gave her an inexplicable sense of security.
The leader had slicked-back hair that was clearly styled with an unknown amount of hair gel. The brownish-yellow watch on his wrist sparkled in the sunlight as he walked with a swagger that made his shoulders bounce up and down.
As a wealthy young lady, Ming Juan could tell at a glance that this person's watch was definitely not ordinary.
"The Van Cleef & Arpels Leo watch looks like it’s embedded with manganese aluminum garnet; it must cost at least ten million," Ming Juan thought as she focused on his watch. "But this watch is for women; he’s probably just another rich guy who knows nothing."
"Hey there, miss! Do you like my watch?"
"Oh no!" Ming Juan jolted; she realized that her earlier gaze had caught this guy's attention.
The three tall boys behind him immediately stood in a row, looking up at Miao Chengmin and Ming Juan.
"I'm sorry, she's a new student and needs to go to the dormitory to drop off her luggage. There are still many procedures to complete, so please..."
Before Miao Chengmin could finish, the man immediately took off his glasses, ignoring Miao Chengmin entirely. He stepped in front of Ming Juan, bending down to stare at her and exclaimed, "Oh! Oh! Aren't you the young lady of the Ming Family? What brings such a noble beauty to this rundown place?"
"Young Master Wang!" Ming Juan suddenly remembered, "Isn't this guy the one who said he had connections to get to New Zealand? How come..."
As he spoke, the boy waved his hand dramatically. "Hey, brothers, help her with her luggage!"
With a loud slap, his hand landed on Ming Juan's shoulder, startling her so much that she gasped as if she had been electrocuted.
"Don't worry! With me from the Wang Family backing you up, even if you were to tear this shabby school apart, no one would dare lay a finger on you!" Wang Ruihu grinned widely, his hand sliding down Ming Juan's arm.
Furious and annoyed, Ming Juan could only inch closer to Miao Chengmin. Seeing Wang Ruihu's inappropriate intentions, Miao Chengmin immediately frowned and grabbed his hand that rested on Ming Juan's arm, throwing it off.
"Young Master Wang," Miao Chengmin said firmly, "please step aside. Miss Ming is here for her registration; do not disturb her emotions."
At the same time, Miao Chengmin deliberately pulled her suitcase back slightly, preventing Wang Ruihu's lackey from taking it away.
"Hiss—" Wang Ruihu winced as Miao Chengmin squeezed his hand painfully. He turned to face Miao Chengmin and growled, "Who do you think you are? Just some chicken that ran out of a farm?"
Miao Chengmin's brows furrowed tightly as he reached out to separate Ming Juan from Wang Ruihu. Ming Juan quietly moved behind Miao Chengmin, anxiously glancing at the crowd of onlookers.
"Do you know who I am?" Wang Ruihu sneered. "I am the sole heir of the Wang Family International Corporation, one of the eight wealthy families! The daughter of the Ming Family is someone like you can entertain? Tell me your campus card number; I'll transfer you a few thousand. If you're smart, just get lost! The young lady of the Ming Family must be escorted by me!"
"Hmph." Miao Chengmin smirked disdainfully and glared at him. "You think a few thousand can buy me off? Dream on!"
"You!" Wang Ruihu was about to make a move but hesitated due to the large crowd watching. Acting rashly would ruin his family's reputation. He scowled at Miao Chengmin and asked, "Then how much do you want?"
"Someone like you... a spendthrift only knows how to throw money around." Miao Chengmin clenched his fist around the suitcase handle until it creaked audibly. Unafraid, he continued speaking and gestured for Ming Juan to hold onto her suitcase while pointing at the three lackeys surrounding them:
"Have some guts? Use your fists!"
"Don't!" Ming Juan trembled at his words and tugged hard at Miao Chengmin's arm. "The bodyguards from the Wang Family are notoriously strong; you'll get hurt!"
"Hah, fine!" Wang Ruihu pointed at Miao Chengmin's nose in front of the crowd. "Did everyone hear that? It was this guy who suggested it!"
Then leaning closer to Miao Chengmin's ear, he whispered menacingly, "Still trying to show off? Let me tell you; this woman, Ming Juan, can only belong to me, Wang Ruihu."
As soon as Wang Ruihu stepped away, his three lackeys raised their fists simultaneously and aimed them at Miao Chengmin...
"Stop!"
A commanding voice boomed from behind the crowd, causing students to panic and part ways.
An older teacher with graying hair walked onto the sidewalk with his hands clasped behind his back. His face was stern but still exuded an air of authority and dignity.
"Ah!" Miao Chengmin's expression changed dramatically. "Coach Jiang!"
