The day I received the signed divorce agreement from Jiang Yehan, I realized I wasn't as strong as I had imagined. Alone in my room, I stayed there until midnight.
I called Jiang Yehan countless times, but all the lines were busy. Eventually, I gave up and signed as Ye Zixuan. I looked around the room; from that moment on, it had nothing to do with me anymore.
The next day, I bought a ticket to Los Angeles. I returned to the house where I had once lived. The landlady saw me and was overwhelmed with tears; she gave me a big hug that made me feel a warmth I hadn't felt in a long time.
My relationship with Jiang Yehan had always been a transaction, and now that the transaction was over, it was time to wake up from the dream. Back in my own world, I turned off my phone and desperately found things to do, redecorating and cleaning my little space until it felt brand new.
Three days later, when I turned my phone back on, the screen was filled with messages. The most came from mother Zhang, but Chen Mengqi sent even more.
I called Chen Mengqi back. The voice call connected immediately.
"Ye Zixuan, you're such a bad friend! You left without even telling me!" Chen Mengqi's voice nearly shattered my eardrum.
"Weren't there special circumstances?"
"Why did you suddenly run away?" There was a mix of anger and concern in Chen Mengqi's voice.
I rubbed my forehead, "It was an emergency; I had no choice."
"That's nonsense!"
"Do you know how hard I've been covering for you here?"
"I'm sorry..."
"Ye Zixuan, you jerk!"
"Ye Zixuan, just you wait!"
Chen Mengqi suddenly hung up the phone.
I was stunned for a moment, then realized it was over!
Chen Mengqi was unreliable.
Jiang Yehan would soon come looking for me.
This time, I wouldn't run away.
I had to face everything bravely and clarify things with him in person.
Ten hours later, Jiang Yehan appeared at my doorstep.
I leaned against the sofa and, upon seeing Jiang Yehan, forced a relaxed smile. "Hi, long time no see."
Jiang Yehan's expression was terrifyingly dark; it felt like he could devour me in the next second, yet he also seemed to have relaxed a bit.
I cautiously walked over and patted his shoulder. "Are you... okay?"
Jiang Yehan remained silent and still, just staring at me.
I sighed. "I know you're really angry, but you can't just stare at me like that."
"I'm tired; let me hold you properly," Jiang Yehan finally spoke up.
"Huh?"
Jiang Yehan held onto me tightly, not letting me leave. "We'll talk about everything after I wake up."
I blinked in understanding.
Jiang Yehan lay on the sofa with his head resting on my lap and closed his eyes.
Resigned, I sat on the sofa, watching him and listening to his breathing.
Jiang Yehan must be really tired, looking exhausted with unshaven stubble and appearing worn out.
Before I knew it, I had fallen asleep too.
In the middle of the night, I woke up.
Jiang Yehan was still sleeping soundly.
I struggled to move him back onto the sofa. Leaning against the sofa, I lifted my legs and took a deep breath. I felt a bit hungry. I decided to fry an egg for myself. Just as I stood up, my waist was suddenly embraced.
Jiang Yehan's voice was muffled, "Are you really going to leave me?"
"Ye Zixuan, you've made me suffer so much; I haven't even settled the score with you yet!" I pried his hands away. "How can you blame me? You signed the divorce agreement first, which is why I was going to leave you. It made me so sad!"
Jiang Yehan suddenly looked up, his eyes clear. "I absolutely did not sign any divorce agreement. I love you; how could I let you go?"
I paused at his words. "But aren't we in a marriage of convenience? I thought when the time came, you wouldn't want me anymore." As I spoke, I started to cry in grievance.
Jiang Yehan panicked, "Don't cry! I love you; this is not a marriage of convenience at all. You are my wife, my only wife."
I looked up at him and smiled through my tears. "But what about that signature?"
He stared into my eyes, furious. "It must have been my mom's doing!"
