I turned around and saw Xiao Xiao running over with an excited expression on her face.
Curiously, I asked, "What idea do you have?"
Xiao Xiao said, "Brother, you can start a fire with stones!"
I was taken aback for a moment after hearing this, then I laughed and said, "You little rascal, you're quite clever! How did I not think of that?"
Xiao Xiao encouraged me, "Come on, give it a try."
I nodded and found two sharp stones. I placed some dry grass and leaves on the stones and then rubbed them together vigorously.
Soon, sparks flew from the stones, igniting the dry grass and leaves!
I jumped up in excitement and hugged Xiao Xiao tightly, giving her a big kiss. I said, "Xiao Xiao, you’re amazing! You saved my life!"
Xiao Xiao blushed a bit from my kiss and smiled shyly, saying, "Brother, it's what I should do."
From that day on, I no longer ate raw meat; I started eating roasted meat.
Although the meat was still somewhat hard to swallow, it was much better than eating it raw.
My life finally improved a bit, which made me very happy.
One day, while I was roasting meat at the entrance of the cave, I suddenly saw Xiao Xiao rushing over in a panic.
Gasping for breath, she said, "Brother A-Meng, you guys need to come quickly! Something's happened!"
A-Meng and I quickly stood up and followed Xiao Xiao to the open space in the center of the village.
There was a crowd gathered around the clearing, and it seemed like someone was lying in the middle of it.
We squeezed into the crowd and discovered a man lying on the ground; he was covered in blood and barely conscious.
A-Meng exclaimed in shock, "Dad! What happened to you?"
It turned out that the man was A-Meng's father.
When A-Meng's mother saw us, she cried out, "Your father... your father has been attacked by a beast..."
Upon hearing this, A-Meng broke down in tears and said, "How could this happen... How could Dad be attacked by a beast?"
Xiao Xiao and I felt heartbroken as well; we didn't know how to comfort A-Meng.
A-Meng's father was taken to the hospital. After emergency treatment by the doctors, he was temporarily out of danger but remained in a coma.
A-Meng's mother stayed in the hospital to take care of him, while Xiao Xiao and I remained in the village, continuing our dull lives.
The hot summer arrived. In the Stone Oven Kingdom, the midsummer sun blazed down, making even the mountain areas devoid of life feel like a steamer, scorching the entire land.
I took Da Huang for a walk in the mountains, feeling the heat and dryness of the northern summer. The dew on the plants had just formed but evaporated completely, and large cracks appeared on the ground, signaling the drought in this area.
As I wandered around with Da Huang, I unknowingly found myself at the entrance of Bald Xiao Xiao's house. I thought to myself that since I had nothing else to do, I might as well visit Xiao Xiao's home and see if I could help with anything.
Just as I reached Xiao Xiao's doorstep, he excitedly ran out to open the door for me. "Big Brother, I was just about to look for you!" he said.
I smiled and replied, "Oh really? That's perfect; it saves me a trip."
I glanced at the entrance of Xiao Xiao's home and realized it could be described as bare and empty. The broken entrance of the cave was simply covered with a wooden fence made from sticks to defend against intruders.
I couldn't help but sigh inwardly; I never expected Xiao Xiao's family to be in such a dire situation—it was truly surprising.
